How To: Wear Orange

By | how to | 4 Comments

Last year, after Pantone of the Pantone Matching System (a universal color system used in printing, textiles, paints, plastics, etc) chose  tangerine tango as its color of the year, the bright orange with a pop of red started showing up on faces all over the runway and red carpet. While you might fear the bold hue, it’s time to get over it. Orange is back again this spring as the must have color to wear on lips, cheeks and eyes.

Tangerine isn’t as scary a color as you’ve been led to believe. In fact, it can be very wearable – even fun – but the key is learning how to wear it properly. You don’t want to do a bright orange eye, instead it’s a wash of coral (think peach) with dark brown or black to lightly smoke it out. And as for as a bright lip is concerned, for those afraid of the vibrant tangerine hue, the key is to ease into it with a gloss or stain that isn’t as pigmented but still keeps the look on trend.

For tips on how to wear tangerine, I asked Erik Soto, Sephora PRO. Here’s what he had to say.

1. How do you make this trend wearable for eyes and lips?
The Color of the Year Tangerine Tango is a great shade that complements and brightens all complexions. On the eyes it can be worn in the form of an eye shadow as either a soft wash of color with other neutrals or a pop of orange on the eyelid. For a more subtle approach to the eye, you can also layer two of the Sephora + Pantone Universe eyeliners together on the lash line. For the day, use the SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE Color of the Year Chestnut, Pantone #19-1118 Eyeliner and then layer the Tangerine Tango Twist, Pantone #17-1463 Eyeliner on top so it creates contrast. For a darker look use the Color of the Year Eyeliner in Meteorite. This is a great shade to wear on lips! The Sephora + Pantone Universe Crème Lipstick is great because it is buildable color. Apply color to lips using a lip brush so that you can ease into this bright shade. The SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE Lip Gloss Set also offers a variety of finishes for you to wear.

2. What’s the tangerine day look? And the night?
During the day opt for a more neutral look utilize the SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE Color of the Year Eyeshadow Quad specifically applying a sheer application of the orange shade to lid. Line eyes with the SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE Color of the Year Chestnut, Pantone #19-1118 Eyeliner. To take the look into night I would apply the Tangerine Tango eye shadow in the crease and blend up and outward. To create more contrast I would add the dark brown or black shadow to the outer corner for a more dramatic effect. The darker the eye the softer the lips should be, so you can use a lighter peachy/orange version of Tangerine Tango.

3. Who looks best in tangerine?
All skin tones have a small hint of orange no matter how light or dark the complexion. For example if you have brown eyes, Tangerine Tango will make eyes appear lighter and really pop. For women with blue or green eyes Tangerine Tango acts as a contrasting color and will make the eyes the main makes the eyes pop because they are high contrast. If the Tangerine Tango Crème Lipstick is too bright opt for one of the SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE Color of the Year Lip Glosses instead.

4. What are your top 4 favorite orange products?
2. Yves Saint Laurent CRÈME DE BLUSH in 4 Audacious Orange
3. Stila Lip & Cheek Stain in Mango Crush
4. Benefit Cha Cha Tint

Makeup Bag: Fashion Designer Charlotte Ronson

By | makeup bag | One Comment

“My beauty philosophy is all about less is more. Enhancing your beauty while still feeling like yourself. I prefer a sun-kissed, healthy glow all year round so I created products like A Summer’s Kiss Face & Body Glow, A Perfect Mess Beach Hair, 2 X A Charm Blush/Bronzer as part of my exclusive beauty line for Sephora.

I used to buy makeup solely for the packaging and now I am actually intrigued by the enhancing and beautifying effects. I am lucky to have so many creative and inspiring girl friends and family members in my life, as well as being given the opportunity to work with Sephora, who are the world’s top beauty brand. I try my best to fully take advantage of their knowledge on a daily basis.

Every season I put on a runway show and obviously the clothes are what I’m selling but the hair and make-up are just as crucial in creating the finished look.

I partnered with Sephora for my beauty line and it happened somewhat organically. I had always wanted to expand into beauty, but I knew I wanted to be able to translate my design aesthetic in an authentic way.

I like an understated beauty and my line represents that. The products seamlessly transition from day to night, and are uncomplicated, portable, and easy to use for an effortlessly chic look. You still feel like you, but just enhanced. Women like Kate Moss, Lauren Hutton, Jane Birkin, and Bianca Jagger are my beauty inspirations.

Makeup Bag:

My makeup bag is one that I designed for my Holiday collection, I used the same lace that I used in my ready to wear collection for holiday. This bag is exclusive to Sephora and in my makeup bag is:

Charlotte Ronson A Perfect Mess Beach Hair: A Perfect Mess is the perfect beach spray that was inspired by my mother. She always has that perfectly beach-chic, tousled hair. It’s light scent reminds me of a perfect beach day. It’s great because it moisturizes and also protects your hair from the sun.

Charlotte Ronson A Perfect Kiss Lip Gloss:I love all of my lip glosses which are held in their own heart-shaped tubes. They are named after my friends and sisters. They are lightweight, sheer and not sticky. I use two, in particular, quite frequently. Samantha is a light pink, which is perfect for all day, everyday. Annabelle is a sheer red; This pop of colour is fun and unique without being too loud.

Charlotte Ronson 2 X A Charm Blush/Bronzer in Abby and Mindy: Abby Elliott is an amazing actress-comedienne on Saturday Night Live. She always looks fresh-faced and glowing. Mindy Kaling is also an amazingly talented actress, writer and comedian. Their cheeky personalities inspired these vibrant color combinations. 2x A Charm is one of my favorites and it’s one of the new products from my Spring collection. They are double ended cream sticks, each with a blush on one side and a bronzer on the other to impart a sheer, natural wash of color onto my cheeks. They feature a rich, creamy texture that glides and blends easily to create a natural, blushing glow. The blush/bronzer is great for your cheeks, face, and even your lips.

Charlotte Ronson All Eye Need Eyeshadow Quad in Henrietta: This is our best seller at Sephora. It’s named after my sister Henrietta who is a lawyer, YAY. This is an eyeshadow quad with a unique light filter technology. The colors are really easy and wearable and compliment all complexions. You can apply a little or layer them up for nighttime. They are easy to blend and build and also provide anti aging properties — can’t beat that!!

Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer in Honey: This is my go-to. No matter what, I always have it with me. It’s magical. I apply it under my eyes and it helps to hide my dark circles. It blends effortlessly.

Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara: It has a big wand that goes on smoothly. You literally only have to apply it once or twice. It truely gives the appearance of long, luscious lashes.

Charlotte Ronson Double XO Lipstick/Lipstain in Katherine: This is a lipstick/lip stain; It’s a perfect red for the day as it’s bold but wearable. It’s just an easy color and you can wear it as a lipstick, a stain, lipstick over stain, stain over lipstick.

Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels: These, Sarah Howard told me about. They’re the perfect remedy for tired eyes. She told me to apply them while you do your eye makeup and by the time your finished, your eyes will look as good as new.

Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry Me: It’s a lip balm that has a little hint of sheer red and it moisturizes. My makeup artist Beau Nelson told me about it.

Stila Liquid Eyeliner Pen: I’m just learning how to do my own eyeliner. This pen gives you a nice straight line and it’s almost foolproof. I use it for my nighttime look with the Eyes to Kill Mascara, my Abby Bronzer/Blush, and maybe a soft, understated red Annabelle lipgloss.

Rodin Olio Lusso Luxury Face Oil: My friend Hedi [Gores] told me about this. I put the oil under my eyes when I wake up and before I go to bed . It helps re-hydrate, and i apply this then my under-eye concealer as it helps it go on smoothly. I blot a little because you don’t want your face to look oily.

NARS Lipstick in Tonkin: I just love this. It’s a matte lipstick in a mauve-pink, basically my lip color. It’s a perfect neutral wear.
MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl: This matches the NARS Tonkin. Sometimes it’s nice to wear a little lip liner to define the shape of my lips and make them appear fuller. At night if I wear the Nars lipstick, I’ll also wear the lip liner with a cat eye, which I’ve recently learned to do!”

Charlotte Ronson For Sephora

By | makeup | 2 Comments

I am so excited about this latest partnership. My friend and clothing designer, Charlotte Ronson has partnered up with beauty maven Sephora for a very wearable cosmetic line!

Last night was the launch dinner in NYC and we got our very first hands-on look at the products… Let me tell you, they do not disappoint! The 14 sku line includes 4 eye shadow quads, a blush/ bronzer trio, a finishing powder, 6 shades of lipgloss, a body bronzer, and a beach spray for the hair. All of the products are named after Charlotte’s family and close friends (a.k.a. her muses), many of whom we’ve written about on this very site – (click the name to read about the fab lady from Beauty Banter) Eleanor Ylvisaker (lipgloss), my personal girl crush, Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss (luminizer, bronzer, blush trio), Dani Stahl (purple shadow quad), and Tessa Benson (lipgloss)

Early favorites include: The luminizer, bronzer, blush trio (above) – a.k.a. 3 X A Charm; All Eye Need Eye Shadow Palette in Nicole (as in Richie, colors are the perfect range of earth tones – above), A Perfect Kiss Lip Gloss in Annabelle (Charlotte’s hottie little sis, color is a glossy red that is perfect for fall with some mascara and eye liner and flawless skin) and Eleanor (color is a pearlized pink brown that is great for day or compliments a smoky eye for a night look), and definitely the A Perfect Mess Beach Hair (anyone who knows Charlotte is well aware that she has incredibly perfect beach-chic hair year round – finally, she’s bottled it up and selling it! Charlotte says this product is inspired by her mother, Ann Dexter-Jones).

All of the prices are very reasonable (ranging from $14.00 for a lippy to $22.00 for a shadow quad and $28.00 for the blush trio) and, as I mentioned earlier, the line is entirely wearable. While it’s not littered with of-the-moment colors, these are staple hues that will always be on trend. And I like how the range is small enough that you won’t be overwhelmed with choices – there’s something for everyone, but not too much that you won’t be able to decide.

Meanwhile, the pigments give great hue, the glosses are shiny and taste like lemon mint (yum) and the body glow bronzing gel gives a faux tan color that will have you looking like a summer goddess year round!

All products are available September 15 exclusively at Sephora, but you can buy online NOW (just in time for fall) at www.sephora.com.

Happy Shopping!!!

The Little Things In Life…

By | makeup | 3 Comments

I just popped into my local Sephora for some beauty R & R. Actually, I was all out of my foundation (Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation), so I went in with a purpose, picked up my color, and walked directly to the cash register line.

And that’s where they get me every time. Either side of the line is filled with the cutest mini and travel size products that I don’t need but are dying to own. As if I don’t have enough beauty products at home! My eyes immediately focused on the Sephora Exclusive Benefit 3-in-1 Feelin’ Cheeky! Minis: 3 .13 fl oz. jars of Posie Tint, a poppy-pink tinted lip and chink stain for a fuschia flushed look, High Beam, a luminescent complexion enhancer that highlights brow and cheek bones, and the cult favorite, Bene Tint, a rose-tinted lip and cheek stain for a just-ate-a-basket-of-wild-strawberries-look!

A $26.00 value for $15.00 – what more could a beauty-obsessed girl possibly ask for? Not to mention, High Beam is one of my all time favorite highlighters and Bene Tint is legitamitely one of the most amazing, stay on all day long, red as blood, lip stains on the market. Plus, I’m quite keen on the travel size bottles. They’re actually more conveniently shaped to fit into my evening clutches. The original, larger size bottles are quite clunky and burdensome.

If you’re like me, and you love a good tint and highlighter, then this purchase is a no-brainer. Grab yours today, before Benefit realizes people are loving the minis better than the real thing and pull the plug on the entire trio!

ENDLESS SUMMER: tarte Beauty in a Box for Sephora

By | Uncategorized | No Comments
Although we can’t bottle up the summer sun for a rainy day, tarte has figured out a way to at least box up a bit of sun kissed beauty with their Sephora-exclusive Beauty in a Box: Bronze Smoky Eye ($45).
When I heard about the collection I thought it sounded like a great way to hang on to that summer glow just a bit longer. But when it arrived from our friends at tarte, I was thrilled to see it was also filled with some favorites suitable for any season.
All tarte products are free of parabens, phtalates, sulfates, petrochemicals and synthetics, and this set of six eco-chic products are all waterproof, water resistant or long-lasting formulas. The collection includes a deluxe-size lights, camera, splashes! – the waterproof version of their INCREDIBLE lights, camera, lashes! mascara. Also in a smaller, throw-in-your-luggage/purse size is park avenue princess bronzing powder that works well with all skin tones.
The other four items are FULL SIZE (this adds up to $112 worth of product for under fifty bucks). For a bit of fun, tarte has created a summer-inspired take on the traditional charcoal smoky eye by giving it a bronze twist. Following their step-by-step instructions, you can create the look using lock & roll 12-hour shadow in burnt bronze, and EmphasEYES waterproof shadow/liner in plum. I’m a bit of a klutz when it comes to the whole smoky eye look, but the ease of control with this shadow and liner makes it’s virtually goof proof. And it’s a fun take on the sultry classic.
The clean slate natural face primer, and rise and shine lip gloss and stain in nude are perfect day or night. The stain is essentially like their brilliant cheek stains only in a tube. Wear the stain alone for a hint of color, or add a layer of gloss for a bit more shine. And the primer is incredible and long-lasting without harsh chemicals.
The set is available for a limited time at Sephora stores and online at sephora.com

Sephora by OPI Nail Wraps

By | Uncategorized | One Comment

To wear or not to wear… Nail sheets with pritns on them! Would your claws approve? Sephora and OPI are hoping you say YES, as their collaboration has just launched CHIC, an innovative line, which creates customized nails, featuring a myriad of patterns and prints including anchor, stars, checkers, tiger, fishnet, chrome lace, black & gold geometric, or skulls.

My friend Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia was sporting some fierce design on her nails. She said they were some new form of manicure – not polish – but a wrap that sticks to the nail. Interest piqued, I decided to investigate online.  That’s when I stumbled across Chic Print for Nails.

Personally, I’m having a flashback: colored Lee Press-On Nails. Oy.

How to use:

“One set of Chic Print for Nails contains 16 nail patches of varying widths, for a one-time application to fingers or toes. The nail patch is a solid-film material with an adhesive back that is heat activated. Applying heat creates conformability, allowing the patch to fit over the compound curves of your nails and seal onto the nail bed. The patent-pending material removes easily with heat.”

As trends go, this is yet another way to accessorize the claws. But I like it… it’s got pizazz. And if their number of facebook friends means anything (1,234), these nails are the new “it” manicure must-have!

PRICE TAG: $15.00 for a set.

Has anyone tried them? Do they work?

THINK PINK – Part Three

Okay, so I thought this would be my final post on eco-friendly Breast Cancer Awareness Month greatness but there is simply so much out there I’ll be back with a few more posts next week. Today I have a fabulous collection of organizations to share, all benefiting from the philanthropy of companies that we love here at Beauty Banter.

My friend Debbie recently became a rep for Avon (announcing it with the clip from Edward Scissorhands when Avon came a’calling) in part because of their commitment to women’s health. To date they have donated over $585 million to cancer research and education and as part of BCA Month, Avon has created the Breast Cancer Crusade Moisturizing Bar Soap ($4), a grapefruit-scented face and body bar, along with a collection of great items including a reusable tote from Marimekko ($10). 100% (yes, 100%) of net profits benefit the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade and Avon Foundation for Women (all orders are made through Avon reps, so the link above will take you to Debbie’s site to shop. If you already have your own Avon rep, contact them directly to shop for the cause).

Boscia Skin Care is supporting the Love/Avon Army of Women, which seeks to recruit one million healthy women of all ages and ethnicities, breast cancer survivors and those at high-risk, to partner in research that will one day lead to the cure.” For every package of the limited edition Boscia Rose Blotting Linens ($10) 10% will benefits Dr. Love’s foundation to “accelerate our understanding of what causes breast cancer and how to end it.”

KORRES announces they’ve “Gone Pink” to support the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund. While shopping you not only give to research but you save at the same time. All month long shopping at the KORRES site, selected “Pink Products” including body butters, shower gels and makeup will be 20% off AND 10% of proceeds benefit the NBCCF.

They’re also using this wonderful cause to introduce three new value sets called Lip Kits for the Cure. Available in Radiant Red, Perfect Pink and Naturally Nude, they retail for $19.50 but contain between $48 and $54 worth of KORRES Color lipsticks, liners and glosses. 10% of proceeds go to the NBCCF. As will 10% of the price of pink-ribboned giftwrap if you decide to pick up presents while you’re there.

KORRES GIVEAWAY: through October 14th get a free Quince 50ml body butter for every purchase of $25 or more.

Sephora has created several limited edition items for the month of October to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. $1 from the sale of each paraben free Super Shimmer Lip Gloss in Forever Pink and BCA Pink Eyelash Curler ($16) benefit the BCRF. Spring Ahead – Expert Color Tips

By | makeup | 2 Comments

Spring is here (well, almost – but it sure feels like it)! An extra hour of daylight, sun, short-shorts and beautiful new hues!

We decided to ask an expert what makeup colors – and looks – we should rock this Spring.

Sephora’s Pro Beauty Team Expert and winner of the Sephora MVP Pro Challenge, Sara Biria, gave Beauty Banter an **exclusive interview** on all things Spring (she dishes out some fab tips!).

Here’s what Sara had to say:

What is the overall spring color palette?
The overall spring color palette includes bright natural tones as well as romantic pastels. Greens, light pinks and oranges are very popular this season – shades that are not too bright or too soft.
For lips, it’s all about bright and matte or glossy and neutral, which is great because these colors will work well with any skin tone.

What will be the makeup focal point this Spring?
The focus this spring is to create balance all over. You want to highlight and add definition to the eyes using soft colors. Adding a nice pop of pastel fusion color on the cheeks will create a nice balance and soften your look. To complete the look, apply either a bright lip color or high shine lip gloss.

What are specific Spring trends and how can this translate into the real world?
This spring it’s all about enhancing your beauty by keeping the makeup natural, yet still defining your features. Keep eyebrows and eyes soft by staying away from harsh liner as well as too much color. Keep the skin clean and fresh, but don’t be afraid to try a bold lip color since the rest of your look is soft and natural.

5 must-have Spring products are…
1. Sephora Moroccan Eyeshadow Palette (pictured) – This color palette not only gives you the option to wear a day look, it also allows you to create the perfect night look. The colors are versatile so anyone can wear them.
2. Spring nails are as important as your spring make-up. You can update your nail collection with the five new candy shades from Sephora by OPI Digital Diva Collection.
3. YSL’s Pure Coral is a prefect shade for anyone who wants that extra pop. The gloss also comes fabulous shades of pink, orange and beige neutral.
4. Kat Von D for Sephora’s bright tone liquid liners
5. Kat Von D For Sephora’s high pigmented lipsticks.

Finally, you should never leave home without…
…something for your lips, whether it’s a lip gloss or lipstick. You also want to make sure to have a highlighter with you, like the Touche Clat from YSL or the Ohh la lift from Benefit. A highlighter can instantly pick you up and refresh the skin – great to use under the eyes, on the bridge of the nose and the chin.

Thanks, Sara!

P.S. I’m dying to try the OPI Digital Diva Collection… anyone sporting the hues?
