Fall 2013: Cargo Cosmetics

By | makeup | 9 Comments

Collection: Cargo Cosmetics Fall 2013

Products Used:
Look 1 –
Essential Lip Color in Bordeaux $22 (favorite)
Eye Shadow in Pasadena
Eye Shadow in Shanghai
Look 2 –
Essential Lip Color in Punta Cana $22
Eye Shadow in Pasadena
Eye Shadow in Shanghai
Eye Shadow in Moreton Bay (favorite)

How To: I did two different looks with this collection. For the first look, I was going for a light wash of color and a dark lip. I applied Pasadena eyeshadow, a pinky-mauve, all over the lid and layered it with Shanghai, a shimmery violet, to give a bit more color and definition. I used Bordeaux lipstick, a wine shade to complete the look.

The second look was a violet smokey eye and bold lip. Staying with the shadows I used on the first look, I added Moreton Bay, a deep purple, to the crease and lower lash line. For lips I switched out the berry lip for a bold fuchsia, using Punta Cana.

Did You Know: Purple can be considered a neutral(ish) hue when it comes to eye makeup. It looks good on almost all skin tones and eye colors. Make sure to stick with purple shades that have a bit of a deeper undertone, as opposed to bright, to create a wearable violet eye.

Also, don’t be afraid to match a dark eye with a bright lip… it’s one of fall’s most alluring beauty trends!

*Unless otherwise noted, I used, Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer in 1 on face to even out the skin tone (coverage is in between a concealer and a foundation), Lancôme Definicils Waterproof Mascara in Black, and RMS Living Luminizer to highlight brow and cheek bones.

Fall 2013: Laura Mercier Dark Spell Collection

By | makeup | 3 Comments

Collection: Laura Mercier Dark Spell Fall 2013

Products Used:
Baked Eye Colour – Wet/ Dry in Magical $22
Satin Matte Eye Colour in Dark Spirit $24
Kohl Liner Extreme (*favorite*) $24
Lip Plumper in Charmed $30

How To: I created the classic smoky eye, nude lip look which is a constant fall staple. I started with the eyes, using Magical, a shimmery white shadow as a base, from lash line to brow bone. I mixed a dab of water into the shadow to create a pasty gunmetal shade, and applied that on the lid. I used the Dark Spirit, a matte black shadow in the crease and on the lower lash line, and created a kohl-lined cat eye with the Kohl Liner Extreme, a highly pigmented black liner that applies with the ease of a Crayola Crayon. Finally, I applied a few coats of Charmed, a peachy nude gloss which gives the look a bit more panache than merely a matte nude lip.

Did You Know: If you add water to the Wet/Dry shadow (I did so with my finger), it’ll turn into a paste-like consistency that will last hours longer. Using the white shadow as a base and to highlight the brow bone, I then wet my finger and mixed it around the black lines on the white shadow to create a shimmery grey shade that would look wonderful on its own, an ode to the gunmetal eye of the season!

You can also skip the shadows and go for a classic cat eye with the Kohl Liner Extreme (my favorite product in this collection). It applies effortlessly and smudges rather easily.

Fall Collection: Bobbi Brown Marrakesh Chic Collection

By | makeup | 4 Comments

For most of the fall collection, we’re going to have a fun way of showing you how wearable or unwearable the shades truly are. But, for this specific collection, we didn’t have the time to play around with the colors nor did we sample them, so, sadly, we will just be reporting on the actual images and text from the press release. However, on a side note, while we don’t personally wear much Bobbi Brown, the colors look very wearable. We’ll have to test the pigments and staying power to see if we are adoring the line…

Alas, the real reason I’m reporting on the Fall 2011 Bobbi Brown collection is because the inspiration for the colors come from Morocco, and, (in case you didn’t know) I’m half Moroccan!

Bobbi says that the collection was inspired by a trip to Morocco, “especially the incredibly rich, earthy colors that dominated the cityscapes and the rural vistas.” On the eyeshadow, she notes: “I’ve wanted to develop a powder to cream hybrid eye shadow for a long time now. The shades in this collection are deeply hued just like the saturated purple, brown and red tones that I saw throughout my journey in Morocco…”

And, here’s the entire fall collection, Marrakesh Chic:

Rich Color Eyeshadow, $24
Coffee Bean, Desert Lily, Pink Silk, Rich Kashmir, Rich Slate, Royale, Sand Dune, Wine.

Rich Lip Color SPF 12, $23
Desert Rose
Metallic Lip Color, $23
Violet Glaze
Creamy Lip Color, $23
Pale Plum
Pink Blossom
Lip Color, $23
Desert Plum

Charlotte Ronson For Sephora

By | makeup | 2 Comments

I am so excited about this latest partnership. My friend and clothing designer, Charlotte Ronson has partnered up with beauty maven Sephora for a very wearable cosmetic line!

Last night was the launch dinner in NYC and we got our very first hands-on look at the products… Let me tell you, they do not disappoint! The 14 sku line includes 4 eye shadow quads, a blush/ bronzer trio, a finishing powder, 6 shades of lipgloss, a body bronzer, and a beach spray for the hair. All of the products are named after Charlotte’s family and close friends (a.k.a. her muses), many of whom we’ve written about on this very site – (click the name to read about the fab lady from Beauty Banter) Eleanor Ylvisaker (lipgloss), my personal girl crush, Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss (luminizer, bronzer, blush trio), Dani Stahl (purple shadow quad), and Tessa Benson (lipgloss)

Early favorites include: The luminizer, bronzer, blush trio (above) – a.k.a. 3 X A Charm; All Eye Need Eye Shadow Palette in Nicole (as in Richie, colors are the perfect range of earth tones – above), A Perfect Kiss Lip Gloss in Annabelle (Charlotte’s hottie little sis, color is a glossy red that is perfect for fall with some mascara and eye liner and flawless skin) and Eleanor (color is a pearlized pink brown that is great for day or compliments a smoky eye for a night look), and definitely the A Perfect Mess Beach Hair (anyone who knows Charlotte is well aware that she has incredibly perfect beach-chic hair year round – finally, she’s bottled it up and selling it! Charlotte says this product is inspired by her mother, Ann Dexter-Jones).

All of the prices are very reasonable (ranging from $14.00 for a lippy to $22.00 for a shadow quad and $28.00 for the blush trio) and, as I mentioned earlier, the line is entirely wearable. While it’s not littered with of-the-moment colors, these are staple hues that will always be on trend. And I like how the range is small enough that you won’t be overwhelmed with choices – there’s something for everyone, but not too much that you won’t be able to decide.

Meanwhile, the pigments give great hue, the glosses are shiny and taste like lemon mint (yum) and the body glow bronzing gel gives a faux tan color that will have you looking like a summer goddess year round!

All products are available September 15 exclusively at Sephora, but you can buy online NOW (just in time for fall) at www.sephora.com.

Happy Shopping!!!

MAC + Cindy Sherman Collaboration

By | makeup | 14 Comments

MAC is known for their out-of-the-box thinking, but they really went above and beyond with their latest collaboration – one with artist/ photographer Cindy Sherman. For those not in the know, Cindy Sherman has become widely successful for injecting herself as the subject of her own photographs. “Through a number of different series of works, Sherman has raised challenging and important questions about the role and representation of women in society, the media and the nature of the creation of art.” source

I’m quite impressed by this latest collaboration, not just because of my respect for Sherman as an artist (although I do have the utmost respect for her), but also because of the melding of two great art forms – makeup and photography (the former actually being recognized as an art form is major).

As always, Sherman models the colors and looks on herself in a series of 3 wildly fun and outrageous portraits. Here’s a first look:

Paris Fashion Week and Chanel Runway Beauty – GET THE LOOK!

By | celebrity looks | One Comment

A TON went down in Paris this past week. Kate Moss made a smoking (legitimate, like with a cigarette) return to the runway at Louis Vuitton, Galliano was fired from Dior and Lady Gaga opened the Thierry Mugler show.  WOW, what a week!

So, despite all the theatrics that occurred, we wanted to touch upon the beauty of one of our favorite fashion houses: Chanel. The faces were epic with a smoldering, metallic grey eye and a kick-ass gun metal nail polish (dying over!).

Peter Philips, Creative Director of CHANEL Make Up, dishes on the CHANEL products used to create the runway beauty looks:

CND’s Fall 2011 Nail Trend Forecast

By | trends | 2 Comments

CND worked on the tips of 22 shows this past New York fashion week. What better people to ask about trends then the ones who create them?

Here, CND’s official Fall Trend Forecast:

“This Fall, manicures are emerging in waves of rich jewel tones, earthy and worn shades, and comfortable colors – as cozy as a boyfriend’s t-shirt,” says CND Co-founder and Style Director, Jan Arnold.

Eccentric, old world charm takes center stage this season with eminent dark jewel toned nails that accessorize bold satin and chiffon, off-kilter tweeds, wild jacquards and sumptuous velvet fabrics. Prince William and Kate Middleton aren’t the only royal marriage in the future – runway manicures unite lavish eggplant purple with decadent gilded gold. For opulent nails, use CND’s limited edition The Look: Fall 2011, comprised of Midnight Sapphire deep cobalt blue crème, Dark Amethyst velvet aubergine crème and Sheer 24K Sparkle gold lamé effect. These brand new polishes were seen on the runway at Sachin & Babi, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Jen Kao and Monique Lhuillier.

Jen Kao

Manicures delve into the past…faded, traditional and textured in soft sandstone washes of color. A literal return to the roots. Nature takes back the urban landscape with earthen shades of muted brown, green and patina peach. Pair this grounded look with rugged leather, sediment shaded woven wear, tough denim and weathered knits. For the inky spectator nails from 3.1 Phillip Lim, use warm opaque Desert Suede and half circles of Midnight Sapphire. To get Monique Lhuillier’s “Shady Lady” manicure, try Silver Chrome topped with Desert Suede, and iced with Dark Amethyst.

Phillip Lim
  Monique Lhuillier

Worn-in clothes evoke softness and worn-out colors, and provide an element of comfort and timelessness. Manicures are faded with muted iridescence blushing in vintage gold, peach, icy blue and green. Worn best with softened sateen sweaters, heirloom jacquards, Victorian buttons and pearls, and smoky sheers. Custom blended minty sage nails were sported at Costello Tagliapietra, and a hazy purple was mixed for Malandrino. For the blushing taupe nails from Jenni Kayne, use Desert Suede, layered with Copper Shimmer Effect, washed out with a coat of semi-sheer Rose Water and topped with Super Matte Top Coat. Achieve waistline-approved toffee brown nails from Isaac Mizrahi using Chocolate Milk mixed with 5 drops of Asphalt.

SENNA FALL/ WINTER 2010: Virtual Vintage

By | Uncategorized | One Comment

Senna is a great little California-based makeup company hidden amongst those giant conglomerates. Founder and makeup artist Eugenia Weston, has created a dazzling display of colors and textures for her Fall/ Winter 2010 collection.

“My inspiration is a confluence of 1930’s designer Adrian and the visionary 3D Avatar. Vintage femininity is powered by adrenaline. Soulful romance is tattooed with decadence. Mannequin skin is sculpted in warm, sanguine nude. Dark, graphic eyes are edged in the deepest green then gently blurred. Lips are passionate and teased with sparkling nude of inked in sumptuous grape.”

“The past inspires the future. The future rewrites the past.”

Deets on the collection, Virtual Vintage:

Blush – Sheer Matte – $18.50
Hue – sheer henna nude

Matte Eye Colors – $16.50
Blend – nude matte skin tone
After Hours – charcoal grape matte
Fixation – golden flecked green
Posh – deep cranberry sparkle

Lip Liner – $17.00
Dusty Rose – neutral browned rose

Lip Lacquer – $19.00
Lush – gold flecked berry

Lipstick – $18.00
Enlighten – sparkled overglow
Chantilly – blooming nude sparkle
Garnet – gold-flecked grape
Valentina – classic red cream

I’m loving the bold, richness to the pigments and the daring way they are using a dark eye and colorful lip. Tres chic!

Nars Introduces Pure Matte

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Just in time for fashion week AND award season, Nars is launching their Pure Matte line of lippies. They were used on Sunday night at the Emmys: Both Kerri Russel and Lea Michele wore Pure Matte on the red carpet.

“A matte lip is very modern, whether nude or deeply pigmented. Try a color close to your skin tone for a universally flattering look. Pair darker hues with a fresh complexion and little makeup. But, always choose a formula that has hydrating ingredients to condition lips.” -François Nars, Founder & Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics

“Over 15 years ago, François Nars created a collection of 12 perfectly edited lipsticks. Nars’ passion for lipstick never wavered. Now comes Pure Matte Lipstick– the newest addition to the NARS lip category. Pure Matte’s luxuriously rich texture glides on effortlessly, without drag, cakiness or resistance. Defying the traditional challenge of long-wearing lipsticks, it won’t dry out lips. Rich in antioxidants, including Vitamin E and Acai Oil, as well as containing Wild Mango Butter, Pure Matte nourishes and conditions lips.”

Volga (Deep Aubergine)
Bangkok (Soft Rose)
Tonkin (Cinnamon Plum)
Terre De Feu (Black Cherry)
Tashkent (Nude Beige)

As summer winds down, fall is winding up! Yesterday, we brought you the Nars fall collection, today, it’s Essie, Fall Into Fashion, 6 moody and brooding shades that are sure to sizzle up any outfit this fall. Straight off the runway, Essie’s newest collection showcases dark velvet textures and metallic embellishments.

“This fall, designers are mixing it up, combining sheer fabric with leather along with lingerie as outer wear in  deep, muted tones and bold color palettes which is very alluring,” explains Essie Weingarten, Founder/President of Essie. “I drew inspiration from the range of elegant, sanguine hues and camouflage tones.”

The hues are the perfect accoutrement to fall’s minimalist color palette. With Velvet Voyuer you can praise your paws with an intense chocolate amethyst or try Sew Psyched, a cashmere soft sage. Personally, I’m loving Limited Addiction, a staple ruby red.

The collection is available starting September from www.essie.com.
