#TBT: Ali MacGraw’s Pin-Straight Strands

Ali MacGraw stole our hearts in Love Story, but it was her pin-straight strands that gave us serious mane envy… even today. Ali ruled the impossibly long, sleek and shiny hair before chemical straighteners or flat irons were even invented. In all likelihood, she probably used a clothing iron to flatten her locks! While we certainly don’t encourage that technique, we do enthusiastically recommend taking inspiration from Ali and mixing things up from the tried-and-true beach waves to the silky straight.

Tim Rogers, Creative Director for Living Proof, gave us some insight on how to mimic the pin-straight strands:

BB: What is the best way to achieve Ali MacGraw’s perfectly straight locks?

TR: A flawless blowout using an extra large boar bristle brush, then pressing one-inch sections with a flat iron on medium heat.

BB: What measures can you take to avoid heat damage when trying this look?

TR: Living Proof No Frizz Humidity Shield ($22) will not only lock in the style during the blowout, it will protect against heat and UV damage when used on dry hair. It’s a perfect finisher.

BB: With rising temps, humidity is becoming more of an issue. How can you “weather-proof” straight locks during the summer?

TR: Living Proof Prime Style Extender ($20) weather-proofs each strand in an invisible, weightless coating that is ‘hydra-phobic.’ It literally resists the humidity that can disrupt a super-straight style.

The right tools and products are obviously vital to successfully get straight locks. In addition to the ones mentioned above, here are more straight-making must haves:

A quality flatiron is absolutely crucial. Cannot emphasize that enough! Drybar Smooth Operator Flatiron ($125) gets the job done quickly with minimal damage. Plus, the yellow color is just downright cheery to look at, especially early in the morning.

The ultimate trifecta for all hair, but especially straight styles, is softness, silkiness, and shininess. Sachajuan Styling Cream ($29) does all that and more. Apply it pre-blowout and prepare to be blown away.

Unless you were graced with god-given pin-straight locks, some serious heat styling will be required. Color Wow Speed Blow Dry Spray ($24) not only protects your strands, but will speed up dry time.

Inevitably, the dog days of summer will require you to pull out the big guns. On those wet or sticky occasions, look no further than ColorProof HumidityRx Anti-Frizz Weatherproof Spray ($29) to repel moisture and humidity all day long.
