How To Get Better Skin: Sulfur

After an unpleasant but effective prescription of sulfur wash cleared up a lingering case of Tinea Versicolor last summer, it was safe to say curiosity around this particularly smelly mineral was officially piqued.  It worked so quickly and effectively, one couldn’t help but wonder what else sulfur could do.

This wonder-mineral is a mild antiseptic that can cure a variety of skin conditions from rosacea to keratosis pilaris.  Why?  Well, that’s thanks to its keratolytic (shedding of skin) and antimicrobial properties. Besides that unfortunate rash situation, it has become arguably one of our favorite ingredients for acne treatment.  Unlike some of its counterparts such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, sulfur works at clearing acne flare-ups without completely drying the surrounding area.  That means less flaking and less irritation.

Looking to solve some skin woes once and for all with sulfur?  Here is what we recommend:

Formulated specifically for adult acne, Kiehl’s Breakout Control Target Acne Spot Treatment ($28) dries out a nasty pimple within one or two nights.  Better yet, it blends evenly into the skin so that you don’t have to go to bed with visible dots all over your face (unless your significant other is into that look, of course.) We also love the addition of Vitamin B3 to soothe.

When that time of the month rolls around for us ladies, Grandpa’s Brands Thylox Acne Treatment Soap ($6) is a must.  It may be zero frills and not exactly a luxurious cleansing experience, but it seriously helps keep hormonal acne at bay.  Chocolate cravings…not so much.

If you’re dealing with enlarged pores, blackheads, or serious oil, try sleeping in Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clarifying Colloidal Sulfur Mask ($42).  It works while you sleep to draw out sebum, pollutants, impurities, and bacteria from your skin.

One of the most gentle yet effective acne-fighting products on the market, Mario Badescu Special Cucumber Lotion ($15) has been a staple since high school. It gets to work at refreshing and disinfecting without drying and irritating your visage. Better yet, it actually smells rather pleasant!

Sometimes your pores want a deep, foaming cleanse.  Caolin Pore Blackhead Steam Foam Cleanser ($23) heats up when applied to skin, immediately smoothing and refining without causing that dreaded tight feeling that overly harsh detergents tend to give.
