How-To: The Perfect Hollywood Holiday Look

By | celebrity looks | One Comment

We all want to look our best come Holiday season – if not for Santa Clause, than most definitely for the party circuit. So, what is the perfect holiday look? There are infamous looks. We’ve gone through a good 8 different looks on this site alone. The decision factor can be mildly overwhelming. Come on, we are knee-deep in hottie-tottie holiday outfit options!

So, we decided to ask the awesome Beau Nelson, celebrity makeup artist for the likes of Blake Lively, Sienna Miller and Kim Cattrall, to share in his perfect Hollywood Holiday look. After all, Hollywood is the fairest land of them all (wink, wink) – even if it doesn’t snow or get cold enough to rock a parka.

Beau Nelson gives us an exclusive step-by-step on how to achieve a modern take on the red lips and shimmery eyes of Holidays past. This look is about showing off that inner glow (with the help of a great blush and a rose lippy). Think pretty-in-pink meets metallic cat-eye.

The Look: Katherine McPhee at the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony (how suiting!)

“A lot of people think about shimmery eyeshadows and red lips or very blushy faces for Holiday,” notes Beau. “Instead, try a more modern approach by using a sophisticated micro-glitter product on the eyes and pair that with creamy looking skin with subtle shimmer on the cheekbones. Keep lips matte in a natural rosey shade. I created a similar look for Katherine McPhee at the Rockefeller Center Tree lighting ceremony.”

“I started by applying Shu Uemura Nobara stick foundation with the Urban Decay Good Karma Blush Brush in small circular motions, buffing the product into the skin wherever needed, and then used Kett Creme Fix makeup as concealer in spots that needed additional coverage.

On cheeks, I contoured using MAC Pro Painstick in Deep Brown on a soft brush and then applied Tom Ford Love Lust blush to the apples of the cheeks.

I filled in brows using in brunette and applied Anastasia clear brow gel to keep them in place.

On lips, I used Joe Fresh Matte Lipstick in Rose.

On eyes, I used Chanel Illusion D’ombre in Fantasme all over the lid (this can be used over any eyeshadow or on bare lids to add sparkle to any look). NARS Blondie Eyeshadow was blended into the crease for a bit of depth and on the under lashline as well. I then applied Covergirl LineExact Liquid Liner in Black to the lash line starting very thin at the inner corner and gradually thickening towards the outer eye, ending in a flick at the end. I also applied Covergirl Lashblast Mascara in Black.”

Girl Crush: Jessica Alba

By | celebrity looks | 3 Comments

This is a double girl crush: Love Jessica Alba and love Jen Atkin… put them together and it’s a full blown love affair – which is exactly how I felt when I first saw this picture of Jessica from An Evening With Ralph Lauren hosted by the one and only, Ms. Oprah Winfrey.

It’s no secret that Jessica Alba is super hot. It’s also no secret that Jen Atkin is one of my favorite hair stylist on earth. So, obvs I love love love this hair! The perfect updo with class sans the stuffiness. Tres glam.

Here’s how to get the look:

Inspiration: A Chinese-inspired, classy updo with an Asian twist

The Look: Prep the hair by applying a wave spray, such as Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, throughout the

hair to give it volume and texture. Blow dry the hair all the way through using a round brush. When the hair is fully
dry, use a 1 inch curling iron create loose thick curls throughout the hair to infuse body. Separate the bang section and
create a strong part to one side, putting the rest of the hair in a low ponytail and secure with a bungee band. On the
ends of the hair, apply KeSARI Indian Oil Hair Serum to make the hair glossy and smooth. To create the up do, take
large sections of the hair and twist them up. Secure each twist using French hair pins. To finish off the look, apply a
small amount the KeSARI Indian Oil Hair Serum into the bangs and on the sides of the hair to maximize shine.

Jen’s Thoughts: “The KeSARI oil is perfect for red carpet events because it does an excellent job of keeping the hair healthy
and shiny, especially when cameras hit it!”

Real Life Look: Wear an updo to a black tie event, dinner party or wedding.

Girl Crush: Kat Dennings from ‘2 Broke Girls’

By | celebrity looks | 2 Comments

With a super cool new TV show (2 Broke Girls‘ by the super cool Whitney Cummings and even cooler Michael Patrick King – yep, of  Sex and the City fame) and a super cool and fresh look, Kat Dennings is taking girlie-coolness to an entirely new level.

Okay. I promise not to say cool again for the remainder of this post. (I think I ran up my cool quota).

At 26 (ish), she’s already had roles in movies like The House Bunny and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Play List, and a guest spot on ER, but with 2 Broke Girls, we’re banking on Kat becoming a full blown star (and style icon). She’s so awesome looking (I really wanted to use c**l, but I refrained) with her plump lips, bedroom blue eyes, dark hair and pale skin – she reminds me of a really hip Vampire mixed with a bit of Elvira. I’m thinking she’s on her way to becoming the poster child for the young, hip and unconventionally pretty (which is another reason that I’m crushing on her!).

Here are two looks from Kat – one is with understated makeup, the other is a dramatic, metallic phenom.

Get the Look: Understated

This is all about a matte lip and thick eye liner. A little rosy blush on the cheeks and you’re good to go.

Products to Try: Shiseido’s Perfect Rouge Glowing Matte in Wink, a deep beige/ light brown but still natural. CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Liner in Black – the best and most affordable liquid liner that makes lining your lids easy breazey. Creates quite the cat eye, too. For the cheeks, try Smashbox Blush Rush in Flush, a petal pink/ dusty rose hue. Apply sparingly for the slightest, flirty flush.

Get The Look: Metallic Goddess

How fab is this face?! Metallicy bronzes for the eyes complimented by a metallic, shimmering brick red, slightly glossy lip. It’s so tastefully downtown-dramatic. Bold metallic against bold metallic – love, love, love it; inspiring! (May even wear a similar look tonight)!

Products to Try: For the eyes, go with Bobbi Brown’s Bronze Tortoiseshell Eye Palette, 8 shimmering hues ranging from gold to copper to bronze. Mix them up to create an overextended gilded smoky eye. As for lips, try Kat Von D Foiled Love Lipstick in Beranice, a metallic poppy red. To get the deeper brick shade, mix with Illamasqua Lipstick in Encounter, a matte brick red.

Trend: The Top Knot

By | trends | 8 Comments

Last fall, it was all about the bun’s resurgence, this season it’s all about the top knot. “It’s a younger, modern version of a chignon and much easier to duplicate,” says Gilda, celebrity stylist at the Pierre Michel Salon in NYC. Granted, some version of the top knot is present every season, but this fall, it’s really come out as the must-wear style. I see at least a half a dozen fashionista’s a night wearing this trend. Last night at Indochine (how delicious is that tofu dish?!), there were 3 girls –  just in the front of the restaurant – with the top knot!

The trick: it’s all about showing off the actual knot. The more relaxed the knot, the chicer it is.

The top knot is fun and contemporary and takes NO time to achieve. It’s also great for showing off a pretty face of makeup or getting hair off of your neck (to blind everyone with your ear and neck bling, perhaps?). And it looks so damn cool!

You can wear it in the middle of your head, a bit to the side, slicked back, a little messy, as long as there is a knot! The finer details are up to you. P.S. For the vertically challenged lady, this style will actual make you (appear) taller (because the know adds some major height)! Who couldn’t use a few inches in the right direction?

Celebs like Erin Wasson, Jessica Hart, and Mandy Moore have all been spotted with the knot. Jessica Hart really wears it well. She’s always out and about in NYC with her hair all knotted up, which was actually my inspiration for this post….

Gilda explains how you can easily get this look:

1 – Take 2 hands and make a high ponytail. The height is key. Do NOT secure with a rubber band or you’ll have trouble creating the knot.

2 – Twist it around your finger to make it look like a rope.

3 – Twist the “roped” hair clockwise like you are twisting to make a bun.

4 – Tuck the bottom in and pull it through the middle of the bun for the knotted look.

5 – Let pieces fall as desired or slick back falling front hairs with a pomaide or hairspray.

TIP: For a night out of dancing, secure with a few sporadic bobby pins.

Will you be wearing the knot?

Dior’s New Velvet Eyes Eyeliner PATCHES

By | makeup | One Comment

Now, this is the product launch of the season! I am so excited to try out Dior’s new adhesive eyeliner, I feel like a little girl waiting for Santa at Christmas. An eyeliner patch so that I never have to paint my eyes in that ridiculously straight line again?! Praise the Lord!!!

Last night, Harley Viera Newton – Dior Beauty Ambassador – rocked the new Velvet Eyes Eyeliner Patches for Fashion’s Night Out. I’m loving her entire downtown-hipster-chic look. Major focal point on the eyes (faux diamond rhinestones and all!) with a flawless complexion and a nicely stained and subdued red lip. Perfection!

Here’s how you can get the look:

INSPIRATION: “I wanted to combine Harley’s cool, downtown vibe with a natural, youthful look. The Velvet Eyes eyeliner patches were obviously the focus, so I started by dusting the lid of the eye with a light shade from the new 3-Couleurs Eyeshadow palette in Smoky Nude and Diorshow Blackout mascara. Then I finished with a light stain of red on the lips.” — Celebrity Makeup Artist, Gina Daddona

Eyes: NEW Dior Velvet Eyes, Dior 3-Couleurs Eyeshadow in Smoky Nude, Diorshow Blackout Mascara
Lips: Rouge Dior Lipcolor in Zinnia Red #743
Cheeks: Diorblush in English Rose
Skin: Diorskin Airflash Spray Foundation #400, Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen

I’ll need to try Velvet Eyes myself to see if it’s as effortless and remarkable as it appears to be. If so, this may just change the face of eyeliner forever!!!

Velvet Eyes is available at Sephora.com (exclusive).

GIRL CRUSH: Olivia Wilde

By | celebrity looks | 5 Comments

Olivia Wilde is on a European vacation – well, maybe not a vaca, more like a press tour for the premiere of her new film, Cowboys & Aliens with Harrison Ford and that womanizer, Daniel Craig, and she’s looking quite fab. She’s always looked great, but post-divorce, Olivia is really stepping up her game: with the boys, the beauty and the fashion!

First there was Locaron, Switzerland with hair in a modern chignon and face flawless with beige and nude hues. Definitely the most conservative of the three looks from Europe.

Next, there was Berlin, Germany and that infamous cinched ponytail that celebrity hair stylist David Babaii for Couture Colour said was inspired by “the columns and iron work seen in the city streets.” Magic! Although, I don’t necessarily die over her thick bangs. I do, however, die over the contemporary twist on the classic pony and the cat-eyed liner.

But my fave look of the Euro tour was definitely London. Olivia pulled out all the stops. The red lips. The cat-eyed winged liner. The blushed cheeks. The slightly wavy long strands, pulled back with a head band and heightened at the crown for extra flirt-appeal. And then that perfect ombre chestnut-colored hair with lightened tips. Red carpet PERFECTION!

To Get The Hair, here’s how Olivia’s stylist did the ‘do:

“David [Babaii] began this red carpet look by applying Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment (derived from the Pequi fruit, known for centuries as the beauty secret of the Amazon Rainforest) to Olivia’s wet hair. David then blow-dried hair straight while simultaneously sweeping it back. Once hair was dry, he back combed the hair at the crown of Olivia’s head to give the elevated bump. David secured the hair back with two hair elastics, giving the look a playful, flirtatious feel. To finish off the look, David used Revoln’s Perfect Heat Ceramic Nano Curling Iron at the ends of the hair to give it a soft curl and applied an additional bit of the Pequi Oil Treatment for added shine.”

Girl Crush: Rosie Huntington Whiteley

By | celebrity looks | 2 Comments

I’m a girl that can appreciate another girl’s beauty. My guy friends find this quality really “cool” as I’m constantly on the hunt for hot chicks to set them up with. While I’ll be the first to tell you that beauty is SO MUCH MORE than exterior, there is something to be said for first impressions – what first catches your eye.

I can’t think of anyone who has caught my eye like model/ actress Rosie Huntington Whiteley in quite some time (perhaps Sienna Miller days? I have a crazy girl crush on Sienna!). I find her 10 times sexier than Megan Fox, more stunning than half of the super models out there – with the curves to match – and she’s got such an interesting face, with the wide-set blue eyes, gorgeous skin and sexy pout.

A few other girls who I’m loving these days are Natasha Poly (I did an Inspiration post on her – click here for a recap), actress Isabel Lucas, and redheaded beauty Cintia Dicker (I’ll be writing more in depth about both in the coming weeks).

But this post is dedicated to my current girl crush – Rosie – and her current night out on the town (below) – the Moscow premiere for Transformers 3. WOW, did she look smashing, as per usual.

Celebrity makeup artist Monika Blunder was on hand to makeover the actress…. here, she dishes on how to recreate the sex goddess look:

“Rosie’s dress was a Fall 2011 Gucci gown, honestly I thought it was so breathtakingly sexy and glamorous. All I wanted was a little stain on her lips and very minimal makeup.”

“This look was all about her lips and the rest was super minimal… I first applied CHANEL Pro Lumiere Professional Finish Makeup in Beige all over. I wanted her skin to have a very finished and flawless look to it.

I wanted her eyes to be very minimal, all I used was a  few coats of NARS Larger Than Life Mascara, and a few individual lashes. I also applied a few coats on the bottom lashes, using Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara, the little brush is great to reach all the little bottom lashes.  On her cheeks I used Smashbox Blush Rush in Chiffon, and a bronzer by Mark cosmetics.  Finally, on her lips I used CHANEL Rouge Allure Satin Lip Colour in Imagination. Instead of using a lip brush, I transferred the lipstick on my ring finger and then dabbed the color into the pout, giving the lips a much more natural look.”

GIRL CRUSH: Rachel McAdams

By | celebrity looks | 3 Comments

I ADORE Rachel McAdams. I mean, how could you not? From Mean Girls to The Notebook (swoon) to every role she’s played since, Rachel has stolen the screen with her beautiful looks and free spirit!

While in Cannes promoting her upcoming film projects, Rachel’s been seen in a variety of different dresses – and faces. From more modern lips and hair to a throwback to Old Hollywood glamour, her sister and makeup artist Kayleen McAdams has been on hand to work her magic.

My favorite look thus far: The glamour girl from Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris Premiere. Rachel looks like a true movie star with that gorgeous, smoky eye and I’m loving a little Veronica Lake exaggerated side-part with a fluffy curl….

“For the Midnight in Paris premiere, the hair was 40’s inspired and was an inspiration for the makeup in that I wanted to go the opposite in style from the hair. Rachel’s hair is a gorgeous shade of blonde right now so I chose to do a bronzy sun kissed surfer girl glow. This look was all about warm, healthy looking skin and a fresh glow to go against the strong hair and the strong structure of the dress.” – Kayleen McAdams

Get the Look:

“Again I used Cle de Peau Cream Foundation, Amazing Concealer, and MAC Pressed Powder for a flawless complexion.  This time we wanted to go with a more dramatic eye, and keep the lips natural.  I lined her eyes with NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Skorpios, a shimmery iridescent copper shade.  I then used the burgundy shade from the CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Spices all over the lid, and applied two coats of CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara in Very Black. On the apples of her cheeks, I used NARS Blush in Lustre, a sheer golden apricot shade, and for a sun kissed bronzy look, I used Nuxe Cream Bronzer.  To finish the look and create a soft shimmer, I used a light dusting of Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Powder in Candlelight.  Finally, on her lips I used NARS Lip Gloss in Belize, a light gloss with just a tiny bit of gold shimmer.” – Kayleen McAdams

Girl Crush: Gisele

By | celebrity looks, hair | 8 Comments

In my opinion, Gisele is one of the hottest chicks on the planet, period. I was at a party the other night (actually, it was hair mastermind – Gisele’s mane man, Harry Josh’s Spring Fling) and there stood Gisele and her hubby, the equally hot Tom Brady and, I swear, my eyes never veered from Gisele. She is that radiant and magnetic in person.

I did, however, mention, in passing, to Tom Brady that he could possibly use a hair cut. It’s true! His hair is getting a bit long and unruly and I felt I owed it to him to be honest – after all, I kinda know what I’m talking about when it comes to beauty. And if I was throwing a football all crazy, I’d hope he’d impart the same honesty on me.

Gisele and Tom at the Met Ball

Anyway, back to the beautiful Gisele.

Harry Josh, Gisele’s go-to stylist, dishes on her Met Ball ‘do. Styles past:  She’s done the pony (who could forget that), the beach-chic curl, the tightly wound chignon, and now it’s some Old Hollywood Glam with a heavy side part and a simple wave.

twitpic by Gisele – dress Alexander McQueen who was being honored at the fete

Although Giselle’s hair is already luminous and healthy, Josh began with John Frieda Full Repair Perfect Ends Sheer Mist before blow drying to protect her tresses from the heat and seal the cuticles for flawlessly shiny waves.

Josh started by blow drying Gisele’s hair, curling each piece carefully and setting it to keep the shape. The curls were then brushed out to create a soft and sleek wave throughout. John Frieda Full Repair Touch-Up Flyaway Tamer was used which weightlessly smoothes flyaways for a polished red carpet look.

“I wanted to go for a sleek, sophisticated style for Gisele this year. The Met Ball is fashions biggest night and I thought this was the perfect look to complement the evening. The John Frieda Touch-Up Flyaway Tamer will keep her photographer ready all night,” says Harry.

Harry is a genius when it comes to hair and he’s quite a rock star when it comes to throwing parties, too. He may just be my favorite new hair dude! And, of course, he handles the locks of Gisele… what’s not to like?

Girl Crush: Anna Paquin

By | celebrity looks | 6 Comments

As if we don’t want to see Scream 4 badly enough… the red carpet for the premiere was smoking with Hollywood’s sexiest ladies!

I thought that everyone put on their A-game but my favorite was definitely Anna Paquin. Granted, I may be a bit biased as I am a MASSIVE fan of True Blood. Regardless, she looked incredible. From the brown smoky eye, to the pink-stained Spring lip, to the tan skin — and that hair! A perfectly messy chignon to give her a fun and flirty sophistication without being too serious or old-fashioned.

Celebrity hair stylist Giannandrea created the mane look and here’s what he had to say:

“My inspiration for Anna’s hair at the Scream 4 premiere was Grace Kelly rock chic.  It was quite simple, but she felt very cool and beautiful.”

“I started by applying Kerastase Volume Active Mousse to wet hair, all over the head, roots and length. I then dried the whole head with just warm air – no brushing – just using my hands from side to side, back and forth, down and up all around, in order to keep a natural feel and build volume at the roots. Next I brushed the hair with a Mason Pearson brush and used Klorane Dry Shampoo Powder all over just to add some dry texture.

I began to pull the hair back gently on the side and very soft at the top as I wanted it to look natural in a way that wasn’t too constructed, almost as if she did it herself. I then began to twist the hair in the back into a soft messy bun.  I use straight pins and twist each pin on to the sides, back and all around the head in order to create a clean visual texture. A bit of messiness and a few flyways are ok. I finished the look with Framesi Hair Spray.”

Doesn’t sound too difficult… perhaps a new ‘do for Saturday night?
