Trend Alert: Vampy Lips

Trend Alert: Vampy Lips

Holidays, Award Season, shorter days and longer nights… all lead to the need for some serious drama. And a quick fix to an otherwise blah makeup look is a colorful lip. While classic red is, well, classic (and, of course, timeless), this winter brings the desire for something a bit spicier: a moody, vampy lip. Also known as the gothic look, which can be attributed to the ‘80s and ‘90s grunge scene — and its 2016 resurgence — but way chicer (and more wearable).

Yes, we’ve seen this brooding red in varying shades of vampiness in years’ past, but, like fashion (and history, for that matter) beauty trends have a way of repeating themselves — and this is one lip look worthy of a second – and third – wear.

This season’s moody, vampy shades run the gamut, and there’s a color for everyone. From deep red with hints of bordeaux for the more subdued version of this trend. Think of this shade as your Old Hollywood glam slam, as seen on Lily Collins, above. Then there’s a berry or aubergine with a dab of black, a la the vamp creme de la creme. Think Dior’s 2016/ 2017 FW runway pout. And then, of course, there’s the all black everything. Literally, just a dramatic black pout. This is fierce, but not for the faint of heart. It’s girl gone gothic girl, straight from 1996.

Create your own vampy lip color by mixing your go-to red with a sheer black, like Lipstick Queen’s Black Lace Liquid Rabbit ($24), the ideal consistency for layering to create a mysterious, moody black cherry (which the brand describes as a “smokey veil”).
