WEEKLY MUST HAVE: David Babaii Bohemian Beach Spray

By | weekly must-have | 4 Comments

This week, our must have is coming a bit early. I’m taking a (much needed ) vacation, so I’m going to be radio silent from Beauty Banter for a few days. I’ll try and check in early next week with a beachy update (perhaps a Spring Break Glam post?)…

In honor of my surf and sun vaca, I thought I’d post about one of my all time favorite vacation hair fixtures – David Babaii’s Bohemian Beach Spray. I’m a sucker for au natural beach curls when lounging ocean-side and nothing helps to make a wave like a little beach spray (ocean water works wonders on the locks too). I have long been obsessed with John Frieda’s Beach Spray – it had the perfect mix of shine, wave and hold sans the crunch factor – but, sadly, they discontinued. David Babaii’s Bohemian Beach Spray is a pretty good alternative.

A word (or several…) from the company:
“Bohemian Beach Spray is an eco-friendly non-aerosol styling spray that works for all hair types.  It can be used on wet or dry hair to create various hair textures and volume. Globally sourced, Bohemian Beach Spray contains sea salt from the Dead Sea in Israel for naturally enhanced texture; mineral  rich Volcanic Ash from the Vanauatu Islands of the South Pacific for increased volume; a trio of Blue Algae, Mango and Kiwi  that keep hair thoroughly hydrated.  Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Hemp Oil and Cupuacu Butter further aid moisture retention. This extraordinary blend works together to create texture or volume, while strengthening and moisturizing. “

So, it’s got the organic thing going on which I LOVE and it’s good for my hair yet it still gives me that beachy, messy, just-stepped-out-of-the-ocean -curl thing. Au Natural never looked so good.

Vacation here I come! Hey, my hair gets a well-deserved vaca too!

GIRL CRUSH: Uma Thurman

By | celebrity looks | 3 Comments

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Uma Thurman walking a red carpet… and it was SO worth the wait! At Tuesday night’s LA premiere of her new film, Ceremony, directed by my friend Max Winkler, (it’s a must-see!), Uma looked fierce as ever. She put a contemporary twist on the staple braid, with flowing strands of curls, and did thick liner and lashes paired with a mauveish pink pout. Her hair hue wasn’t too blonde, more golden like a modern-day Rapunzel.

At 40 years old, the actress has never looked better (or more youthful). Loving it!

Here’s how to get the hair, straight from celeb stylist David Babaii, who tamed the tresses:

*David prepared Uma’s freshly washed and conditioned hair by massaging a dime size amount of Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment into her tresses from roots to ends, combing it through with a wide tooth comb for even distribution.

*Next, he used a blow dryer to dry the hair with a large round brush, lifting the root area for added volume and cupping the ends under for a smooth, rounded finish.

*After drying, he applied an additional amount of Pequi Oil for control and then loosely gathered the hair with his fingers and braiding it into a long, loose braid down the center back.

*He secured it with a rubber band while leaving the shorter top and side layers free.

*To finish, David created soft loose curls with a 1 ½” curling iron by taking large sections and wrapping them around the inside barrel, holding for a few seconds.

*He then released allowing the curls to fall naturally to achieve a true French Bohemian Look.

So simple, I could totally rock this red carpet ‘do at home! Watch out, Friday night…

Get The Look: Gwyneth Paltrow

By | celebrity looks | One Comment

Sunday night’s Grammy Awards brought out all the crazies — and beauties. This, here, is one of my favorite looks by rising country star (you are correct if detecting an air of sarcasm… stick to the movies, sister!) Gwyneth Paltrow… (note how her fuschia nails match the feather earrings – fierce!):

CHANEL Celebrity Makeup Artist Angela Levin

“I wanted sexy rock chic for Gwyneth!  After applying a light layer of
CHANEL Hydramax + Active Moisture Cream and waiting about ten minutes for
it to absorb, I applied CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting
Makeup in BR20 (available in March).  For the eyes I chose CHANEL Soft
Touch Eyeshadow in Cinnamon,  smoking the eyes, and also on the lower lash
line. And of course tons and tons of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir! For
concealer I used CHANEL Lift Lumière Smoothing and Rejuvinating Concealer
in Rose Lumière in a half moon shape blending almost to the hair line and
into the temples next to eye brow.  I used round motions to create a soft
sexy look. For her cheeks, I used the cream cheek colour in the CHANEL
Multi-Use Makeup Palette in Paris- L.A, applying with a tapping motion
using my fingers.  Finally, her lips CHANEL Ultra-Wear Lip Colour in Rose

“Wild Bohemian” look, created by Celebrity Hairstylist David Babaii for Couture Colour.

David began by applying Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment
and gently massaging it into the hair. The Pequi Oil Treatment
used prior to blow drying is Babaii’s secret for silky, shiny hair.

David then rough dried the hair with the Ionic Blow Dryer
for texture and volume. Next, he created a
center part and began taking random sections and wrapping
only the center portion of some of the strands (leaving the top
and ends free) around a 1” curling iron Alternating stands
were wrapped around the curling iron, leaving only the very
tips free. This was done to create uneven curl patterns. Once
the strand cooled, David ran his fingers up the strand creating
a “fanning effect”. To finish, he added additional
Couture Colur Pequi Oil Treatment to his hands and tousled the waves
for added volume, texture and hold.

Who was your favorite Grammy look?!

A few of my favorite things… Travel Edition

By | favorites | 7 Comments

I receive countless emails asking about my travel regimen so I thought I’d share some of my absolute favorite travel products with you today, on the heels of my venture west to warmer weather. Sadly, the sun has yet to make an appearance but here’s to wishful thinking (and warmer temps, thank God).

So, considering that it is travel season, these items should come in handy like, today.

Here are a few of my favorite travel items:

– I use it for my lips, cuticles, eyes AND sinus’. It works wonders to keep the entire lot hydrated. It’s also most effective for all climates. Coming from a blizzard (NYC) to a dessert (LA), climate was bound to give my skin something to get all chapped up about.

Smashbox O-Gloss – Flying leaves me ghostly pale and drained of all color — skin, eyelids and lips. O-Gloss comes in handy when I want a hint of pink — like a stain — with a surge of moisture. I also use it on my cheeks to give them a natural flush.

– Yes, I still care about the state of my hair 30,000 feet above ground. The beach spray is the perfect formula to take travel hair and make it beach-chic. Messy tresses that look — and smell — salon styled.

Klorane Dry Shampoo – The travel size is perfect to spray pre-landing for a quick touch-up-and-go. Gets rid of dirt and grease buildup from the flight and gives hair an added bounce of volume.

Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream – It’s imperative to hydrate hands and nails while in flight. My current cream of choice comes thanks to french skincare line, Caudelie. Full of anti-oxidants and grape seed, the cream smells amazing and moisturizes equally as impressively. I apply at least every 30 minutes.

– You can use this balm anywhere, I like to pat it on my face, especially during a flight. With all of that reprocessed air, my skin is begging for some TLC. Skin Foods offers my face moisture, soothing properties of lavender and calendula and an all-around healthy glow. Can also be used on hands, feet, around the eye area, neck and elbows. Apply sparingly.

Earth Day Hair Tips From Celebrity Stylist David Babaii

By | hair | One Comment

In case you’re unaware, April 22 is Earth Day. While a plethora of companies have invested mega-bucks into marketing “green” campaigns in honor of the celebration, David Babaii hair care has promoted eco-friendly hair care since its inception.

David teamed up with Kate Hudson to launch David Babaii for WildAid, a full range hair line that not only is made with natural, good-for-the-Earth (and you) products, it also gives 10% of its revenue to WildAid, the wildlife conservation organization.

Yay to sustainable beauty!

Here, the man behind the brand and the manes of celebs including Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Scarlet Johansson, Jessica Alba and Demi Moore, David Babaii himself, offers 5 eco-chic ideas for styling hair sans electricity:

1. Get curls and texture without styling tools

For long hair, follow these steps:

  • After shampooing spray your entire head with the David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray scrunch and/or twist sections then allow to air dry.
  • Once dry, if added texture or volume is desired flip your head over and back, give it a quick shake.
  • To set it all in place, lightly spray your hair with hair spray.

For short hair, follow these steps:

  • Towel dry freshly washed hair thoroughly to begin the foundation.
  • Spray your entire head with a Beach Spray and allow to air dry.
  • When hair is dry apply some David Babaii for WildAid Molding Paste and arrange texture until you are happy with the look.

2. Keep your hair fresh without a shampoo

In order to avoid excess oil or buildup (and save on water use), use a bit of baby powder throughout the hair acting as a dry shampoo, which helps eliminate oil and leaves a fresh scent throughout the day. Alternatively, you can use a cosmetic damp cotton pad and dab it around the hairline and roots to eliminate any excess oil. If you wish, mist the pad with a light oil free fragrance or squeeze a few drops from a fresh lemon to give hair that fresh smell

3. Wash your hair the night before – to save time and electricity – and awake up with a style

  • When hair is slightly damp, create multiple sections and braid your hair tying the ends with an elastic band (depending on how much texture you want, make the braids loose (less texture) or tight (more texture)) *the braids do not need to be very precise
  • Next, spray the braids with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and go to sleep
  • When you wake up, undo the braids, give your head a little shake, and add in some additional Bohemian Beach Spray to achieve desired texture and volume – this creates a great Bohemian Look.

An Alternate Look:

  • Place all of your hair in a messy ponytail – be creative and twist sections tight or loose to achieve various textures
  • When your pony tail is secured, spray with a Beach Spray and sweet dreams
  • When you awake, undo the pony tail for an effortless but eco-chic look

4. Create style for stick straight hair

For super straight hair, it’s is all about using fun accessories. Play around with different head bands, hair pins, and clips to achieve a fun and playful look. Alternatively, you can tie your hair in a sleek low pony tail.

After tying it up, take small strands of hair and pin them on top of and underneath the pony tail to achieve the illusion of having volume for those with super straight hair.

You can also try my favorite half up style:

  • Section off the sides and top while leaving the back of your hair down.
  • Secure the top and sides with an accessory or simple bobby pins.
  • Allow a few pieces of hair to fall naturally to give you a soft natural look.

5. Use items around the house to achieve glam

  • A new and un-used toothbrush is a great household product; it can be used to back brush close to the scalp area for volume or even sweep away those fly-a-ways. Going back in time, an old soda pop can still do the trick of setting hair and achieving large lopped curls.
  • Other ideas are to use household rubber bands for your messy ponytails or braids. And, don’t discard those dryer sheets. There is usually some fragrance left over to wipe your combs and brushes to not only freshen them but help with static as well.
  • Use ribbons, scarves and other items you have lying around (or even ones that wrapped a gift!) to add some jazz to your ‘do. A ribbon can make a regular ponytail flirty and a scarf can make just about any look more eco-chic. This all helps to reduce the amount of household waste and makes for a great environmentally friendly choice for DIY hair.

I’m loving these ideas and will definitely put them into use on Wednesday. I care about my carbon footprint, damn it!

Care For Your Hair AND The Environment.. David Babaii For WildAid

By | hair | One Comment

I’ve been promising this post for quite some time – David Babaii For WildAid’s Sulfate-Free Hair Products. Well, girlies, I like these products – the Amplifying Shampoo and Conditioner thoroughly cleanses without stripping my hair color or overdrying; the Bohemian Beach Spray creates that lovely “just rolled out of bed” look while still maintaining moisture – but what I really love is the initiative that this company is taking to preserve the our wildlife.

As we mentioned a couple of months ago, Kate Hudson is the spokeschick for the company. She teamed up with celebrity stylist, David Babaii to create a line of hair products that preserve our hair… and the wildlife. WildAid is “a non-profit organization that works with governments and communities of the world to reverse the devastation of our planet’s wildlife.” A percentage of the money made from sales of the hair care line go to WildAid, the global wildlife conservation organization.

So, just think. When you purchase a great shampoo that protects YOUR hair you are actually protecting wild animals too! And, all of the products are made with healthy, pro-environment ingredients like volcanic ash and blue algae extract!

Now, a few thoughts on the products:

Amplifying Shampoo and Conditioner
– Since the products don’t contain sulfates, the shampoos don’t sud as much (because sulfates are what cause shampoos to lather). But don’t fret, you’re still getting one thorough cleanse! I love how soft and full my hair is after using the combo. My only complaint is the scent – it’s very masculine and overly-fragrant. But hey, I can’t really complain! I’d rather live with a manly scent and have healthy, volumized hair (while protecting the environment), then a sweet-smelling scent and stripped hair. The Amplifying Shampoo and Conditioner contains volcanic ash for volume, white ginger for shine and coconut oil for lather (much better then those sucky sulfates!). $13.95

Bohemian Beach Spray – This is my favorite product that I’ve tried from the line. I love the name… “Bohemian”… because that’s exactly how I feel after I spritz it on my mop. It smells delish – tropical refreshing – without being overwhelming. And it gives my hair an edge! Body and shine and sexy bed head sans sulfates, parabens and petrochemicals! Instead, the spray contains sea salt from the Dead Sea for texture, volcanic ash for volume, blue algae, mango and kiwi for hydration, AND shea butter, jojoba oil, hemp oil and cupuacu butter for added moisture!

David Babaii for WildAid proves that you don’t need to use harsh chemicals and environmentally devastating ingredients to create sexy, celebrity hair! You can achieve beautiful hair without harming the environment!
