The Sunscreen Diaries
Sun’s out, sunscreen’s on (it better be!). Every summer, a slew of new and innovative sunscreens hit the market, but there are those tried-and-tested hero products that we can’t forget about. Sunscreen is a product you should be using all year round, but in the warmer summer months, re-application is key. Also, we’re more apt to raise our SPF number to at least 30.
Here are seven sunscreens worth their marketing hype. Sun protection plus anti-aging benefits? There’s literally nothing more important that you’ll be putting on your face this season.
Juice Beauty SPF 30 Oil-Free Moisturizer ($30) – This oily skin staple is full of antioxidants to give anti-aging benefits, while being free of oils (so it won’t clog pores).Like all Juice Beauty products, this sunscreen is free of parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances.
Supergoop Invincible Setting Powder SPF 45 ($30) – A powder that controls summer’s shine and provides 100% mineral-based sun protection. The easy-to-use brush applicator makes this sunscreen one of our favorites for reapplication. Comes in three shades and translucent.
MyChelle Sun Shield Liquid Tint SPF 50 ($21) – Lightweight, oil-free formula with major sun protection (SPF 50!) and a hint of tint. Comes in two shades: natural tan and nude, and leaves the complexion glowy and gorgeous.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Cooling Water-Lotion Sunscreen ($27) – For the face and the body, this waterproof sunscreen hydrates and offers heavy sun protection simultaneously. The extra lightweight formula has a texture that “transforms like water on the skin.”
Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 ($34) – Sensitive skin? This is our pick for you. The sheer formula is a cult-favorite, delivering moisture, minimizing fine lines, improving skin texture with zero white residue. Gentle enough for the most sensitive skin types (which need the most sun protection as well).
Dr. Barbara Sturm Sun Drops SPF 50 ($145) – A lightweight sun serum that can be applied mixed into your moisturizer or layered on top. This unique formula also promotes regeneration of damaged cell structures.
Elta MD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 ($33) – We’d be remiss to do a sunscreen roundup without including Elta MD UV Clear, which is our number one choice for acne-prone skin. It actually helps curb acne while also protecting against sun damage, and it goes on incredible clear. If you suffer from acne, this sunscreen is a must.
