Illuminating Powder with Shimmer $65
Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Complice 93 $28.50
Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Slate 83 $28.50
Pure Shine Intense Colour Long Wear Lip Gloss in Troublant 68 $32
Glossimer in Sweet Beige 297 $29.50

How To: This look is very simple and wearable, which is precisely the point of the collection: the most essential products that one would need for their makeup bag. I started by applying the lightest shadow shade from lid to brow bone, then I used slate in the crease and a bit under the lower lash line for a very subtle smoky effect. I worked the illuminating powder into my cheek bones and, with my finger, applied onto my brow bones to highlight and lift. I finished with a layer of lip gloss in Troublant which was a bit too matte for the look, so I added Glossimer in Sweet Beige for a shiny nude kick.

Did You Know: You can give your eyes a glossy lid look by dabbing the Glossimer lip gloss on top of the shadows. These neutral colors lend themselves really well to the trend. Try it!

Bathing Beauty: Kim Meyer

By | bathing beauties | 12 Comments

I first met Kim Meyer a few years ago when she was working in the PR department at Chanel Beauty (a highly coveted beauty job, indeed). It was a professional relationship filled with press releases and product testing and interviews with Chanel’s esteemed makeup artists. When news spread that Kim was leaving her post at Chanel for a job  as Director of Public Relations for The Wall Group (a well-known and well respected agency that reps beauty pros from makeup artists to manicurists) in LA, my first thought was, “who leaves Chanel?” But since Kim’s move to The Wall Group (and Los Angeles), I’ve actually gotten to know her more on a personal and professional level, and witness first hand, her complete adoration and admiration for the artists whom she works with. And The Wall Group represents some of the greats – from celebrity makeup artists like Fiona Stiles and Pati Dubroff to hair stylists like Thomas Dunkin and David Mallett – and a host of other extremely talented beauty and fashion experts (Amanda Ross, Rachel Zoe, Christophe Robin, to name a few). A job filled with this much daily talent and creativity? I’m envious (almost). I have had the privilege of interviewing so many of these wonderful beauty experts since Kim’s arrival at the Wall Group – and I, a self-proclaimed beauty expert, have learned so much from these wonderfully special men and women.

So, when it came to doing a Bathing Beauty piece on Kim Meyer, it was a no-brainer, really. She’s one of the most knowledgable women working in beauty today. While you may not see her name in glossy magazines and while she may not be the one responsible for the red carpet hair and makeup you are currently obsessing over, she is most certainly the woman behind-the-scenes making it all happen. When it comes to insider tips and industry secrets, Kim is chock-full of them. Here are a few of her favorite products:

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1.Mascara – I am naturally blonde and fair, so without mascara my eyelashes are practically invisible! I won’t even check the mail without mascara. My favorites are CHANEL Inimitable Mascara, and Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara.
2. Body lotion – I am obsessed with moisturizing after the shower! My favorite is .
3. Clarisonic Brush – this has changed the way my skin looks. I try to wash my face using it at least once a day.
4. Red nail polish – I used to be a little adventurous with my nail color… But I’ve realized I am most happy with some variety of red. From an orangey red like OPI’s Monsooner or Later, to a true red like Essie’s Bordeaux, to a deep purple-y red like CHANEL’s Vamp. I always have short, clean red nails.
5. Tom Ford Santal Blush Eau de Parfum– I have always been super sensitive to fragrance, and it’s been difficult for me to find one I can’t live without. My good friend Alex Nourafshan gave me Santal Blush for my birthday, and I fell in love with it at first sniff! Not only does it smell amazing, but the packaging is beautiful too.

What is your all-time favorite product?
CHANEL Hydramax + Active Cream.  My friends nicknamed this product “dream cream.”  It’s super hydrating, light weight, and smells delicious.  I’ve been using it daily since it launched, and have turned all my friends and family onto it too.

What product do you buy in bulk?
I have little tubes in every one of my bags, and I keep a big one in my bedside drawer.  I am obsessed with hydrated, healthy lips!  It’s also great for really dry rough areas in the winter months – hands, elbows, knees.

Favorite hair product?
Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m slightly obsessed with my hair.  I don’t color my hair, but my friend and hair stylist Jen Atkin turned me on to Fekkai Salon Technician Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s gentle, doesn’t leave behind any product residue, and smells nice.  And of course, I love   I used to stock up on it when I traveled to Paris – I’m so happy I can find it at Target now!

You moisturize your face with…
CHANEL Hydramax + Active Cream at night, Clarins Extra-Firming Day Lotion & Sunscreen SPF 15 in the morning.  Also, my friend Jeanne Yang recently turned me on to Sunday Riley Juno Tranformative Lipid Serum. I was skeptical of a face oil at first, but after using this product for a week, my skin felt amazing and had a visible glow to it!

Favorite body product?
Besides the Jergens lotion I use daily, I am a tried and true fan of The Body Shop’s Body Butter.  Especially the Avocado and Coconut formulas.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
I’ve been so fortunate to work with some of the beauty industry’s top talent over the past decade.  The one tip I’ve taken away from every single one of them is that sleep and hydration is KEY to keeping your skin looking healthy and young.  I just wish I’d paid more attention in my early 20s.

Beauty icon you admire?
Patti Hansen.  I think she embodies everything that is chic, beautiful, and eternally cool.

Winter Collection: Chanel

Collection: ILLUSIONS D’OMBRES DE CHANEL Collection for Fall 2011

Products Used:
Les 4 Ombres in Predlude 33 $57.00
Levres Scintillantes Glossimer in Braise $28.50

How To: I used the lightest shade in the quad – a shimmery bone hue – from lash line to brow bone. I mixed the two medium brown shades together to create a rich chestnut hue and swept all over the lid. I lightly brushed the darkest brown in the crease and under the lower lash line. I went back and added a bit more of the shimmery bone shade to the brow bone for emphasis. (P.S. I really love this Chanel winter eye – the colors are rich and sultry and universally glam).and For the lips, I used the “burnt red” sheer gloss for a wash of color without overdosing on pigment.

Did You Know: Apply additional layers of the gloss to make lips appear darker. You can also layer over a red lippy for a combination of matte red and glossy brick (it makes a gorge color).
There is another gloss in the collection that I am pretty obsessed with – Levres Scintillantes Glossimer in Pampille, a sheer seashell hue (pictured below). Use when going for the classic dark eyes/ light lips combo.

*Unless otherwise noted, face makeup is: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in #6; RMS Beauty “Un”Cover-Up in #22. Brows are Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel in Espresso. Mascara is Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara in Deep Black.

Paris Fashion Week and Chanel Runway Beauty – GET THE LOOK!

By | celebrity looks | One Comment

A TON went down in Paris this past week. Kate Moss made a smoking (legitimate, like with a cigarette) return to the runway at Louis Vuitton, Galliano was fired from Dior and Lady Gaga opened the Thierry Mugler show.  WOW, what a week!

So, despite all the theatrics that occurred, we wanted to touch upon the beauty of one of our favorite fashion houses: Chanel. The faces were epic with a smoldering, metallic grey eye and a kick-ass gun metal nail polish (dying over!).

Peter Philips, Creative Director of CHANEL Make Up, dishes on the CHANEL products used to create the runway beauty looks:

Get The Look: Gwyneth Paltrow

By | celebrity looks | One Comment

Sunday night’s Grammy Awards brought out all the crazies — and beauties. This, here, is one of my favorite looks by rising country star (you are correct if detecting an air of sarcasm… stick to the movies, sister!) Gwyneth Paltrow… (note how her fuschia nails match the feather earrings – fierce!):

MAKEUP:

CHANEL Celebrity Makeup Artist Angela Levin

“I wanted sexy rock chic for Gwyneth!  After applying a light layer of
CHANEL Hydramax + Active Moisture Cream and waiting about ten minutes for
it to absorb, I applied CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting
Makeup in BR20 (available in March).  For the eyes I chose CHANEL Soft
Touch Eyeshadow in Cinnamon,  smoking the eyes, and also on the lower lash
line. And of course tons and tons of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir! For
concealer I used CHANEL Lift Lumière Smoothing and Rejuvinating Concealer
in Rose Lumière in a half moon shape blending almost to the hair line and
into the temples next to eye brow.  I used round motions to create a soft
sexy look. For her cheeks, I used the cream cheek colour in the CHANEL
Multi-Use Makeup Palette in Paris- L.A, applying with a tapping motion
using my fingers.  Finally, her lips CHANEL Ultra-Wear Lip Colour in Rose
Agate.”

HAIR:

“Wild Bohemian” look, created by Celebrity Hairstylist David Babaii for Couture Colour.

David began by applying Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment
and gently massaging it into the hair. The Pequi Oil Treatment
used prior to blow drying is Babaii’s secret for silky, shiny hair.

David then rough dried the hair with the Ionic Blow Dryer
for texture and volume. Next, he created a
center part and began taking random sections and wrapping
only the center portion of some of the strands (leaving the top
and ends free) around a 1” curling iron Alternating stands
were wrapped around the curling iron, leaving only the very
tips free. This was done to create uneven curl patterns. Once
the strand cooled, David ran his fingers up the strand creating
a “fanning effect”. To finish, he added additional
Couture Colur Pequi Oil Treatment to his hands and tousled the waves
for added volume, texture and hold.

Who was your favorite Grammy look?!

If you’re unaware, the 2011 Spring/ Summer Haute Couture Shows just wrapped in Paris. Peter Philips, Creative Director of CHANEL Make Up used the following CHANEL products to create the runway beauty looks:

WEEKLY MUST-HAVE: Chanel Inimitable Mascara

By | weekly must-have | 4 Comments

Oh where, oh where has this mascara been hiding?! I’ve discovered my newest holy grail mascara just in time for the holiday season. If you’re in the market for a new mascara, pay close attention…. I’m hearting Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Black.

Let’s start with the applicator – always a telltale sign of what’s to come. This mascara boasts a thin plastic applicator, great for getting into those hard to reach places. The formula is outstanding. It volumizes, lengthens, curls and separates all while coating eyes with the blackest black. What I really notice when wearing this mascara is how it doesn’t clump… SIGH. While my lashes are long, long, long and thick, they’re also clump-free and pure batty lashes. I was noticing with my old must-have, Dior Extase, that my lashes were clumping like crazy and while the formula delivered lengthy lashes, it didn’t do much in the separation department.

A word (or several…) from the company:

“A sophisticated formula and unique brush design combine to deliver lush, long-wearing colour so precisely that each lash, even the finest, is perfectly defined and separated. Pro-Vitamin B5 hydrates and conditions lashes to keep them supple and healthy-looking.”

I’ve discovered my new daily must-have mascara — what have YOU been wearing?

GIRL CRUSH: Anne Hathaway

By | celebrity looks | 7 Comments

Annie’s really grown up from being the awkward teen in the Princess Diaries flicks. At her premiere for Love And Other Drugs, she looked like a red carpet pro!

Here are the deets:

HAIR

INSPIRATION: Adir Abergel was inspired by the 70’s

HOW TO GET THE LOOK: Adir started by applying the Fekkai Full Blown Volume™ Styling Whip on wet hair.   Using a round brush, he dried the hair completely.  With a 1 ¼ inch curling iron, Adir curled the hair into barrel curls and pinned the hair leaving it to cool. Once cooled, he took out the curls and brushed hair with a flat brush.  Then, he set the hair with Fekkai Coiff Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Crème and secured with Fekkai Coiff™ Sheer Hold Hairspray.

MAKEUP

INSPIRATION: “For the premiere of Love and Other Drugs in Los Angeles, Anne wore a
creamy dress which was so amazing, it evoked images from Fellini Movies, so
I decided on a modern day La Dolce Vita.” — Chanel Makeup Artist, Kate Lee (SIDE NOTE: Isn’t Anne the Lancome spokeschick?!?)

HOW TO GET THE LOOK: I prepped her skin with CHANEL Sublimage Concentrate, then smoothed and evened the skin tone with CHANEL Vitalumiere Fluid Makeup so as to keep the
skin approachable, but peachy.  I used CHANEL Éclat Lumière in Beige Rosé to brighten under the eyes, and the brow bone. Then, on the lid I carefully blended CHANEL Ombre D’eau Fluid Eyeshadow in Delta, taking care not to blend too far above the socket. Next, I used Laura Mercier Caviar liner to trace two perfect lines along the lash line, making them more definite towards the outer edges. I spent quite a bit of time working on Anne’s brows, gently filling and fixing with Anastasia Brow Gel.

On her cheeks and across the bridge of the nose I used Nars blush In Lovejoy. Anne’s lip colour was CHANEL Rouge Allure Laque in Santal which is a gorgeous shade between a peach and a salmon pink. It is purely a gloss with no shimmer. I love this colour!  Lashes were curled and given a coat of CHANEL Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir, and then I applied a full
set of strip lashes for a liddy effect.”

GIRL CRUSH: BLAKE LIVELY

By | celebrity looks | No Comments

You’re either a Serena sort of girl or a Blair. I’m definitely a Blair. But Blake Lively’s looking quite pretty at Spike TV’s “Scream 2010” awards (sans for the Taco Bell step and repeat in the background)… I’m loving that her hair is not an over processed bonde. I like how she’s done a dramatic eye AND lip, copper being the hue of choice for both. I’m really digging that this is a bold look indicative of the red carpet and that Blake is carrying it off perfectly. Serena would be proud.

CHANEL Celebrity Makeup Artist Rachel Goodwin is responsible for the face. Here are her tips:

“I wanted Blake’s makeup to be radiant and golden, so I used lots of warm desert colors. On her skin I blended Burberry Sheer Luminous Fluid foundation in Trench #03 dampened with Shea Terra Organics Moroccan Rose Water. I subtly sculpted her cheekbones with Soleil Tan de CHANEL Moisturizing Bronzing Powder in Terre Ambre using a flat foundation brush and placed Nars Sex Appeal Blush on the apples of her cheeks.

Her eyes were a blend of warm golden browns from the CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Dunes and defined her lashes with CHANEL Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir. On her lips I used Tom Ford’s Private Blend in Warm Sable topped with CHANEL Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Insouciance. I have been obsessing over this color for months now and using it constantly, but I must say on Blake it was jaw dropping. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if his girl makes everyone want to start rocking a tan lip!”

GIRL CRUSH: Keira Knightley

By | celebrity looks | 4 Comments

If movie stars are born, not made, then Keira Knightley hit the genetic jackpot because this look has movie star written all over it. From the new ‘do, a short bob, to the makeup, sultry eyes, barely-there lips, to the gaze, looking over yonder in the distance, distracted, Keira is the epitome of Hollywood glam. Sigh.

Photographed here at the Chanel Spring-Summer 2011 Ready-to-Wear Show in Paris Keira embodies everything that a spokeschick – she’s the star of the upcoming COCO MADEMOISELLE advertising campaign – and a star should be. A bit aloof, all gorgeous.

Here are the deets on her face:

Face:  VITALUMIÈRE AQUA Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup SPF 15 in Beige Rosé – Tendre (available March 2011); JOUES CONTRASTE Powder Blush in Pink Explosion

Eyes: LES 4 OMBRES Quadra Eye Shadow in Tentation Cuivré; MASCARA INIMITABLE WATERPROOF in Noir

Lips: ROUGE COCO Hydrating Crème Lip Colour in Chintz
