WEEKLY MUST HAVE: Tarina Tarantino Pearl Glow Primer

By | weekly must-have | 2 Comments

I’m not going to lie, I don’t always use a primer in the winter months. My skin is more sensitive and dry and I just don’t feel like I need the added coverage. But come Spring and Summer, and a primer is the first step to my everyday makeup routine (when I wear face makeup).

But Spring is all about perfect, glowing, dewy skin – and if you weren’t blessed with it via the gene pool, then you better fake it.

Which leads us to my current discovery: Tarina Tarantino Pearl Glow Primer. It gives you that ethereal, “glowing from the inside” luminosity. It’s super light and, like all primers, should be applied after a moisturizer, prior to makeup. Think of it as carrying around your very own hand held lighting equipment – for that perfectly highlighted, pop of pearl shimmer. It makes your skin that beautiful.

I’m semi-obsessed with this specific primer because it looks so good alone, sans makeup. Truth be told, I have yet to wear it with makeup at all! And when I apply after my morning moisturizer, I use nothing else, yet people stop me and ask what’s different about me? Am I well rested? Did I just get a facial? A peel? The secret to my glowing skin… a glowing primer.

Pearl Glow reminds me of another longtime favorite: Fresh Twilight Primer, although the Fresh one is definitely more creamy in consistency, hence it is a bit thicker and heavier on the skin. I think I’m actually preferring Tarina Tarantino’s lighter, liquidy fluid. It casts a softer glow and doesn’t cake up even the slightest. I have a feeling it’ll look pretty fab with makeup on too. Will try it tonight, but I’m sure that it won’t disappoint.

A primer is a must in the makeup regimen. Every good makeup artist will tell you that the primer is the first step to a successful makeup application – it locks in color, allows makeup to last hours longer and evens out skintone for a flawless canvas from which to paint.

For a quick recap on how to use a primer, click here. It’s a must read!

Well, ladies, it’s been years in the making but Nars has finally launched their Pro Prime Primer and… it’s fantastic! It comes in two formulas – the PRO-PRIME Pore Refining Primer and the PRO-PRIME Multi-Protect Primer SPF 30 and the makeup artists – and their celebrity clients – are going gaga over the product.

I tried the Pore Refining Primer and loved how it kept my makeup in place sans the shine, yet it didn’t make me break out or irritate my skin. It’s oil-free (which I love) and  it didn’t have that waxy, silicone feel that so many quality primers seem to have. In fact, it felt infinitely lighter. The consistency was a bit liquidy, but once rubbed into the skin it absorbed easily and the makeup applied without a problem.

Here’s the word on the street regarding Nars’ latest and greatest product:

“It was perfect to achieve a smooth and flawless finish and perfectly matte skin,” said makeup artist Fabiola, on the primer she used for Mila Kunis’ look at the Cosmopolitan’s Fun, Fearless Female Of The Year  event in NYC (the honor of which was given to Mila!)

“ I am a huge fan of the Pore-Refining Primer and love using this before a big event or red carpet,” said Monika Blunder about the primer she used on Amanda Seyfried at the LA premiere of Red Riding Hood. “Pores instantly look smaller and skin looks more matte. When I apply foundation over the primer, it just glides on and make up stays on for hours.”

“I use this primer because it’s an amazing lightweight primer that creates a silky, smooth, nourished surface,” said KC Fee, who used the product on Kate Mara at the 2011 SAG Awards. “The added bonus is the SPF which is perfect for daytime red carpet events. It’s become my go-to primer.”

“This multi tasking primer soothes skin and provides a lightweight and creamy texture. The SPF is perfect for on-the-go and the formula smoothes lines for an immaculate finish,” said NARS artist Jenny Smith who used the new primer on JULIA STILES for her attendance at Cynthia Rowley’s Fall 2011 show during New York Fashion Week.

Drugstore Find: L’Oreal Studio Secrets Primer

By | Uncategorized | 3 Comments

I’m a huge advocate of priming the skin before applying makeup. Like an artist with a canvas, it’s imperative to prime the area before painting. Same is true with the face.

I love Make Up Forever HD Primer, Rock & Republic Primer and Smashbox’s Photofinish Primer. But these can run you around 20-30 dollars and for something that is inevitably going to be coverd up and layered over, you may not want to spend the big bucks on primer.

Enter L’Oreal’s newest secret: Studio Secrets Professional Primer. This 2-step pre-makeup process will leave skin smooth and resurfaced, even and neutralized.

STEP 1: There’s also a Magic Perfecting Base which gives skin an instant matte look and silky finish (you use this prior to the primer colors). As with most primers, it also covers slight imperfections and evens out skin tone due to large pores and/or wrinkles. This particular one leaves skin SO soft it’s literally transformed into baby skin.

STEP 2: The primer comes in 3 formulas which instantly neutralize color imperfections and add radiance: Anti-Redness, a green formula to neutralize skin redness; Anti-Dullness for light skin and Anti-Dullness for dark skin. Both illuminate and add warmth to the skin.

Using the 2 “primers” in conjunction really does leave the skin illuminated, poreless and flawless. It’s so worth the extra step in makeup application.

So, remember prime before painting. Your face will thank-you.

Less is More: DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer

By | Uncategorized | 2 Comments

I have a love/hate relationship with my pores. Mostly hate. While I understand the important part they play, I really wish they could do it a little less visibly. And I think that is why I have become so infatuated with primers. I don’t need skin airbrushed beyond a flaw but primers fill in pores and fine lines just enough to make my skin look polished and fresh.

When I attended the Hollywood Helping Haiti Golden Globes event in January I was introduced to a new product from DDF Skincare, Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer. The DDF rep pulled out the sleek, space age tube and explained how it works. The double helix-shaped peach gel in the center fills in pores (instant gratification) while the clear gel exfoliates and hydrates (for long-term pore refinement). So, basically you get to have your cake and eat it, too.

Voted Best Pore Minimizer by SELF Magazine in 2009, the serum is made with Vitamin B3 and Niacinmide to exfoliate and Amino Peptide Vitamin E to hydrate and plump skin. In clinical tests, it was found to double the rate of skin renewal in five days. After three weeks users saw a 70% reduction in fine lines and 65% reduction in pore size. It’s moisturizing but not oily and as primers go the only thing it’s missing is an SPF to make it the ultimate multitasker.

I wear it without much makeup during the day, maybe some tarte cheekstain and a little mascara. But even on its own I love what I see, or technically what I don’t see, as it really does make my skin look like it had some help from Photoshop.

You can find DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer via DDF or in Sephora stores. xo alex.

I think face primers are absolutely genius. Most days I wear little more than a tinted moisturizer with SPF but adding a primer means the color goes on smoothly, reduces appearance of pores and lasts all day. I’ve found several brands that make a great product but most contained less than eco-friendly ingredients. So, when KORRES created a face primer, I was intrigued. I love, love, love the KORRES brand but could a silicone-free primer still do the job?

Absolutely. It was lighter than anything I’d ever used, closer to the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer than Smashbox Photo Finish. With a light, citrusy scent (probably the grapefruit peel oil), I applied the same amount I would with a heavier primer. I added Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20, some mascara and check tint and faced the heat of LA summer. My skin looked great all day. I am hooked.

What amazes me is how much it does while leaving out so much. No parabens, silicone, synthetic fragrance, sulfates, phalates, GMOs, mineral oils, synthetic dyes or phalates. All things our bodies and the environment do not need. While it isn’t oil free, my combination skin has had no problems. Personally, I’ve often found that what causes skin breakouts and irritations are the synthetics and petrolatum based ingredients in products.

Ninety-nine percent natural with 11.19 % organically farmed ingredients, and dermatologically tested, KORRES Face Primer carries the coveted seal of ECOCERT. While it prides itself on “skin soothing botanicals and Vitamin E that refine skin texture, minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce pore size,” you can be assured it also passed the highest international standards for ecology around. That’s beauty inside and out.

I Spy An Eye Primer

Fellow beauty enthusiast and Beauty Banter reader, Amanda Adwell, gives a “5 kiss” recommendation for Too Faced Shadow Insurance.

I’ve never used this stuff, but after reading Amanda’s rave review, I’m heading to my nearest Too Faced retailer (or clicking HERE) to purchase a tube!

Here’s what Amanda has to say:

“In a nutshell, this stuff is a godsend because I normally end up with creasy eye shadow halfway through the day. The first day I used it, I put my makeup on at 6am for work and by the end of the day it was still looking as fresh as when I first put it on, which has NEVER happened before. I even use it if I am just wearing mascara because it makes my eyes look brighter. The tube will last me a long time as well, the tiniest dab of it covered my entire eyelid. A little goes a long way and it comes in a super cute tube, too!”

Bye-bye crusty, creasy eye shadow!

**P.S. I always encourage recommendations, so if you LOVE a product, tell us about it!!! We want to share the beauty! After all, this site isn’t called Beauty BANTER simply so that we can have a monologue (frankly, I’m sick of hearing myself… kidding!). Let’s partake in a dialogue, ladies… Let’s banter all things beauty!**

A Girl’s Guide To…. Primers

By | Uncategorized | 11 Comments

We’re starting a new section here at Beauty Banter… A Girl’s Guide to… It’ll be filled with need to know info on the most important beauty and health issues surrounding us girls. Basically it’s a girl’s guide to being beautiful – from the inside to the outside. And if you wanna print them out or read them all together, simply scroll to the right and click on the label “a girl’s guide.”

Today’s girl’s guide is all about primers!

So, why prime, you ask? Well, a primer does a number of things. It fills in lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores. It also helps to create an even skin tone. It controls oil secretion and shine. And it readies the face for smooth, long lasting make-up application. It’s the perfect base for make-up as it mattifies the skin for an even, luminous effect. Without a primer, make-up would seep into your pores and lines, it would “cake” and within hours, your skin would start to look shiny, like your make-up needs a pick-me-up. So, basically, a primer does just that: it primes the skin for that fake flawless look that we’re all striving to attain.

Smashbox started the primer frenzy when they introduced their now infamous, Photo Finish Foundation Primer. Make-up artists went banana’s over this product that literally “creates a perfect canvas for foundation application… reduces the appearance of fine lines and pores for visibly softer skin.” It aided in flawless skin alone, or under make-up.

Recently, Smashbox has introduced: Photo Finish Primer Light (oil-free), Photo Finish with SPF 15 and Dermaxyl Complex ( an advanced peptide treatment that is supposed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles over time), Photo Finish Bronzing Foundation Primer (same as regular photo finish but with a bronze hue), Photo Finish Color Correcting Foundation Primer (Blend (counteracts discoloration), Balance (brightens dull skin) and Adjust (reduces redness), depending on your individual skin concerns), and, the newest installment, the Hybrid 2 In 1 Luminizing Primer (pictured), from the Green Room Collection. Basically, it’s Artificial Light in the inner tube and Photo Finish in the outer one. And the tube is recyclable!

With all of these new primers on the market, it’s hard to know exactly which one is right for you… I tend to stick with the original. There’s a reason that they are attempting to duplicate it into 8 similar products- because it works!

Another product that works to even skin creating a smooth canvas for make-up application is Clinique’s Pore Minimizer Instant Perfector. I first posted about this product when fellow beauty whore, Alex, reviewed British Vogue’s spring/summer must haves (back in January 07). Apparently, Kate Winslet doesn’t leave home without this product! And I’ve gotta say, I get it. Not only does this product truly produce flawless looking skin, it also de-shines, giving you a matte finish. Foundation slides right on and you’re never oily! This is a must-have product for people with sensitive and/ or oily skin. It’s so gentle and it really works wonders without any fear of break-outs!

I recently tried Cargo’s blu_ray High Definition Oil-Free Mattifier. This primer refines pores, minimizes lines and wrinkles, and creates a flawless look to help control oil and shine throughout the day. It adds a natural glow to your skin that is perfect to wear alone or under make-up. I use it prior to foundation because I want full coverage, but if you don’t need full coverage, this is a great product to use in lieu of a pressed powder as it virtually has the same qualities… sheer coverage with oil control. The company says that this product was formulated for, “use with high-definition film.” Hence, you’re ready for your close-up!

Another interesting product that has hit that market place is the “eye-primer.” Essentially, it’s the same thing as a face primer – allows for a smooth palette for make-up application, fills in lines and wrinkles, and keeps eye make-up on longer. I already doted on Fresh’s Anise Wrinkle Eraser (read post HERE), but Paula Dorf also makes an that’s pretty amazing! It’s a “light-textured cream that smoothes and neutralizes the eyelid so eye color looks true and stays on.” And no matter what tone your skin is, this is a neutral base that works on everyone!

So, that’s the skinny on primers — with a few of my favorites mentioned. Do you have a favorite PRIMER? Tell us and we’ll include it in the post!

Also, check back periodically as I test new primers that deserve a mention in the Girl’s Guide to Primers!
