How To: Sweat Proof Your Beauty Routine

Just when you think the weather is cooling off, another heatwave is on the horizon. Are you feeling the heat – and humidity? While humidity can do wonders for your skin – like plumping up those oh-so-fine lines – it can also present itself as a real buzz kill for makeup and hair. Think: oily scalp, greasy skin, and makeup that literally slides off of your face. But there is hope — and a few products that can help you save face (and hair) regardless of the climate. Waterproof and sweat proof products are the antidote to these scorchingly hot and humid temps.

Here, a few tips and products that will get you through the final stretch off summer.

Hair:

Sweat proof your beauty routine by starting with your tresses. Cool off and combat the sweat and heat by wearing your hair out of your face and off of your neck in a braid, chignon, or pony (check out our braids post here). But you can also try these 2 great products for scalp oil control (oh, and they both contain mint as an active ingredient. Mint is a natural cleanser.):

Aveda’s Rosemary Mint Shampoo is great for a deep clean yet it’s subtle enough for daily use. Adds body to fine and limp hair by getting rid of all that gunk, oil, and buildup… and it won’t strip color! I use it about times a week (more frequently now that it is so hot and sweaty). It’s what I like to call, my “Sunday night” shampoo (after a long week of product buildup, Sundays are reserved for deep cleanings and fresh starts)!

Biolage’s Cooling Mint Oil Control Treatment is a pretty incredible product, like nothing I’ve ever used before. It’s meant to balance oil secretion by actually reducing the amount of oil that your scalp produces. It’s a wet spray that applies directly to the scalp, and it will make your hair wet at first. But once it dries, it really does “suck up” the excess oils. This is the perfect summer product for sweaty day-to-night activity when there just isn’t enough time to wash your hair before hitting the town. A little spritz, and you’re good to go – refreshed and oil-free!

Face:

A primer will save your face, literally. You can use it on bare skin or add makeup. The primer is meant to control shine and keep makeup put for hours longer. Try Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector. It comes in two shades and Invisible Bright for all over brightening. The natural-looking matte finish lasts up to 8 hours and will give you a virtually flawless complexion. Pores appear more than 50% smaller-instantly, and the formula resists sweat and humidity. The best!

When it comes to cheeks and lips, you’ll want to go with a stain. Glosses will literally sweat right off of your lips, creating a gooey situation. And the same will happen with a cream blush. Stains are waterproof, sweat proof, humidity proof and smudge proof. For a great, multitasking stain, try Becca’s Beach Tint. I love, love, love these colorful stains. They come in 8 wearable summer shades and look just as good on lips as they do on cheeks. Plus, it’s two products for the price of one! Watermelon, a bright pink, is my favorite. For lips, I also adore the By Terry Aqualip Jelly Tint Water Rouge Gel Lip Reviver. It’s the perfect pink for sumer and it’s waterproof, sweat proof and gives the pout an extra plump.

Virtually every cosmetic’s company makes a waterproof mascara so pick your favorite mascara and buy the waterproof version. This will save you from raccoon eye — and, should you be so inclined to swim with a little extra flutter to your lashes, go for it. If you’re unsure about a good waterproof mascara, try Trish McEvoy High Volume. It creates water-resistent tubes around your lashes for high volume, doesn’t smudge, and, as the company claims, it’s better than waterproof because the formula lasts 24 hours!

If you’re still feeling sweaty, grab some blotting papers. They work wonders to absorbs excess oil, rid the face of perspiration and diminish shine. Clean and Clear’s Oil Absorbing Sheets are a handy on-the-go pick-me-up for shiny, sweaty faces. I like them because they won’t remove your makeup and they fit nicely into a purse. An added bonus: they don’t make my skin break out!

We know it’s hot… and humid… and obtrusively sweaty… so, stay cool, stay calm, stay sweat proof.
