Weekly Must-Have: Dior Addict Lip Glow

By | weekly must-have | No Comments

My lips never seem to catch a break. Even with the humidity, I am constantly applying a moisturizing agent to combat the dryness. Winter imparts a severely dry and cracked situation and summer gives way to a parched and chapped pout. I am forever looking for the perfect lippy – something that hydrates but also gives a bit of natural color.

In an interview I did with Bryn Kenny, former public relations director for Dior Beauty (read her full interview here), she talked about a specific Dior lip balm that combats climate casualties. “Dior Addict Lip Glow is pretty much the opposite of bright lipstick; It’s a natural balm with a bit of color that adjusts to your skin’s chemistry. It creates this perfect flushed pink—like you’ve just been kissed.” Naturally, I picked up a Dior Addict Lip Glow and… well, I must confess, I’m pretty obsessed. This is my go-to summer lippy – a hybrid between a balm and a lipstick. The color varies depending on each person’s body chemistry; it’s in the sheer pink spectrum for all. But the formula, enriched with wild mango and luffa cylindrica, leaves lips hydrated while SPF 10 protects them from further sun dehydration.

I also like that the consistency isn’t glossy. There is a gloss version here, but I try to stay away from glosses in summer heat (the sweaty, sticky, hair-to-mouth situation is a little much to handle). It feels like a soothing balm with a slight scent of vanilla. It applies like a lipstick – no need for dirty fingers to pot to lip action – and takes seconds to unearth its magic glow. Staying with the no makeup / makeup trend of summer, Lip Glow is the perfect daytime balm as the shade is so subtle it pretty much suits any outing – from a dog walk to a BBQ to a board meeting – without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Fall 2012: Dior Beauty’s Golden Jungle Collection

By | makeup | 5 Comments

Collection: Golden Jungle Collection

Products Submitted:
Couture Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Golden Savannah 774 $59
Panther Eyeshadows and Lip Gloss in Golden Browns 002 $70
All-In-One Artistry Palette in Khaki Design 308 $59
Dior Addict Lipstick in Daring 962 $30
Dior Addict Lipstick in Wild 646 $30

Products Used:
Couture Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Golden Savannah 774 $59
Dior Addict Lipstick in Wild 646 $30

How To: This look is about the eye, so I made sure to go big. I started with the middle shadow shade – a shimmery pale gold – and applied as the base, from lash line to brow bone. I used the gold color on the entire lid, followed by the light matte brown in the crease. I applied the dark brown shade to the corners and smudged under the lower lash line for a full eye (not necessarily smoky as I didn’t smoke out the top much). Lastly, I lined the upper lash line with the same dark brown hue by using the applicator that comes in the palette (a great trick that I learned from Megan McIntyre of Refinery 29. I used the sheer beigey-pink Dior Addict Lipstick on my lips as well as the apples of my cheeks, a genius trick that Violette, a Dior makeup artist, taught me while in Paris last year. For some added highlight, I dabbed my finger into the center shadow and applied to brow and cheek bones.

Did You Know: Using a palette really takes the guessing work out of choosing your complimentary shades – but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a dozen different ways to wear the colors. For example, try a daytime eye by nixing the dark brown hue all together. Or work a pale eye into the mix by simply covering your lid with the bright gold shadow and nothing else.

Inspiration: Dior Vernis + Holton Rower

Last Thursday, Dior Beauty teamed up with the Hole Gallery for a dinner and pour (more on that later) to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Dior Vernis and artist Holton Rower’s solo show at the gallery. Art and beauty are two of my most beloved passions so naturally I was honored to be included. The dinner was beautiful as was to be expected from Dior: White candles that melted into multicolored drippings, the most phenomenal flower table dressings, and even DIY dessert pours (to mirror the pour paintings of Holton Rower, on display in the gallery).

After dinner, guests like Harley Viera-Netwon, Charlotte Ronson,  Julian Schnabel, and Dior’s Dianne Vavra gathered into an adjacent room to watch Holton make an original pour painting – from start to finish. He used 5 Dior Vernis bottles to create the shape of the pour (see images) and approximately 5,000 unique colors for the painting: Holton pours cups of paint onto a piece of material, layering each color over the other while the paint colors flow and weave into a beautiful and intricate shape on the canvas. Five of the colors used to create this piece were chosen by Holton and matched with Dior Vernis shades: Red Royalty #999, Gris Montaigne #707,Psychedelic Orange #545, Flapper Pink #453 and Nirvana #704.

How it begins – Holton, the wood, paint, and the Dior Vernis bottles.

The Process: Pouring

Dior Vernis pour 1: Flapper Pink

Dior Vernis pour 2: Psychedelic Orange

Dior Vernis pour 3: Red Royalty

Dior Vernis pour4: Gris Montaigne

Dior Vernis pour 5: Nirvana

*Beauty Fact: “In 1962, Dior was the very first Couture House to launch its own brand name nail lacquer to match its already iconic lipsticks. A Dior slogan from the period captures the popularity of the new product: “Today, the four shimmering letters of Dior have come to the tips of your ten fingers.”

A new color and type of flower was sprinkled on the table every 10 minutes throughout the meal.

On my recent jaunt to Paris, I had the pleasure of going as a guest of Dior Beauty for the launch of the Dior Addict Extreme Lipstick (my favorite Brit, Kate Moss, just so happens to be the face of the collection). My three day Dior stay was equal parts educational, inspiring, and extremely pampering (an hour and a half L’Ore de Vie facial and massage at the Dior Institut in the Plaza Athenee – I highly, highly recommend as this is pampering at its finest!).

As part of the Addict Extreme launch, Dior chose a handful of bloggers from around the world to come to Paris for a day of makeup and photos at the Dior Couture Salon on Avenue Montaigne (above the Dior store). Before I discuss the lippies, let me digress briefly and share my experience of the Dior Couture Salon. In one word: magnificent. This is the place where many of the beautiful runway dresses, shoes and jewels go to live out the remainder of the their days. It’s like a Dior couture museum. From the 7 inch stilettos (that I tried to buy) to a breathtakingly fabulous aubergine tulle gown that was calling my name (I offered to try it on, they politely declined), to fur boas the color of candy and necklaces that weigh more than me, the Dior Salon is a place that speaks to the brand’s unbelievable longevity and heritage. The walls of the stairwells are adorned with photos – some of Mr. Dior, others of celebrities in Dior. One photo that caught my attention was an image of Marilyn Monroe in a beautiful black armless dress, cinched at the waist and billowed out at the skirt. She has several strands of pearls around her neck and looks as elegant as I’ve ever seen her. One of the men who worked at the Paris office of Dior noticed me studying the photo and explained that this was the last photo shoot of Marilyn Monroe ever taken. She is wearing Christian Dior. Chills.

Enough couture, onto beauty. We were first instructed to choose a look – one of four – that went with the four color families represented by the 12 new Addict Extreme shades: Lucky, inspired by muse Kate Moss, is a sheer pink; Incognito, a discreet beige, is an homage to the chic Parisian woman; Plaza, a mauve shade, is inspired by the Plaza Athenee hotel; and Riviera, a bright coral, is an ode to sunny, island getaways. The other 8 shades all range within these color families (a spectrum of corals, mauves, beiges, and pinks – click here for all of the 12 colors).

After choosing Lucky as my look (an obvious choice as anything Kate Moss and pink pretty much means I’ll love it) – very fresh and modern with a lovely pink pout and a subtle smoky eye – Dior makeup artist Violette went to work creating the look. A manicurist painted my nails a matching shade from the new Dior Vernis Lacquer colors (I don’t remember the last time I put a color on my nails but, hey, when in Paris, do as the Parisians do…). After makeup and nails were completed, I was introduced to the entire line of lip colors where I had the chance to play around with the shades and the consistency. Here’s what I love about the lippies: while the shades are incredibly colorful, the formula is somewhat sheer making the lipstick actually appear glossy rather than matte, and not too pigmented. If you want a deeper color, all you need to do is layer. I am a huge fan of sheer for spring and summer and, while I love a bold pink or a crisp red lip, I also like the option of wearing it sheer. This lipstick allows you the ability to do both. And every single one of the 12 shades is completely wearable. There isn’t a single color that is trendy or over-the-top. Classic and classy, just as you’d expect from Dior.

Then it was onto the photo shoot. A few props (necklace, hot pink boa, a wide-brimmed hat), a quick reapply of my Lucky lippy, and I was ready for my close-up!

*BIG thanks to Bryn Kenny and the entire Paris Dior team.

I used the center shade, a speckled bone glitter, on my brow bone to highlight. For lips, I chose an orange/ red (very “holiday party” spirit) and dabbed a bit on the apples of my cheeks to add color.

Did You Know: For a smoky look, you can use the dark shade in the crease and under the lower lash line. Make sure to sweep out.

Dior’s New Velvet Eyes Eyeliner PATCHES

By | makeup | One Comment

Now, this is the product launch of the season! I am so excited to try out Dior’s new adhesive eyeliner, I feel like a little girl waiting for Santa at Christmas. An eyeliner patch so that I never have to paint my eyes in that ridiculously straight line again?! Praise the Lord!!!

Last night, Harley Viera Newton – Dior Beauty Ambassador – rocked the new Velvet Eyes Eyeliner Patches for Fashion’s Night Out. I’m loving her entire downtown-hipster-chic look. Major focal point on the eyes (faux diamond rhinestones and all!) with a flawless complexion and a nicely stained and subdued red lip. Perfection!

Here’s how you can get the look:

INSPIRATION: “I wanted to combine Harley’s cool, downtown vibe with a natural, youthful look. The Velvet Eyes eyeliner patches were obviously the focus, so I started by dusting the lid of the eye with a light shade from the new 3-Couleurs Eyeshadow palette in Smoky Nude and Diorshow Blackout mascara. Then I finished with a light stain of red on the lips.” — Celebrity Makeup Artist, Gina Daddona

Eyes: NEW Dior Velvet Eyes, Dior 3-Couleurs Eyeshadow in Smoky Nude, Diorshow Blackout Mascara
Lips: Rouge Dior Lipcolor in Zinnia Red #743
Cheeks: Diorblush in English Rose
Skin: Diorskin Airflash Spray Foundation #400, Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen

I’ll need to try Velvet Eyes myself to see if it’s as effortless and remarkable as it appears to be. If so, this may just change the face of eyeliner forever!!!

Velvet Eyes is available at Sephora.com (exclusive).

GET THE LOOK: Natalie Portman at the Oscars

This is one of my favorite looks from last night. Natalie had that true movie star vibe going on. The side-swept hair was very Old-Hollywood and the makeup channeled a modern day Sophia Loren.

Makeup artist Eileen Kastner-Delago created a glowing look for Natalie Portman, the face of Miss Dior Cherie. “I was inspired by her dress so I went with more purple tones,” said Kastner-Delago.

Get The Look: Emma Watson

For all of you Harry Potter fans out there, here’s a little beauty dish to tie you over until the release of the franchise’s latest installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

Celebrity Makeup Artist Geoffrey Rodriguez created a “soft, 80’s inspired look. We chose warm tones to complement her accessories which stood out beautifully against her simple black dress,” says Rodriguez. “Emma’s new hairstyle allows more freedom and creativity with her makeup.”

First, I prepped the skin with Dior Hydra Life Serum. Then I followed with DiorSkin Nude Foundation and Concealer. I applied Dior Skinflash #002 on top of her cheekbones to accentuate the softly-sculpted cheek which was achieved by applying DiorBronze just slightly under the cheekbones from the hair line followed by a dusting of DiorBlush on the apples of the cheeks and softly blending the two together. I wanted to keep the eyes subtle and warm so I used the Dior 5-Colour Palette in Five Golds to create a slightly elongated eye to complement her brows which I emphasized and elongated with Dior Brow Styler.”

Skin: Dior Hydra Life Serum, DiorSkin Nude Foundation #30 and DiorSkin Nude
Concealer #20
Cheeks: Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen #002, DiorBronze Matte Bronzing

Inspired By: Dangerous Beauty

One of my favorite movies — amazing cast and costumes — and great inspiration for spring/ summer beauty: Dangerous Beauty, the film about Venetian Courtesans.

The lead actress, Catherine McCormick plays Courtesan and Poetess, Vanessa Franco. She exhibits grace, style and a flair for perfectly pastel makeup.

Pronounced “Ectasy,” that’s exactly what this mascara does to my eyes – puts them in a state of bliss. DiorShow’s latest installment, EXTASE, is nothing short of perfection. The other night as I ventured out for some excitement in my Extase, a friend actually said that my lashes looked like Malcolm McDowell’s in A Clockwork Orange. I’ll take that!

The wand is like 4 Givenchy Phenomen Eyes Balls all connected to form the power brush of all time. It gets into every lash, lengthening, coating and thickening. My only qualm is that it tends to goop a bit but a few extra strokes of the wand and the mascara is pretty evenly distributed leaving you with ginormously gorgeous wonder lashes.

A word (or several…) from the company:
“Exclusive Metamorphosis Powders double is size upon application and spherical Black Pearl pigments wrap around each lash for 3D volume. A patented ceramid called SR38 actually penetrates and repairs, for stronger and fuller lashes… Extase is the first mascara to plump lashes inside and out…”

This is a statment mascara, ladies. Make no mistake, you and your lashes will be noticed so if your shy with the compliments, this is not the mascara for you. For the rest of us, go score some stares!
