How To Get Your Glow: Highlighters Worth The Hype

No, highlighting isn’t a new beauty craze, but with contouring taking a back-seat for summer, highlighting is really stepping up its game. After all, that lit-from-within glow that everyone’s desperately trying to achieve? Well, if it’s not genetic, chances are some great skincare products (more on these later) and a few trusty highlighters are involved. From liquids to creams to powders, there’s a highlighter for every occasion. Now the only issue is which one to buy. We break down our favorites below.

Liquid highlighters are great for adding to a moisturizer or foundation and creating an all-over glow. We first fell in love with the liquid highlighter from Burberry Beauty: Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base. It gives off the slightest golden shimmer and it’s kind of like a halo in a bottle. These days, all the brands are creating liquid formulations…and with more metallic finishes, so you can really wear your shimmer. Two to try are Flesh Ripe Flesh Glisten Drops (it comes in four shades, but we’re loving Whipser, a rose gold hue) and Marc Jacobs Beauty Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter in the limited-edition color Fantasy, another warm rose gold. Recap on why we’re partial to rose gold highlighters here.

Cream highlighters are our favorite for spot treating areas that require extra illumination, like brow and cheek bones, bridge of nose, cupid’s bow, and décolletage. Hourglass’s new Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick is creamy and striking in its shimmer, and it comes in five colors from champagne (pictured) to bronze. Try the bronze on cheeks as a summer blush. Glossier’s cult-favorite Haloscope comes in three shades, from a pearly white to a sun-kissed gold (pictured). The center is filled with healthy skin ingredients that add an extra dose of dew. The Flesh Touch Flesh Highlighting Balms are also formulated with skin-loving oils that offer shimmer and sheen, and they come in four fun shades, from Startle a pearlescent white to Squeeze, a dark bronze. We’ve been using Twitch (pictured), a coppery-gold that gives the skin a sun-kissed look. Wander Beauty’s Catch The Light Highlighter and Glowtion Duo is a liquid lotion and a cream stick highlighter all in one convenient tube. The shade is a pink-champagne, and the pearl pigments give off a natural, you-but-better glow.

Powders are your finishing touch. You can layer them over liquids and creams to add dimension, or just play with powder by dusting over areas of your face that you want illuminated, like cheekbones, bridge of nose, and even the center of the forehead. Lilac/ lavender had a moment, and it was glorious. Becca’s Limited Edition Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Lilac Geode (pictured) gives the faintest hint of pink shimmer and the formula blends seamlessly with liquids and creams. The Nars Highlighting Powders come in six shimmering shades, from Albatross, a white-gold (pictured) to St. Barths, a warm bronze which can also double as a blush or (very) shimmery bronzer. Smahshbox makes a metallic gold highlighter that is literally like melted metal with a burst of rosiness: Smashbox + Vlada Petal Metal Highlighter (pictured). Flesh makes an all-over highlighter called Flesh to Flesh Highlighting Powder in Rise (pictured) that looks super bronzey, but actually dusts on as a light golden shimmer.
