Trend: Rainy Day Hair for Hurricane Sandy

I wanted to post on fall scents, but it seemed frivolous with Hurricane Sandy on the horizon (autumn olfactory needs to come). So, instead, I’m rehashing a bit I wrote for Lifestyle Mirror last spring on 3 hair styles that actually work with wet and windy weather woes (ala hurricane conditions). Not that you’ll be needing a cute ‘do as the Tristate area readies for lockdown, but just in case you choose venture outdoors, work it out with one of these looks, courtesy of celebrity hair stylist Jen Atkin (the woman behind Sofia Vergara’s amazing mane).

Undone/ Messy: I find this look is best with a middle part and little volume. You want your hair to look effortless, as if it’s been blown out and slept on for a day, which is perfect for [these] weather conditions. An undone look is easy to accomplish with any length of hair or texture. Try putting your hair into a loose braid, spray Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray over it and blow dry the braid. Undo once dry and you’ll have tousled waves. Sometimes this style can tend to get a bit a frizzy. A trick to fight the frizz is to blow dry the top of your dry hair with a boar bristled brush and cool air from the blow dryer. This will help against humidity.

Updo: It’s best to play with ponytails and buns for a rain safe look. Try using different mousses and texture sprays to create a good foundation. My favorites are: Leonor Greyl Volumizing Mousse and Oribe Wave and Texture Spray. An easy bun to recreate at home is: Pull hair into a low pony, wrap the hair clockwise around the base of the ponytail and secure the bun with large french hair pins. Get a shiny or jeweled headband to dress it up! Just remember that no rules apply with this look. The messier the better.

Braid: If your feeling overwhelmed with the messy undone look, a braid is the perfect way to pull it all together. Whether a fishtail or french braid, it adds a fun flirty touch to the look, although I’m seeing a huge trend with fishtails at the moment. These styles tend to look best with a loose bang, a side part, and a bit of texture. Prep with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray if your hair is too straight. The best part about the braid is that if your hair gets wet, you can take out the braid, add some beach spray, and you have instant undone, beach-chic hair.”
