Fashion Week Round-Up: Spring 2013 Makeup Trends

By | trends | 5 Comments

From New York to Paris, we’re feeling fresh-faced and colorful as we take a look back at the faces that graced runway after runway in the 4 fashion-forward cities. While some looks are meant to stay on the runway (like Vivienne Westwood’s exquisite heart face paintings, crafted by none other than the artistic genius Val Garland), others, like red lips and matte skin, are looks that will last come spring.

Here are our top 5 spring 2013 makeup trends, from the runways of New York, London, Milan, and Paris.

(1) Less is more. Have our mothers not taught us many times before, that less is more? The international fashion runways are no exception, as many designers kept their makeup simple, clean, and very much alive: focal point on a flawless, matte complexion.

(Left to right: Helmut Lang, Sass & Bide, Salvatore Ferragamo, Damir Doma)

SHOW: Helmut Lang
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Hannah Murray for NARS Cosmetics
LOOK: “The focus is really on the skin, which is fresh, sporty and scrubbed clean.”

SHOW: Sass & Bide
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Charlotte Tilbury for MAC Cosmetics
LOOK: “No makeup make-up.. handsome brow, fresh, natural, youthful, androgynous beauty.”

SHOW: Salvatore Ferragamo
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Tom Pecheux for MAC Cosmetics
LOOK: “Minimalistic purity.”

SHOW: Damir Doma
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Carole Columbani for MAC Cosmetics
LOOK: “Purity and shading.. androgynous makeup.”

(2) Color, color, colorful lids. What’s spring without a burst of color? Whether it be soft, bright, or bold, we’re very excited to paint our lids every shade of the rainbow.

(Left to right: Donna Kara, Antoni & Alison, Frankie Morello, Christian Dior)

SHOW: Donna Karan
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Charlotte Tilbury for MAC Cosmetics
LOOK: ” Blank canvas with sci-fi, modern feel.”

SHOW: Antoni & Alison
LOOK: Bold and playful eyes in blue, purple, and green.

SHOW: Frankie Morello
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Terry Barber for MAC Cosmetics
LOOK: “Very 60s shape on the eye, feline, think 60s sci-fi, Barbarella, Jean Shrimpton.”

SHOW: Christian Dior
LOOK: “Techno butterflies.”

(3) Smack ’em red. Red lips in April? Why not! No longer just a hue for the Fall/Winter months, red is now a focal point for springtime.

(Left to right: Carlos Miele, Burberry Prorsum, Moschino, Jean Paul Gaultier)

SHOW: Carlos Miele
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Gato for Maybelline
LOOK: “Sunkissed beach girls.”

SHOW: Burberry Prorsum
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Wendy Rowe for Burberry Beauty
LOOK: “Modern-day, sassy girl. She’s very flirty.”

SHOW: Moschino
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Tom Pecheux for MAC Cosmetics
LOOK: “60s meet Lana Del Rey.”

SHOW: Jean Paul Gaultier
LOOK: An homage to 80s pop — Boy George, Madonna, Michael Jackson

(4) Walk the black line. Thick or thin, black eyeliner is a staple of every girl’s makeup bag. This season, we’re seeing thin lines for a demure eye and heavier, graphic lines for a more extreme and dramatic look. Which look do you prefer?

(Left to right: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Temperley, Antonio Marras, Lanvin)

SHOW: 3.1 Phillip Lim
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Francelle Daly for NARS Cosmetics
LOOK: “We were going for ‘sophisticated rocker chick’ with this beauty look — The Runaways’ Joan Jett and Lita Ford, or Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth.”

SHOW: Temperley
LOOK: “Grace Kelly gone London rogue.”

SHOW: Antonio Marras
LOOK: “A meeting between a super aristocratic English marriage and those that take place in an Italian suburbs.”

SHOW: Lanvin
LOOK: “Purity and precision, not control or minimalism.”

(5) Bold brows. Pause the plucking because you’re going to want your bushy brows come spring. If you have naturally thin brows, like I do, don’t be afraid to feather them in with a brow pencil. Definitely worth a try next spring!

(Left to right: Marc Jacobs, Christopher Kane, Etro, Costume National)

SHOW: Marc Jacobs
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: François Nars for NARS Cosmetics
LOOK: “Typical Marc girl — very New York City, very chic, very interesting.”

SHOW: Christopher Kane
LOOK: “A young, cute Frankenstein face.”

SHOW: Etro
LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST: Charlotte Tilbury for MAC Cosmetics
LOOK: “It is fresh and clean, a pretty boy look.. a 90s contemporary feel.”

SHOW: Costume National
LOOK: “New minimalism. More technique, more ‘couture,’ more elegant.”

Trends: Fall Nail Polish

By | trends | 7 Comments

I love Fall. I love the crisp, cool weather, chunky sweaters and layers, but most of all, I love the change of colors. From bright pinks and corals to deep, rich shades of blues, berries, and this season, even some sparkle. What better way to experiment with this spectrum of color than on your nails? Here are my top five fall nail polish hues:

(1) Into the Blue: This Fall, Estee Lauder introduced their Pure Color Nail Lacquer Beyond Black Collection and I am in love with their rich, deep blue hue, aptly name Blue Blood. Inspired by the fantastical and mysterious Parisian night, this is by far my favorite color this season. With a clean and shiny finish, this polish exudes the sexiness of the Parisian Femme Fatale and yet captures the intensity of the City of Lights brilliantly. Vive la France!

Other blue hues I’m coveting include: Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Blue Satin, OPI Russian Navy, and Orly Nail Lacquer in Shockwave.

So when transitioning from Summer to Fall, keep your tips looking elegant and sophisticated with a clean navy hue. Can you ever really go wrong with navy?

(2) Hot Cocoa: When I think of cool weather, I’m also thinking of hot, warm drinks like cocoa. For a more neutral nail, I like to use Laura Mercier’s Cocoa Suede but when I want to kick it up a notch, Tom Ford’s Burnt Topaz offers a little shimmer that goes a long way. Both nail lacquers are super smooth and rarely chip. Two coats later, and your nails will be ready to spring into Fall.

For a richer chocolate-y nail tip, try Essie’s Little Brown Dress or Essie’s Hot Coco for a lighter but still cozy nail.

(3) It’s Golden: Now that the Olympics are over and the holiday season is just around the corner, what better way than to extend our love for gold than on our nails? Deborah Lippmann’s Boom Boom Pow will leave your nails feeling like you’ve won Olympic gold… or even a million bucks. This glamorous gold glitter contains 24K gold and it’s one my absolute favorites. If you’re looking for something more subdued try Essie’s Good as Gold from their newly launched Mirror Metallics Collection. It’s understated, refined, and yet seductive.

Other golden tips: Zoya Nail Polish in Goldie and Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Gold Haze.

(4) Burnished Reds: The changing colors of tree leaves is a clear sign that Fall is upon us and also inspiration for this season’s nail tips. Dior’s Red Ebony is a beautiful and smooth burnt red and it has just enough shimmer to keep your nails looking vibrant. For a color with a tad more classic crimson, try L’Oreal’s Red Tote. With the same rustic undertones, your nails will be screaming fall.

Other burnished reds to try: Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Scarab and Sephora by OPI Nail Color in Living in Cin-Namon.

(5) Merry Berry: Who doesn’t love a rich berry pie? Or better yet, a rich berry nail? YSL Violet Baroque with dark purple undertones and NARS Nail Polish in Chinatown with red undertones, are my top picks for a berry nail tip. What’s great about going berry is that you can choose from many different shades of purples and reds to match your Fall wardrobe. So try and experiment with different hues to find your perfect merry berry match.

To start, check out: Lancome Vernis in Love Nail Polish in Infusion de Prune and OPI Nail Lacquer Brights Collection in That’s Berry Daring.

If you’re still clutching onto these last few days of Summer, an easy transition to Fall can be made with your nail color. Which Fall colors will you be varnishing your pretty nails with this season?

Favorites: Wash Off Body Bronzers

By | favorites | 34 Comments

I’m quite partial to wash off body bronzers. Every year I see how sun is effecting my skin. Be it hyperpigmentation, dryness, blotchiness, uneven skin tone, my skin just isn’t as resilient as it once was. But I’ve come to peace with this. While I have yet to find a fake tanner that I’m seriously in lust over (buildable bronzer post coming soon), I have always been a fan of wash off body bronzers. My first foray into this product category was with the coveted Body Bling by Scott Barnes (recap here – well worth the read). Since then, I realized that I can live without the sun, without fake and baking, without orange skin or unfortunate streaks, yet still have that beautiful, envious sun-kissed bronzed glow… all over. And as I always say, the best part is that it’s a one night commitment. Wear it for the evening and wash it off before bed. After all, some days a tan suits your look while other days a tan may look a little too Jersey Shore.

But it’s no secret that a little color in the golden color spectrum tends to make a woman feel healthier, even skinnier. Add some shine for longer limbs, a little shimmer to reflect light and draw added attention to specified body parts and you’ve got a recipe for sexiness. Now, I ask, can your average tan do all of this?

Here, a list of my current favorite wash off body bronzers:

Per-fekt Matte Body Perfection Gel Tan ($48 for 4 fl. oz.) – If you prefer a matte look, then this is the body bronzer for you! With Hyaluronic microspheres, ceremides, and shea butter, this wash-off body bronzer evens skin tone and helps firm and tone while giving you a slight bronze hue.

Charlotte Ronson A Summer’s Kiss Face and Body Glow ($18 for 3 fl. oz.) – This body bronzer is a bit thicker in consistency and what I like to do is add some of my favorite body oil to thin it out (loving Ren Moroccan Rose Otto Ultra-Nourishing Body Oil) . Not only will the coverage be greater but also a little shine doesn’t hurt to get toned looking legs and arms.

Hard Candy Glow All The Way ($8) – Infused with 24 karat gold adds a slight translucent shimmer, which I love for a sun-kissed glow. The formula is more cream based as opposed to an oil consistency.

Skinnygirl Body Shimmer ($8) – This is more of a body bronzing oil, but I adore how it looks on the skin – smooth with a light-reflecting shimmer and shine (that, ultimately, slims your limbs). This product offers more glitter than most others, but there are definitely days where a little extra shimmer is just what your legs are calling for.

Jimmy Choo Glittering Perfumed Body Oil ($44 for 3.3 oz.) – This is another body bronzing oil that has a great shimmer. With a sensitive nose, I can do without the overwhelming fragrance, but for toned looking legs, I’ll survive.

PRTTY Peaushun Skin Tight Body Lotion ($36 for 8 fl. oz.) – This was made for supermodels on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Victoria’s Secret. Not only are there different shades to match your own skin tone best, but your skin will look radiant and even (bruises, cellulite and blotchy skin be gone!). It also comes in matte formulas for those who are anti-shimmer.

Scott Barnes Body Bling ($42 for 4 fl. oz.) – This is the ultimate wash-off body bronzer (and JLo approved). It is equal parts color, shine, and shimmer. But be careful wearing white post application as the formula will, no doubt, get on your clothing (although it’s well worth every gawking stare!).

Bathing Beauty: Babi Ahluwalia of Sachin + Babi

By | bathing beauties | One Comment

Babi Ahluwalia is one-half of the design duo that makes up Sachin + Babi. The other half just so happens to be her designer hubby, Sachin Ahluwalia (hence the name of the ready-to-wear contemporary line). With decorative dresses, texturized blouses and beautifully tailored jackets, Sachin + Babi is all about the chicness, all of the time. Celebrities like Emma Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, Drew Barrymore and Kat Sadler are just a few of Hollywood’s fashionistas sporting the designs.

Babi is both beautiful and practical when it comes to her style. Her fashion sense is sophisticated yet comfortable, while her beauty routine is simple and unpretentious. Babi’s chestnut billowing mane, perfect skin tone and soulful eyes round out her unique beauty.

Here, the tools and products that Babi covets:

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1 – Tata Harper Rebuilding Moisturizer – I just love it.  Tara Harper uses all natural ingredients creating a pure and simple product.  The shelf life is short because she does not use preservatives but it is well worth it.
2 – Kiehl’s Lip Balm – A tube of Kiehl’s in your handbag is priceless, especially in winter. The product is simple but the quality and ingredients are so good.
3 – Forest Essentials Moisture Replenishing Bath & Shower Oil Madurai Jasmine & Mogra – You can only purchase this product in India; I love it for its purity and beautiful scent.
4 – Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler – It’s simply the best.
5 – Chanel Lipglossimer  in Wild Rose – It’s such a great pick me up and a very nice indulgence.

What is your all-time favorite product?
Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum . Her commitment to all-natural products is inspiring and she creates a great, clean and pure product.

What product do you buy in bulk?
Forest Essential’s Age Defying Facial Serum and Bath and Shower Oils. I have to buy them in bulk as they are only available in India.

Favorite hair product?
MoroccanOil Hydrating Styling Cream – With all of the blow outs and frequent color, it really rescues my hair!

You moisturize your face with…
Tata Harper Replenishing Nutrient Complex, Serum, and finally her Moisturizer.

Favorite body product?
Right now am loving The Body Shop’s glycerine soap (in bar or liquid form) in their great crisp citrus scent.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
Always slather on a face pack the night before an important day. I like any good replenishing moisture mask from Shahnaz Husain or Kiehl’s Algae Mask depending on what’s in the bathroom cabinet!

Beauty icon you admire?
Maharani Gayatria Devi of Jaipur. She had such regal elegance and a magnetic personality.

We all love a little bling from time to time (some more than others, perhaps). But, how about bling on your face? No, we’re not talking about lip, brow, nose, chin piercings (although a certain beauty writer may or may not have had both an eyebrow and tongue pierce in college). The bling we’re referring to is one of sparkles, sequins and Swarovski crystals. With the holiday’s rapidly approaching, a bit of face bling feels perfectly festive and fitting. How much you wear and where you wear it is entirely up to you.

Here, some photos to get you inspired:

Not interested in fancying up your face? Try the new Dior adhesive eyeliner patches emblazoned with crystals. Obsessed.

The question begs to be asked: would you rock the face bling?

To Shop Or Not To Shop… In-Store Vs Online

By | makeup | 5 Comments

I walked into my neighborhood Sephora today (Lexington Avenue and 57th Street), an activity I usually find relaxing and stimulating, only to be bombarded by rude, impatient shoppers, snappy shopkeepers and a messy display of my beloved cosmetics…. which led me to wonder, is shopping in-store become passe?

Well, I can tell you this, it is not the same experience as it used to be. While the aisles of Sephora used to bring joy to my heart and a smile to my face, while they now bring frustration and angst. The place is (for the most part) a mess, the fellow shoppers are gabbing away on cell phones, pushing into you as they stick their soiled fingers into products and the makeup artists don’t seem too thrilled to be there. So, what are the pros of shopping in-store when I could just as easily be in the comfort (and quiet) of my own home making a purchase online?

In-store allows you to physically try a product. BUT, so many products aren’t available in-store anymore yet they are available ONLINE. And most online destinations do have incredible return policies.

In-store gives you the ability to ask another living human being/ makeup artist/ expert a question regarding a specific product BUT in this technological age, you can get countless reviews and expert advise just by googling a product!

So, I have decided that from here on out – all of my beauty shopping will be done online. Better selection, more rare gems available, less noise, more comfort.

Here are some of my favorite online beauty destinations:

Flawless Summer Skin

By | Uncategorized | 2 Comments

In the constant quest for perfect skin, I’ve discovered that there are a few necessary products one must always have in their beauty arsenal.

For starters, a tinted moisturizer is vital. It evens out the skin tone and provides a slight hint of hydration back to your skin. I use Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer in Sand.

I use a concealer to cover blemishes. Rule of thumb, pick a color one shade lighter than your skin. I’m loving Clinique Line Smoothing Concealer in 04.

Foundation is great for full coverage. I like it for night, it can be a little too thick and noticeable for day.  Make Up For Ever HD Foundation in 140 is AMAZING for flawless coverage. It’s meant for HD cameras so it covers completely without flaking. It looks like second skin. Regardless of what you choose, make sure it’s a foundation that doesn’t clump or crease. And, most importantly, it’s trial and error. Find one that matches your shade of skin!

What have you bought lately?
