Trend Alert: Ombré Lips

We thought we left the ombré trend in 2015… with our hair… but it’s back and it’s the latest lip color du jour. Forget matching lip liner to lipstick, the fiercest pouts channel a young Victoria Beckham during her Posh Spice days – well, kind of. The ombré lip trend of today is much more subtle than dark brown liner and nude lipstick, and it’s über chic, giving you a pout that appears bigger and fuller.

Celebrity makeup artist Troy Jensen (who’s done up the iconic Cindy Crawford, among others) tells BeautyBanter that he’s been creating ombré lips on his celeb clients ever since eyeing the trend on Naomi Campbell in the ’90s.

Read on for some expert tips to master this latest lip craze:

How-to: Troy says, “Any shade combination could work as long as the outer shade is much darker than the inner lip shade. First prep lips with a lip balm, next apply a wide lip liner to the outer lip line and a paler lip color to the center of the lips blended slightly to where you still see the liner.” Troy also suggests using two products over one, “You want a deep shade and a lighter or brighter shade to really get that ombré look.”

Tom Ford’s Shade & Illuminate Lips kits ($60) leave the guessing out of finding the perfect pairing for ombré lips and come in 6 different shade duo’s for subtle to dramatic ombré lip looks. Our fave shades: Possession and Impulse.

Troy’s favorite: Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo ($32), perfect for creating an ombré lip because of its unique tip that allows for precise application. There’s 20 shades to choose from for endless ombré combo’s, pair Liberator (a deep Berry) with Creator (a soft pink nude).

NYX Ombre Lip Duo ($6), is double-ended for the perfect liner to match the perfect lip shade, Freckles & Speckles is our jam.

Kat Von D Everlasting Lip Duo: Lip Contour Edition ($19), contour, ombré, same thing.

Ciaté London Liquid Velvet ($19), use Dazed (taupe) as an outer shade with Delight (dusty nude) in the middle.

Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Lip ($27), is dual-ended with a highlighter to create fuller, ombré-d lips with ease.

Bésame Masterliner Lip Contour Pencil ($22), two complementary shades to line and fill lips to ombré perfection. We love Cocoa/Naturale, a neutral chocolate brown and a natural beige.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($27), pair Do Me Baby with Sex Machine for a pinky ombré pout, or Lonely Heart with Bell De Jour for a very ’90s ombré lip à la Naomi Campbell.
