Lips: Pretty In Pink
There are two types of lips that women tend to go for: bare, or better yet, barely there, which can include nudes and sheer mauves, and bold, which run the gamut from crimson red to electric purple.
And then there’s pink. I’m not talking about last spring’s highlighter pink trend. I’m talking feminine pink, a color I have dubbed “pretty pink”: It’s universal, classic yet contemporary, easy to wear, and pairs well with a dark eye or a light eye. If you’re a child of the 80s, chances are you saw your mom’s pout painted in some version of the “pretty pink” shade (my mother wore a shimmery pink by Clinique – it’s the only lipstick I ever remember her using).
“Pretty pink” is a hue that can be worn in every season for any reason – day or night, to the office or the bar. It spans the color spectrum from baby pink to bedroom pink (a more concentrated version of the sheer, baby pink, bedroom pink contains a hint of coral – read more about it here), stopping just shy of neon. Celebrities have long been fans of the “pretty pink” shade: Kate Bosworth, Angelina Jolie, and Taylor Swift are just a few who wear it well.
You want to wear “pretty pink” when you’re looking to pack more punch than a nude, but you don’t want to overpower the rest of your makeup. Why wear “pretty pink”? Because it softens any look, giving it a touch of pure femininity. And the boys love a pink pout – it reminds them of innocence!
Here, a few “pretty pinks” worth purchasing:
Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss in Love – Speaking of Angelina, it’s been reported that this hue is one of the actress’s favorites. A glossy, baby pink that adds light color and luxurious shine with a dash of shimmer.
Shu Uemura Tint in Sakura Creme – a straight-up petal pink lip and cheek stain that offers a matte effect for long-lasting coverage. Think cake batter pink.
Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Rose Tricheuse – A medium bright, full bodied rosy bedroom pink shade that works as both a sheer gloss and a pigmented stain.
Dolce & Gabbana Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipstick in Lily – A light, baby pink hybrid of matte and gloss (thanks to the high-shine gloss center).
Tarte LipSurgence Matte Lip Tint in Lucky – A light, baby pink matte lip crayon that glides on with ease and gives the pout hours of pure color.
Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 in Petal – One of my personal favorites, this moisturizing tinted lip balm gives hydration and color in a medium bodied, creamy, petal pink shade.
