The Benefits of Dry Brushing

Dry brushing seems to be the latest health craze (just take a look on your Instagram feed). While the technique has been around for centuries (it’s the oldest body care trick in the book — quite literally!), its recent resurgence can be attributed to newfound celebrity and influencer raves — and skincare companies creating and promoting products to appease the demand. But what exactly does dry brushing do? Good question.

We turned to one of our absolute favorite facialists, Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist and Founder of Joanna Vargas Salon and Skincare Collection, to break down the benefits of dry brushing.

Beauty Banter: What is dry brushing?
Joanna Vargas: I love dry brushing: it’s my favorite method of body exfoliation because it is multi-tasking, and I recommend it all the time. The stimulation of the lymphatic system is true, and it’s your lymphatic system that really helps move out toxins and bring in good nutrients to every cell in the body. Dry brushing also increases elasticity and lifts your trouble spots like the butt and back of the thighs.

BB: How does it work?
JV: Dry brushing increases blood flow, which is healthy, but its main purpose is to stimulate collagen production which will help to thicken the skin and lessen the appearance of fat cells. It also dramatically increases elasticity, so it’s great for lifting and toning a problem area. Start at the tops of the feet and brush upwards towards the heart. Spend extra time on areas that tend to be more stagnant, like the inner thigh, and don’t forget to include the backs of the arms and the back.

BB: How long does it take to see results?
JV: Results usually appear within the first two weeks!

Smooth, glowing skin, increased collagen, and less fat? Yes, please!
