Skin: Transitioning from Summer to Fall

Fashion changes according to season. In summer, the weather calls for tank tops and opened-toed shoes. Come fall, it’s all about sweaters and ballet flats.

The same is true for your skin care routine. Each season, your needs change. Summer is hot and humid, so a heavy moisturizer is not needed, but perhaps blotting papers and products that combat oil are. By the time Fall hits, temps drop, skin becomes more dehydrated (especially coming off of Summer and tanned skin) and you must adjust accordingly.

I asked pur~lisse skin care founder, Jennifer Yen*, to dish on how to make this transition and divulge what products every woman needs to own for Fall (plus a DIY recipe for the perfect exfoliator!).

SARAH HOWARD: How does fall effect your skin differently from Summer?
JENNIFER YEN: After Summer, fun in the sun can take a toll on the skin, leaving skin dehydrated and uneven from exposure to the sun’s rays. Fall skincare is all about hydrating and repairing skin from the Summer months.

SH: How do you change your skin care regimen from summer to fall?
JY: You may notice that your skin changes with the season: oily skin turns more normal and normal skin becomes drier. That’s why it’s important to use a soap-free, sulfate-free facial cleanser that doesn’t strip skin of natural oils while taking off dirt and makeup. To maintain healthy skin, proper moisturizing is key, regardless of skin type. For dryer skin, use a serum to boost moisture.

SH: What do you need to take extra special care of? why?
JY: Exfoliating is important: never over exfoliate sensitive skin, once every 8-14 days is sufficient. Avoid harsh physical exfoliants such as nuts, shells, and harsh crystals. Instead, mix ½ cup of sugar with olive oil to exfoliate skin and bind moisture to the skin. Rinse with warm water then apply freshly squeezed lemon juice (AHA’s naturally and gently exfoliates) with a cotton pad. Leave on for 5-7 minutes, then moisturize.

SH: What is important to add to fall facial care?
JY: Don’t eliminate SPF from skincare regimen because Summer is over. Protecting skin from the sun is always important, regardless of skin type. Use a non-comedogenic SPF that is free of parabens and fragrance. Keep in mind, the higher the SPF, the more irritating it can be for sensitive skin. SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 blocks 98%.

SH: What’s the most important fall skin product?
JY: A Serum! Serums are rich in anti-oxidants and they nourish and hydrate to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. They also boost moisture to skin and deliver essential nutrition. Serums can be used alone or under a moisturizer. pur~lisse pur~youth preserve serum is a perfect choice as it doesn’t irritate sensitive skin.

SH: What are your top 5, must-have skin care products?
JY: 1 – Pur~delicate, a gentle soymilk cleanser and makeup remover. It’s soap & sulfate free and perfect for my sensitive skin, takes away all my makeup and doesn’t leave me parched or dry!

2 – Pur~protect spf 30. I’m obsessed with protecting my skin from the sun while staying moisturized. This 2-in-1 lightweight anti-aging moisturizer and sunscreen contains a powerful antioxidant complex of peptides, vitamin E, soy proteins and White Tea, it’snon-greasy, non-whitening and layers invisibly underneath your makeup!

3 – C.O. Bigelow Lemon Body Cream– extremely hydrating, fresh but not greasy. Leaves skin silky smooth and moist.

4 – Pure Fiji Coconut Sugar Scrub. I love the smell of this scrub. The sugar really exfoliates while the coconut oil deeply moisturizers and isn’t greasy.

5 – Kneipp Almond Blossom Gentle Body Wash. This is gentle and moisturizing on my skin and it has a nice, nourishing scent.

SH: What is the one product you would recommend to everyone for fall?
JY: pur~youth preserve age delay skin serum (pictured below). This serum does it all and is perfect for seasonal transition. It’s anti-oxidant rich and helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, boosts moisture and leaves skin radiant. It can be used alone for (normal skin) or layered with a moisturizer (more dry skin).
