Trend: The Top Knot
Last fall, it was all about the bun’s resurgence, this season it’s all about the top knot. “It’s a younger, modern version of a chignon and much easier to duplicate,” says Gilda, celebrity stylist at the Pierre Michel Salon in NYC. Granted, some version of the top knot is present every season, but this fall, it’s really come out as the must-wear style. I see at least a half a dozen fashionista’s a night wearing this trend. Last night at Indochine (how delicious is that tofu dish?!), there were 3 girls – just in the front of the restaurant – with the top knot!
The trick: it’s all about showing off the actual knot. The more relaxed the knot, the chicer it is.
The top knot is fun and contemporary and takes NO time to achieve. It’s also great for showing off a pretty face of makeup or getting hair off of your neck (to blind everyone with your ear and neck bling, perhaps?). And it looks so damn cool!
You can wear it in the middle of your head, a bit to the side, slicked back, a little messy, as long as there is a knot! The finer details are up to you. P.S. For the vertically challenged lady, this style will actual make you (appear) taller (because the know adds some major height)! Who couldn’t use a few inches in the right direction?
Celebs like Erin Wasson, Jessica Hart, and Mandy Moore have all been spotted with the knot. Jessica Hart really wears it well. She’s always out and about in NYC with her hair all knotted up, which was actually my inspiration for this post….
Gilda explains how you can easily get this look:
1 – Take 2 hands and make a high ponytail. The height is key. Do NOT secure with a rubber band or you’ll have trouble creating the knot.
2 – Twist it around your finger to make it look like a rope.
3 – Twist the “roped” hair clockwise like you are twisting to make a bun.
4 – Tuck the bottom in and pull it through the middle of the bun for the knotted look.
5 – Let pieces fall as desired or slick back falling front hairs with a pomaide or hairspray.
TIP: For a night out of dancing, secure with a few sporadic bobby pins.
Will you be wearing the knot?
