alex’s eco-chic summer picks

By | makeup | 8 Comments
I’m melting. At least that’s how it’s felt the last few days. And so, with summer in full swing, I’ve switched up some of my daily hair, skin, and makeup choices to work with the intense heat.
With wavy hair, combination skin, and an inability to leave my house without mascara, it’s all about finding the best products to make me feel put together when I’d rather be in the pool cooling off. And, as always, trying to do it all without parabens, petrochemicals, or synthetics.
Everyone knows by now that my love of green beauty knows no end, but I must say that when it comes to SPF, I don’t care if you go eco or not, just be sure to slather on a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection. (Lecture over.) Personally, I opt for Burt’s Bees SPF 30 and, if I’m staying in the sun, a hat to offer extra protection.
While I like the idea of facial moisturizers with an SPF in them, I swear by Dr. Hauschka’s Normalizing Day Oil ($42.95), which is SPF-less. So post-Dr. H, I use California Baby’s SPF 30 Stick ($14.99). For a bit of color, I’ll add a few drops of Dr. H’s Translucent Bronze Concentrate ($39.95)as I blend the sunscreen to cheeks, nose, and chin. (You can pick all of this up at Whole Foods, too.)
My tan is of the faux sort, and one of the best ways to extend its life is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Year-round I adore Korres body butters, but I now add Shea Moisture’s Organic Raw Shea Chamomile ArganOil Baby Lotion ($9.99). The lotion, which has the consistency of Vaseline minus the petro chems, melts into the skin.
Most of my makeup favorites are by tarte – their waterproof and longwearing products stand up to 95 degree weather, like multiplEYE mascara ($24), park ave princess bronzer ($29), and Amazonian clay 12-hour blush in tipsy ($25) – which I’ll sometimes mix with dollface cheek stain ($30). I want to try their new clay concealer, but for now I still think ($8.95) does the trick. For lips, I love KORRES lip butters ($12) and highly recommend picking up this great set which gives you three for $19.
In this heat, I tend to keep my hair up (OK, I always seem to have my hair up), and so Goody Spin Pins ($6.29)are my go to. I’ll often throw on an elastic headband or pin back my shorter layers with barrettes by France Luxe ($9) – you can pick these up at J. Crew, too – or petite bobby pins from Goody ($2.99). For ponytails, I love the snag-free elastics from Sephora ($3.50), and the matchbook-like case that keeps them organized. If I wear it down, I spray on California Baby detangler ($11.49), and put it in a bun until it’s dry.
I switch purses often, but this summer, I’m never without a set of Spin Pins, ($6.99), a travel-sized tube of Korres Rice Bran mascara ($18), Revlon Superlustrous gloss in Firecracker with SPF 15 ($6.99),* and the limited edition tarte True Blood lip tint ($24).Both the gloss and lip tint can go from everyday to evening depending on how much you apply. The True Blood lip tint is my new favorite for a pop of bright color – and it also works well as a quick bit of cheek color, too. From day to evening, I’m covered!
For now, I’m off to sit outside and work by the pool – I suppose summer isn’t all bad. xo a.
*I know the Revlon isn’t an eco-pick but I am trying to find good SPF lip glosses. The search goes on.

There’s no denying the fact that Korres makes one of my all-time favorite body products: the guava body butter. I call it a souffle in a pump! I’ve been obsessed with this delicious body delight since it first hit the market.

Over the past few years, Korres has really stepped up their game with some incredible new additions to the line like the lip butters and Pomegranate Cleansing & Make Up Removing Wipes. WHAT IT DOES: WThis advanced formula is clinically proven to dramatically reduce wrinkles, significantly increase skin elasticity, and reduce puffiness and dark circles. Baobab Pulp extract, a natural polysaccharide, fights against muscle relaxation and gravity to create an instant lift. Yeast extract improves microcirculation to decrease dark circles while sugar-derived Betaine and Rhodiola Rosea extracts reduce eye puffiness by controlling excessive fluid build-up in the eye area.

This advanced solution stimulates cell growth and protein synthesis within the first 24 hours. The resulting improvement in skin-cell functioning dramatically repairs fine lines and wrinkles.

Eco-Trends 2010

By | Uncategorized | 25 Comments

The trend reports are in predicting what will be hot in twenty ten. And we at Beauty Banter don’t see any reason why you can’t have your cake and eat it too, as eco-beauty trend setters. Here are my picks for following the trends while keeping it green.

The Spring 2010 shows were filled with vibrant lip colors. From lipsticks to glosses, you can find fabulous eco-gorgeous shades worthy of any runway. Check out Vinyasa from tarte, Jane Iredale’s Nicole and Coral from KORRES.

For eyes, we’ll be seeing pastel shades with black mascara for a bit of contrast (making me think of the film Umbrellas of Cherbourgh). KORRES Abyssinia mascara in black would be a perfect match for tarte’s lock and roll creaseless shadow in lavender or Josie Maran’s perfect pink Parfait.

While lips are bold, nail polish is all about muted tones from gray to blush pink. Lately I’ve been wearing Pasha by Zoya. I’m also loving eco-laquers like Acquarella’s Bikini and Butter London’s perfect putty Fash Pack.

Pierce Mattie PR’s annual trend report says this year fragrance is all about stopping to smell the violets and carnation (which can be found in single note sprays at Sarah Horwitz Parfums). But since fragrance is such a personal choice, and rarely something I follow by trend, I recommend 2010 as the year you green your fragrance. Check out lines like Pacifica Perfume, Strange Invisible Perfumes and Red Flower. Or, visit someone who can custom blend oils to create the perfect fragrance for you (locally, I like Pure Sense by Paula).

TIP: Describing scent is best done through the senses rather than with words. Whether it be a perfume, a candle or even dryer sheets, bring the scents you love with you to help explain what it is you’re after.

While it may seem like a trend at the moment, green beauty boutiques will soon become a classic. Here in Los Angeles check out Vert, Green Line Beauty and The Organic Pharmacy. And let Beauty Banter know about the great eco-shops in your part of the world. We’d love to share your finds!

While online shopping is fabulous, shopping locally reduces packaging and fuel used in shipping, and most importantly you’re supporting local businesses.

Lastly, pick up some great reusable bags for the New Year! I adore BAGGU bags (and the new baby Baggu is perfect for smaller items), though I am loving the look of these metallic bags my friend Erin just told me about. From Anya Hindmarch to FEED bags, find a tote that you love and give up the shopping bag habit once and for all!

Have a happy, healthy, GREEN new year! xo alex.

You know what I love about December in Los Angeles? First, it’s finally cold enough for the sweaters and coats that disappear 11 months out of the year. Second, between Chanukah, Christmas, New Years and an insane number of Sagittarius friends and family, there’s always a party to attend. Here are my picks for getting made up quickly and out the door without sacrificing eco-savvy….

As soon as the temps drop so do the color of my nails. Zoya ($7) has dozens of deep reds and browns, and I’m loving a vampy shade called Norra on short, squared nails. For toes I opt for Eve, a fabulous red with a hint of sparkle. In a pinch, Sally Hansen’s new Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Color ($4.99) is fabulous in Mochachino or Rapid Red. One coat coverage dries in about a minute.

For face, I always start with Eris Collection’s Foundation Primer ($25). It’s oil and paraben free, evens out my skin and fills in any pores or fine lines. To conceal blemishes or undereye circles I grab MAC Mineralize Satinfinish Foundation ($29.50) and apply where needed. While the tarte treasure chest ($52) is perfect for eyes, cheeks and lips, sadly I can’t throw it in my bag and go. But at home it offers enough combinations for a year’s worth of party looks. For beauty at home or away, I’m layering apricot-hued cushion and sparkly brilliant from tarte’s Three Carats Mini Cheek Stain Set ($25) on my cheeks. The result is sunkissed with a bit of glimmer (not glitter).

I love the versatility of KORRES eye pencils to create sleek lines or smudgy, smoky effects. My favorites are the basic black and metallic grey. For brows I use tarte’s The Toolbox ($18) which includes pencil, gel, powder, wax…everything to define, tame and create the perfect brow. I love tarte lashhugger mascara for a great basic black. Normally $18, tarte currently offers two lash huggers for $20 in this limited edition set. If you want more color, KORRES Abyssian Oil Volumizing Mascara ($20) comes in purple, blue ad brown as well.

I finish off with a neutral lip, with KORRES Cherry Oil gloss in Light Pink or Nude. If I’m going bare legged, I love Michael Kors Leg Shine in Classic ($32). The moisturizing bar offers a bit of shimmer and shine to my pale winter legs (for $10 you can get a smaller version of Leg Shine exclusively at Sephora).

I keep a canister of Physician’s Formula Organic wear® 100% Natural Origin Facial Makeup Remover Towelettes ($9.95) on my nightstand. As , they’re gentle on the earth and your skin. No matter how exhausted I am, they’re incredibly effective for removing eye makeup quickly and easily. After a night of merriment…to all a good night! xo alex.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…have you noticed? Everywhere I look storefronts are filled with glitter and coffee table-sized holiday catalogs are arriving unable to fit in my mailbox. Getting into the holiday spirit, KORRES has a special offer for Beauty Banter readers on all their eco-luxurious products for bath and body. Whether you need to green your makeup routine for the parties ahead or want to gift one of their incredibly priced kits, KORRES is ready to make your holiday shopping as stress free as possible.

In the past I’ve mentioned how much I love KORRES gift and value sets. Whether it’s for skincare or cosmetics, they’re an economical way to go green while also trying out a variety of products. They also make fabulous gifts with their great packaging and beautiful designs.

This holiday, KORRES has an online exclusive shower gel trio, TRIPLE TREATS. The limited edition set includes three shower gels (in travel-approved sizes), making them perfect for your holiday getaway or as a gift. The set features the classic Jasmine and Guava scents as well as their new Japanese Rose. Free of sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrance and dyes, the shower gels are made for winter weather with their Active Aloe© formula to fight signs of aging, alongside shea butter, wheat proteins and aloe vera to soothe and soften skin. A great gift for men or women, the trio comes wrapped in silver holiday packaging and retails for $12 (a $21 value).

As a big fan of KORRES Color, I think the limited edition SUGAR PLUMS trio makes a great gift but it’s also a perfect way to add a bit more drama to your makeup bag for winter. If you’ve never tried KORRES lip butters, the plum is a great intro. The color is like a sheer wine stain but the moisture is the incredible part (rice wax and shea butter do the trick). Also included is a Plum Cherry Lip Gloss, which is more dramatic color and shine but still sheer enough for day or night. For more drama, add an extra coat for deeper color and a glossy finish. All glosses are made with vitamin E and C, and cherry oil which always reminds me of the cherry chapstick I called lipstick as a little girl. The final item in the set is the Plum Sunflower and Evening Primrose Simmering Eyeshadow. Designed for the most sensitive skin, the shadow is a gorgeous, shimmery plum. I love it applied to the lashline as a powdered liner. A $41 value, the set is $29.50.

Get a head start on your holiday shopping (or treat yourself) with a gift from KORRES to Beauty Banter. Shop online at www.korresusa.com and save 30% on all purchases through the holidays. My loves of KORRES began with their products for body, specifically Yoghurt Body Butter and Watermelon Body Scrub. With their commitment to eco-consciousness from concept to packaging, I am forever impressed by their selection. From haircare to skincare I use their products faithfully. More recently I began checking out the KORRES Color line from moisturizing lip balms and glosses to silicon-free primer. In greening my makeup one of the last things remaining were my old eyeliners. With the variety KORRES had to offer I was excited to give them a try.

I love eyeliner. But I was having trouble finding eco-friendly options I liked. The KORRES line offers 12 vibrant hues. It wasn’t actually so much a problem of finding a color I liked rather picking which one to use first. I have hazel eyes and my sister has green; we both found colors we loved in the KORRES line. I think the metallic brown is a great alternative to black and their green is a great deep color that made my eyes pop. My sister loved the cobalt blue. The pencil itself is perfect for making a sharp line but applies without pulling at the skin and the color lasts with minimal smudging (they’d also work well to create a smoky eye effect). Made using antioxidant Vitamin E to moisturize and macadamia oil which “rebalances dryness without clogging the pores or irritating the sensitive eye area” the liners are available individually for $16. KORRES offers are great value set including the black, blue black and gold for $25 (a $48 value).

This was also my chance to finally try KORRES mascara. For everyday the Provitamin B5 and Rice Bran mascara ($18) thrills me to no end because it not only nourishes lashes and creates volume but it also comes in five colors. FIVE. For those who want mascara without parabens, petrochemicals and other synthetics, you’re usually limited to black. Not always great for those with lighter hair or lashes. But KORRES offers this mascara in
black, blue black, grey green and brown. And they’ve just created a travel size in black ($8) perfect for your purse, suitcase or to give the line a try. For a more dramatic effect try the Abyssinia Oil mascara ($20). My sister loves deep, black lashes and this was perfect (it’s also available in brown, cobalt blue and plum). Made with Abyssinia oil “offering
excellent pigment for the most dramatic look,” along with Vitamin E, Provitamin B5 and bamboo extract.

Our friends at KORRES are extending their Friends & Family discount to Beauty Banter readers. Shop www.korresusa.com now through November 13th and receive 30% off! With any purchase over $25 get a deluxe sample of Age-Reversing Oak Night Cream, too. Enter promo code FAMILY at checkout. Shop for yourself or get a jump start on the holidays. xo alex.

THINK PINK – Part Three

By | Uncategorized | 11 Comments

Okay, so I thought this would be my final post on eco-friendly Breast Cancer Awareness Month greatness but there is simply so much out there I’ll be back with a few more posts next week. Today I have a fabulous collection of organizations to share, all benefiting from the philanthropy of companies that we love here at Beauty Banter.

My friend Debbie recently became a rep for Avon (announcing it with the clip from Edward Scissorhands when Avon came a’calling) in part because of their commitment to women’s health. To date they have donated over $585 million to cancer research and education and as part of BCA Month, Avon has created the Breast Cancer Crusade Moisturizing Bar Soap ($4), a grapefruit-scented face and body bar, along with a collection of great items including a reusable tote from Marimekko ($10). 100% (yes, 100%) of net profits benefit the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade and Avon Foundation for Women (all orders are made through Avon reps, so the link above will take you to Debbie’s site to shop. If you already have your own Avon rep, contact them directly to shop for the cause).

Boscia Skin Care is supporting the Love/Avon Army of Women, which seeks to recruit one million healthy women of all ages and ethnicities, breast cancer survivors and those at high-risk, to partner in research that will one day lead to the cure.” For every package of the limited edition Boscia Rose Blotting Linens ($10) 10% will benefits Dr. Love’s foundation to “accelerate our understanding of what causes breast cancer and how to end it.”

KORRES announces they’ve “Gone Pink” to support the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund. While shopping you not only give to research but you save at the same time. All month long shopping at the KORRES site, selected “Pink Products” including body butters, shower gels and makeup will be 20% off AND 10% of proceeds benefit the NBCCF.

They’re also using this wonderful cause to introduce three new value sets called Lip Kits for the Cure. Available in Radiant Red, Perfect Pink and Naturally Nude, they retail for $19.50 but contain between $48 and $54 worth of KORRES Color lipsticks, liners and glosses. 10% of proceeds go to the NBCCF. As will 10% of the price of pink-ribboned giftwrap if you decide to pick up presents while you’re there.

KORRES GIVEAWAY: through October 14th get a free Quince 50ml body butter for every purchase of $25 or more.

Sephora has created several limited edition items for the month of October to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. $1 from the sale of each paraben free Super Shimmer Lip Gloss in Forever Pink and BCA Pink Eyelash Curler ($16) benefit the BCRF. The BCA Refillable Powder Brush ($21) is a retractable, natural hair brush perfect for filling with your favorite mineral makeup or loose powder. $2 from the sale of each brush goes to the BCRF. Available online and in stores.

Website Beauty.com has created a unique month-long promo to benefit Cancer and Careers, which offers support and resources to women with cancer in the workforce. Over thirty brands have chosen items to benefit the CAC, including , , , , and . Check out the Beauty.com CAC link here for the whole list of products.

If you’re not sure what you want but know you’ll hit the makeup counter soon, check out Bloomingdale’s Little Pink Gift Cards (they’re redeemable as gift cards in any part of the store). Designed by New Yorker illustrator and Cancer Vixen author Marissa Acocello Marchetto, the gift cards come in any denomination from $10 to $10,000. 10% of the card’s value goes to the BCRF, and if you spend more than the card’s value when you redeem it, 10% of any overage will also be donated. Little Pink Gift Cards are available through the end of the year at stores and online.

CONTEST FOR THE CAUSE: Bloomingdales Little Pink Bag Sweepstakes is giving away ten Little Pink Bloomies Bags with over $800 in beauty products from Bobbi Brown, Clinique, DKNY, Donna Karan, Estée Lauder, Jo Malone, Lab Series, La Mer and Prescriptives. And for every new email subscriber who enters, they’ll donate a $1 to the BCRF. Good luck!

Have a great weekend! xo alex.

A few of my favorite things… Lippies

By | favorites | 6 Comments

What’s more alluring than a nice pair of luscious lips?

Uh.. nothing?

Well, maybe the lippies that make those lips so luscious. I’m obsessed with the pucker for fall.

Here are a few of my current favorite…. lippies!

– It’s an anomaly. Seriously, part gloss, part stain (not sure if it is actually a stain but the color stays on for so long it very well should be), all plump. My lips look more than massive, they look magically enlarged. Plumped rose and plumped tawny (pictured) are by far my favorite, must-have fall nudes. The wand is an added bonus. Exactly like Lancome’s wand, the sponge is large and a bit flattened for precise paint-on application. Score! $9.99

Korres Lip Butter – Jasmine is my favorite – extra moisturizing, mega shine in a sheer seashell wash. It’s definitely more of a chapstick (sans the stick) than a lippy (reminds me of Labello but in a soft form). The lip butter is the perfect go-to balm for day as it literally only adds a hint of hue. I like it for night layered ontop of a stain for a bit more color with shine and hydration (so lips don’t look chaffed). BONUS: Can also be used as a cheek tint! Wild Rose is a lovely deep red sheen, great for faux-blushing. $9.00

Givenchy Gloss Interdit Ultra-Shiny Color Plumping Effect – a little bling never hurt a pout. This lippy is full of color, plump, shine and shimmer. In fact, the bristled wand is so precise that it’s truly like painting the pout. And the color — more than a wash but less than a lipstick — lasts surprisingly long for a gloss. The plump is similiar to the L’oreal Infallible Plumpers with extra sparkle. Favorite hue is #13, Delectable Brown, a warm golden beige. $24.50 (Sephora exclusive).

Clinique Vitamic C Lip Smoothie – Vitamins and antioxidants + a hint of color? Fabulous! As always, Clinique delivers an amazing lippy in gorgeous sheer hues. It moisturizes, protects and shines. Nude-tricious, a gorgeous beigey-nude hue and Fig-a-licious (pictured), a barely-there mauvish-pink, are my picks. I heart the brush-on applicator with actual bristles! $17.50

Cover Girl Outlast Lipstain – It’s like a magic marker… actually, it’s a pen that stains lips for the ENTIRE day — through breakfast, lunch, dinner and a few kisses in between. Application is as easy as writing your name. Color 400 (pictured) is my favorite. It’s so universally appealing — a raspberry meets watermelon pink — that the fairest of skins to the darkest tones will look fab in said hue. My only gripe is that the applicator tip has a tendency to try out rather rapidly. $7.49

What’s your current favorite lippy?

Some days sharing one great new find just doesn’t seem like enough. And with the number of wonderful products hitting the eco-beauty shelves, it’s hard to decide which ones to share first. So, why not share two in one post?

In my ongoing quest to replace the dozens of paraben-filled lipsticks and glosses I’ve recycled, I have found the perfect replacement for my old standby gloss in KORRES #33 NUDE. They describe it as a “sheer, pinky beige” and I call it “perfect.” In the tube it is deceivingly dark, once applied it’s shiny and semi-sheer with just a hint of color. The KORRES Cherry Oil Lip Gloss collection includes over a dozen different shades from pale pinks to deeper red and plum. Formulated without parabens, sulfates, petro-chemicals or GMOs, KORRES uses cherry oil for moisture and shine (and a great natural scent), jojoba oil to smooth fine lines and hydrate, and Vitamins C and E to protect and repair skin damage.

I highly recommend starting with the Cherry Oil Natural Lip Gloss Trio, a set of fabulous neutrals (including #33) at a great price. Or the Love Your Lips set which includes three glosses and pomegranate lip butter. Don’t forget that all Beauty Banter readers get 30% off purchases at the Korres website through September 15th with promo code BANTER. Check out the new Korres site here.

Summer may be coming to an end, but here in Los Angeles, it’s bare legs year-round. That is why I am thrilled to find that Victoria’s Secret PINK has launched a new beauty line that is 100% vegan, free of parabens, mineral oil and sulfites. I wasn’t sure what to expect as few mainstream retailers have jumped on the organic trend. After trying the Nourishing Shave Cream, all I can say is I am impressed. Big brand shave creams and gels made to soothe often contain parabens, petro-chemicals and formaldehyde…not exactly gentle. PINK shave cream is made with shea and cocoa butters to nourish skin and antioxidants like grapeseed oil to protect. Derm tested and packaged in post-consumer recycled materials, I love this inside and out (and I’ll be writing more on this line in weeks to come). As the tubes and jars proclaim, “Think green. Live pink!” Pick up the shave cream in Victoria’s Secret Beauty stores or online. xo alex.
