Bathing Beauty: Christina Zilber

By | bathing beauties | 6 Comments

Christina Zilber is the founder and creator of one of my absolute favorite cosmetic lines, Jouer. Her mother, a fashion model of the iconic era of the sixties, taught Christina that makeup should be classic and effortless, enhancing a woman’s natural beauty, never overpowering it. This is the philosophy behind Jouer, a small color line that is adored by makeup artists and celebrities alike.

The unique element to the Jouer range is that the packaging is designed to allow you to form your own “palettes” with the products (they “snap” and “slide” together). So, if you’re a girl who loves shadow but can’t stand blush, you can create a palette of all eye shadows, of your choosing. And the entire line consists of colors that are actually wearable. If you mix just about any shadow with a tint and a lip gloss, it’ll go together — and look fantastic. In this beauty writer’s perspective, Christina is a makeup genius.

We asked the former model to share her beauty routine. Here’s how a “makeup stylist” plays around:

What are your top 5, can’t live without products?
1. Jouer’s Luminizing Moisture Tint in Golden – the perfect lightweight foundation and moisturizer AND sunscreen in one. And, it makes my skin look as close to perfect as it’s going to get.
2. Jouer’s Lip and Cheek Tint in Petal – I apply this pretty pink cheek tint with a powder brush and always look healthy and refreshed.
3. Japonesque travel eyelash curler – My secret weapon for looking wide awake and well rested. This lash curler is small enough to fit in my makeup bag and doesn’t look like an ancient torture device.
4. Aveeno Daily Moisture Lotion – I use this body lotion as a hand lotion, it’s thick enough to combat dry hands from lots of hand washing yet lightweight and not greasy.
5. Jouer’s Glisten lip gloss – I am in love with my new Spring lip gloss color, a sheer nude with subtle sparkles.

2. What is your all time favorite product?
My LaRoche-Posay Anthelios Sunscreen from France in SPF 55.

What is your favorite hair product?
I am obsessed with Nexxus Biotin Shampoo! It keeps my hair full and growing! And, as an added benefit, without being drying, I can go a few extra days between shampooing.

What product do you buy in bulk?
Jouer’s Lip Enhancer – I have one next to my bed, one in my car, one in my makeup bag – a super hydrating lip balm with vitamins C, E, and A as well as Jojoba seed oil. It’s the one product I don’t go a day (or night) without using.

You moisturize your face with…
I don’t believe in moisturizers. I haven’t used one since I started the Obagi system and haven’t needed one. The theory being moisturizers weaken your skin. My skin has never looked better.

Favorite Body Product?
I love mixing a body butter with a body oil for extra emolliency, so I created both for Jouer in the most sumptuous scent of Jasmine, Gardenia and Honeysuckle.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
To cover dark circles under your eyes, use a peach colored concealer or brightener and dab it just on the line of the shadow. Don’t sweep across under the eye or you’ll look like a raccoon.

Beauty icon you admire?
Audrey Hepburn because she didn’t try to fit in with the beauty standard of the day of large breasts and bleached hair. She was petite and wide eyed and effortless. And, as a true beauty icon, she was beautiful inside and out – choosing to spend her time helping the needy children of the world through UNICEF.

Trend Forecasting: The Hazel Eye

By | celebrity looks | No Comments

I’m feeling slightly underwhelmed by the looks of this week so I thought I’d pull out a vintage picture of the eternally stunning Kate Beckinsale: a definite beauty icon for yours truly.

Pictured here at the 13th Annual Hollywood Film Festival Awards Gala Ceremony at The Beverly Hilton Hotel, Kate rocks it with teased half-up coif, seductress, glam eyes, a glossy nude pout and a golden bare shoulder.

A trend we’re bound to see as spring progresses is the hazel smokey eye, less obstructive than the signature black smokey eye yet more interesting than a simple brown lid. Spring will bring more gilded lids as well so you’ll see a lot of golds in the mix.

To achieve the hazel eye, try using alternate shades of hazelnut and chestnut to create a sparse smoke effect. Line upper and lower lashes with a brown pencil as opposed to black, and paint lashes with brown mascara to take the edge off. Make sure to smudge darker brown hue towards far corners of eye and below lower lash line.

Color to Try: Jouer’s Chestnut Eyeshadow.

Jouer Summer + Expert Tips

By | Uncategorized | 5 Comments

Jouer is one of my favorite color lines (and vastly underrated). Their summer collection is incredible – coral and browns for the eyes, shimmering nudes and golds for the lips. I’m not a big lipstick wearer – I actually prefer gloss on the daily – but I am obsessed with Kiki (pictured), a shimmering goldish pink lippy that actually moisturizes while adding a sparkling splash of color.

I asked Julie Morgan, Makeup Artist for Giada De Laurentiis and Ricki Lake, how to create the perfect summer Jouer face.

Pay attention, ladies, Julie is spilling her expert secrets and product must-haves exclusively for Beauty Banter:

Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint is lightweight, SPF 20. Hypoallergenic, Oil-free, Water resistent (nicer way of saying sweat-proof!) perfect for summer! It offers a beautiful luminous finish to the complexion. I also double up the Luminizing Moisture Tint as an under eye brightener.

Jouer Matte Touch is a great product to use if you get a little too much sun. It serves as an alternative to blotting paper, this mattifier can help balance the skin.

Jouer Blush in Blossom offers a natural glow and looks absolutely beautiful with a little tan. To get that “pop” of color, try Jouer Blush in Peony. It looks bright, but is very sheer when applied to apples of the cheeks. All of the Jouer Powder Blushes are oil-free and loaded with antioxidants to help protect the skin. So they are great for the summer months.

Jouer’s new Suntan Bronzer is matte and warms up the skin, giving a natural bronzed effect. Dust all over face or use on forehead, cheeks and decollote, where sun would naturally hit.

I love the summer shades of soft pinks and peaches, which makes me think of the delicious sorbets of the season. Try Jouer’s powder eyeshadows in Peach, Soufflé or Pink Champagne. Apply soft shade all over lid. For a little deeper color, add an accent of Amaretto Powder Eyeshadow, a shimmering deep plum shade, which reminds me of a Hamptons’ vineyard. The beautiful bronze of Amaretto catches light and
brightens any eye.

Noisette Lip Definer paired with Julie Lipstick. For that extra pop during the summer, layer on Mimosa Lip gloss on top. The combination is beautiful!

Jouer Lip Enhancer, loaded with vitamins and botanicals which keep lips moisturized, supple and soft, is a true summer essential!

Jouer Relaunch

By | Uncategorized | 6 Comments

I am so excited about this color line. For a couple of years now, I’ve heard loud whispers about the magic of Jouer Cosmetics from makeup artists friends, models and actresses alike (remember Troy Jensen recommended the white highlighter as part of the “white eye done right” post…). Seriously, this line has an industry cult following…. and I finally understand why!

Jouer started in 2004 as the beauty-child of Christina Zilber. It’s a customized color line with compacts that connect together to form your own personalized palettes. With a new package design (deep chocolate casing – compacts still connect) and a relaunch (August), Jouer is back – expanded range of colors and better then ever!

It’s a full line ranging from lip glosses and pencils to blushes and eye shadows (both cream and powder), but the creme de la creme is really the multi-purpose highlighters! Offered in 3 colors – camellia (pearly white), tiare (shimmering gold) and champagne (shimmering golden champagne), the highlighters are lightweight, cream, work on all skin tones, and instantly illuminate cheekbones, eyes, brow bone, chest – anywhere and everywhere you want a little extra pop! I’ve tried all 3 and I love them equally. If I was forced to either choose one or have my first born taken from me, I’d choose camellia… and champagne! I can’t just choose one because they look SO good blended together (good thing I don’t have kids)!

Other products that I love:

The powder eye shadow (16 total) in pistachio – yep, you guessed it – an incredible shimmery forest green color with specks of gold. It looks SO gorgeous on the eyes (and stays on all night long – even after dancing to Justin Timberlake jams for hours on end).

I’m also a fan of the glosses (15 in total) – not too shiny, definitely not gooey, and jam packed with vitamins, shea butter, jojoba oil and pomegranate seed oil to soothe and moisturize. All of the colors are so brilliant – really wearable, sexy shades. But I adore shell – a shimmery, barely-there peach that goes perfectly with a dark eye.

Alas, a wearable, beautiful, non-trendy color line with stunning basic hues for all skin tones! And, to think, just in time for Fall….
