#TBT: Kohl Eyeliner
This week, we’re throwing it way, way back. As in, B.C. Kohl eyeliner is possibly one of the oldest beauty products in history, dating back to Ancient Egypt. This beauty staple has continued to be a coveted item in women (and men’s) makeup arsenals, moving from the eyes of Cleopatra to the iconic Twiggy and all the way to emo punk rockers like Pete Wentz. Surprisingly, “kohl” formulas don’t actually have an ounce of actual kohl in them since the mineral isn’t FDA approved in the U.S. The name simply refers to the color: Dark, moody black.
Although Cleopatra had a perfect cat eye, updated formulations look best when smudged around your lash line for a slept-in look. These products are the best way to achieve that perfectly imperfect appearance:
If you covet a formula that creates a great smudge yet still stays put all day, try Too Faced Bulletproof 24 Hour Eyeliner ($22). The accompanying blending ball creates a true smoldering eye, perfect for seducing a crush.
A bit creamier than other formulas, Becca Automatic Eye Pencil ($23) goes on surprisingly smooth. It features a built-in sharpener for times when you want a bit more precision.
Maybelline Master Kajal by EyeStudio Cream Kohl Eyeliner ($6) really glides over the eye effortlessly, thanks to its infusion of several oils; this means no pulling or tugging and, therefore, no wrinkles! We also love the no-poke cone design because, let’s face it, concentration doesn’t always come easily.
Most makeup artists’ sharpen their eye pencils before every.single.use. Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner ($20) does the work for you, with a sharpener inside the cap for a precise point every time you use it.
Like a super chic Crayola crayon, Burberry Beauty Effortless Kohl Pencil ($30) is incredibly smooth as well as highly pigmented. For a diversion from classic black, try the rich oxblood shade.
