Nails: Award Season Trends With Deborah Lippmann
There are few people who work a nail like Deborah Lippmann, celebrity manicurist and founder of the eponymous nail care line. I had the opportunity to speak with Deborah about award season trends, who gives great tips, and the must-have shade of the season.
SARAH HOWARD: What are the top nail trends for award season 2013?
DEBORAH LIPPMANN: I think that we’re going to see white like Anne Hathaway wore at the Golden Globes. We’ll also see reds and deep corals, blush, soft, almost pastel peach, nude with a soft illuminating shimmer that catches the light, and gold.
SH: Who had the best tips at the golden globes?
DL: I liked the shades that each of the women I worked with wore. Michelle Dockery was wearing a golden frost shimmer, that was neutral yet had a strong presence (Nefertiti). Stacy Keibler wore such a classic dress, and paired it with a modern mauve hue called Modern Love. I think that mauve is the new nude – it’s a chic and fashion-forward way to wear nude. Rachel Weisz was wearing Lady Is A Tramp, a classic sanguine red. Everything about her look was inspired by Old Hollywood glamour, with a modern flare. Rather than a classic Old Hollywood red for her nails we went more modern which was paired with a berry lip shade that wasn’t an exact match but coordinated perfectly.
SH: How can we wear these trends at home?
DL: The most important thing is to start with a proper manicure so that the nails are the same length and shape, and cuticles are pushed back. Be sure to use base coat and top coat. You want a super sturdy base coat and top coat that offer protection and quick dry time – I like my Gel Lab set.
SH: What shape is on trend for winter 2013?
DL: I’m still enjoying the stiletto nail, or a slightly longer almond shape. It’s starting to become more popular. The shape is very slenderizing, quite sexy and strong.
SH: What is the one must have color of the season?
DL: Strong nudes such as my modern mauve, Modern Love. You could also pair a nude of choice with an iridescent lacquer like Diamonds and Pearls over it.
