Weekly Must-Have: Tatcha Balanced Pore Perfecting Water Gel

By | skin | No Comments

Combination and oily skin types have (finally) met their (moisturizing) match. Tatcha Balanced Pore Perfecting Water Gel ($68) is the ideal moisturizer to balance combination, oily, and shiny complexions while still providing a healthy, dewy glow. READ: THIS PRODUCT WILL NOT GIVE YOU A MATTE APPEARANCE. And FYI, matte isn’t really trending for summer (see here for proof).

Why we like it: Tatcha’s Balanced Pore Perfecting Water Gel is lightweight and refreshing. The formula almost feels (and smells) like water. But the coolest part about this product is that it contains specks of 23-karat gold to offer instant shimmer. Like a very subtle highlight for the entire face, basking in an ethereal glow, without the shine. Japanese wild rose tightens pores while Japanese dokudami and leopard lilly diminish shine and the appearance of blemishes.

As us combination and oily skin folk know, it’s difficult to find a product that will balance oil and shininess without totally mattifying the skin. Well, this product does it! The complexion looks so healthy and dewy (in all the right places) after application, it truly is like the best Instagram filter.

One word to describe Tatcha’s Balanced Pore Perfecting Water Gel: Obsessed.

Fall Moisturizers For Every Skin Type

By | skin | 4 Comments

It’s inevitable that the fall and winter climate will lead to dry skin – cracked lips, calloused hands and a dull complexion. Hydrating from the inside – drinking 6-8 glasses of water (try hot water infused with lavender, basil or even orange!) – will significantly help, but there isn’t a cure all for the plight of dry skin. Well, except moisturizing… a lot. An ordinary moisturizer will give you momentary relief, an extraordinary moisturizer will give you beautiful skin all season.

There are hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of face moisturizers on the market. It’s really about finding what’s right for you. Trial and error. Here are our suggestions for the best moisturizers for every skin type:

Normal – Normal skin is classified as not too dry, not too oily, and not too sensitive. You have few pores, an even skin tone, and little to no redness. You’ll want your moisturizer to keep your PH balance on par, and infuse hydration into the skin.

Moisturizers to Try:
Eminence Guava & Bamboo Age-Defying Moisturizer ($58) – I am a huge fan of the Eminence product range. The ingredients are healthy and the products are reliable. This particular moisturizer is great for normal skin that also wants added anti-aging benefits. Bamboo hydrates while guava increases cell turnover. A mix of antioxidants, vitamins and proteins protect, firm and brighten the complexion.
Epicuren Colostrum Cream ($80) – This lotion like cream will brighten and hydrate your skin with its impressive blend of ingredients such as kukui, avocado, seaweed protein extract, and bitter orange. Colostrum aids in building strong and healthy skin cells while evening skin tone. The citrus scent is merely a bonus!

Combination – Combination skin can have areas of oily (mainly the T-Zone) and areas of dry. You may be prone to breakouts and dry patches… it’s kind of like the worst of both worlds. Your moisturizer should neutralize dryness without causing breakouts.

Moisturizers to Try:
Arcona Magic White Ice ($40) – A gel/ cream moisturizer packed with hyaluronic acid, vitamins B-5, C and E, anti-microbial totara extract, and grapefruit complex to moisturizer, neutralize and clarify. This formula gives combination skin a run for its money, combatting both dryness and shine.
Sunday Riley Adrenaline Anti-Aging Gel Cream ($185) – This is one of my favorite moisturizers (my skin is somewhere between combination and oily/ acne prone) because the consistency is thick yet it doesn’t leave a greasy residue. In fact, my skin soaks up the abundance of natural ingredients like rosehip seed and pomegranate seed oils. It also provides incredible anti-aging benefits… without making you break out!

Oily/ Acne Prone – Oily skin is marked by excessive shine, enlarged pores, and, in some cases, acne. While most people with oily skin tend to skip moisturizer, this can actually make your skin more oily. You don’t want to dry out an oily complexion, instead find a moisturizer that offers hydration without added emollients like mineral oil. A mattifying moisturizer, or a product with acne-fighting ingredients is ideal.

Moisturizers to Try:
Ayur-Medic Clearifying Cream, for Oily to Acne Skin ($49) – This is one of the best moisturizers for oily/ acneic skin. It won’t make you break out, thanks to a healthy dose of salicylic acid, yet it doesn’t dry you out. The oil-free formula reduces inflammation while it hydrates and promotes a clear complexion.
Antonia Burrell Pure Therapy Facial Serum ($95) – My friend is the co-owner of Shen Beauty, a wonderfully curated beauty store in Brooklyn. Upon returning to NYC from a trip, I suffered a terrible breakout. She gave me this product, swearing that it would clear up my complexion… and it did! While the product is an oil (crazy, I know), it contains a special blend of 21 pure plant extracts that heal, disinfect, purify, refine and balance sebum production. I love this stuff!

Dry – Dry skin can be mistaken as sensitive, but the primary concern of someone with dry skin is a lack of moisture. This can lead to redness, itching and visible cracks or lines. Your moisturizer should be chock full of vitamins, essential oils and anti-aging ingredients.

Moisturizers to Try:
Weleda Skin Foods ($19) – I’ve dubbed this the “affordable La Mer” as it is a wonderfully rich balm that heals even the most dehydrated skin. A delightful combination of essential fatty acids, Vitamin E, organic rosemary, pansy and calendula nourish, protect and repair.
La Prairie Cellular Time Release Moisturizer ($180) – My mom suffers from dry skin and this is her absolute favorite moisturizer. This rich, soothing cream has a time-release delivery system that continues to hydrate for 16 hours! While it’s definitely and investment, your complexion will most certainly thank you.

Sensitive – Sensitive skin can be painful, marked by red splotches and inflammation. Basically, sensitive skin is allergic skin. Steer clear of fragrances, harsh ingredients and drying agents. Your moisturizer should be gentle and mild.

Moisturizers to Try:
Simple Skincare Replenishing Rich Moisturizer ($13) – The entire line is formulated for sensitive skin and is made without dyes, artificial perfumes or harsh irritants. This moisturizer combines vitamin B5 with Allantoin, glycerin, and bisabolol to nourish and soothe.
Pai Chamomile and Rosehip Sensitive Skin Cream ($36) – An amazing moisturizer for even the most sensitive skin. Rosehip, Matricin, and Azulene repair and soothe, while chamomile calms and antioxidants and Omegas 3, 6, 7 and 9 hydrate.

Smooth Legs For Spring: Chantecaille Retinol Body Treatment

By | body | 2 Comments

All anyone can seem to talk about is “royal this” and “royal that.” So, in light of the Royal Wedding taking place on Friday, I thought I’d share a royal body treatment: Chantecaille Retinol Body Treatment with Rose and Edelweiss.

Now, I don’t remember ever being particularly keen on Chantecaille products before – I’ve definitely tried a lipstick or a blush here and there – but wasn’t so obsessed that I took to this blog to write about it. Well, ladies, I may have to retry the goods because this body lotion is pure bliss.

Not only does the Retinol Body Treatment smell like roses (a personal favorite scent for any body treatment), but it also has the consistency of milk and is so refreshing drenched all over the skin. My body looks and feels ions healthier post application. It literally glows from within and it hydrates even the driest of skin (I know this firsthand because this is the lotion I’ve been using post Mexican sun – and it’s been a life saver!).

A word (or several…) from the company:
“A transformative body cream that is the first to use active nano-encapsulated retinol in a 24-hour delivery system to radically improve skin’s texture without causing irritation. Heals and smoothes uneven dry patches.”

It’s true love, a royal treatment for my royal skin. I feel nothing short of a princess after use (finding my prince, well, that’s an entirely separate blog post….).

PRICE TAG: $92.00 for 6.8 oz (granted, it comes with a rather royal-size price tag as well, but it’s worth every penny).

Spring Fling: Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream

By | skin | 2 Comments

Yes, another Spring post. Hey, they say Spring’s on its way. Here’s to wishful thinking…

While Spring gives way to lighter jackets and open-toed shoes, it also sparks change in your beauty regimen. Winter is harsh on your skin. Spring is a bit nicer. Then Summer kicks face again.

Kiehl’s is celebrating the changing of season’s with the launch of a new skin cream – Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream. It’s a super-rich, incredibly luxe formula that will nourish, reactivate and regenerate your skin by “waking up” skin cells to regenerate healthier looking skin. Like Spring itself, life reforms.

The story behind the formula is like the change from winter to spring: ” a flower that has the physiological and structural strategy to minimize water loss such that it can dry out completely and survive periods of dryness during unfavorable conditions for up to 31 months as an environmental survival strategy.  Then, when the optimal growth conditions arise, the plant resumes normal growth within hours, with only a few drops of moisture, and is restored in one to two days.”

Rosa Artica is thick in consistency and a little goes a long way so no need to overdue. It’ll definitely hydrate and, even for someone like me with moderate oily skin, it moisturized without turning my face greasy. But the part I loved most of all was how wonderfully glowing my skin looked after a night’s sleep in the cream. Remarkable. My skin seemed to soak the “Resurrection Flower” right up!

The Cream in Statistics:

Rosa Arctica is scientifically proven to:

 •           Retain moisture for smoother, healthier skin

•           Increase cell vitality to accelerate key processes necessary for healthy skin function (proven by decrease of the enzyme LDH)

•           Trigger skin’s own natural restoration process to stimulate collagen and elastin production

•           Defend from future aging by protecting skin from environmental stressors, water loss and oxidation from free radicals

Key skin benefits from our consumer test:

•           Helps to minimize the appearance of lines, increase firmness and elasticity, and smooth overall texture of skin.

•           91% stated their skin appeared revitalized and rejuvenated*

•           93% said skin felt denser and thicker*

Extra Moisture Surge

Finding the perfect moisturizer can be a difficult task indeed. What your skin needs for the winter is not necessarily what it needs during the summer months.

I’ve discovered a great basic that can be used year round. CellCeuticals CerActive Active Moisture + Barrier Repair Skin Treatment is an amazing bonus to any moisturizer. You can use it provide long lasting hydration and apply alone or in conjunction with another moisturizer. It leaves my skin feeling soft, smooth and hydrated.

A word (or several…) from the company:

“This moisture and barrier repair treatment replenishes essential barrier lipids (ceramides and fatty acids), humectants and anti-irritants to help strengthen skin’s water-lipid barrier while providing deep hydration and skin-soothing properties.”

This moisturizer is suitable for all types of skin and is the perfect dose of something extra for days when a little more hydration is needed. Alternatively, you can use by itself if your skin is only in slight need of moisture. I use it alone, after I wash my face and before my eye cream. I love the way it leaves my skin glowing.

Winter Skincare Tips From Ole Henriksen

By | skin | No Comments

There’s no denying that winter weather is brutal on the skin. But hey, it’s part of the cycle. Ole Henriksen, skincare guru and founder of the OLEHENRIKSEN skincare line and the shares his tips for weatherproofing your skin against the cold season:

1 – When showering have the water temperature be pleasantly warm, but not hot. Hot water is very drying on skin.

2 – Avoid using a body brush with sharp bristles in cold weather because it will strip your skin of its natural oils. For exfoliation, the key is to use a body scrub that thoroughly removes dead and dry skin cells, while leaving your skin feeling soft and hydrated, such as the OLEHENRIKSEN rub n’ buff salt scrub.  Apply by wetting your entire body and then turn off your water. Massage the scrub into your skin in long, soothing, yet firm motions. By avoiding any running water during the activation of the scrub, you maintain the density of the formulation, while not wasting any product by seeing it run down the drain.

3 – After showering, give your skin an added boost of moisture, by applying an extremely thin layer of a body oil, such as the OLEHENRIKSEN lavender body oil, prior to applying body lotion. It will add luminosity and ensure skin remains moist and nourished around the clock.

4 – Your hands also require special attention in cold weather.  At night, exfoliate hands with a scrub followed by an application of hand cream.  It will leave your hands and cuticles feeling incredibly soft.

5 – When you cleanse your skin, regardless of skin type, it is very important that you use luke warm water as opposed to hot water. That is the first step toward guarding your complexion against unnecessary dryness. Activating your cleanser with a soft, round flat vegetable sponge is a great way to gently eliminate any dead skin cells, and get circulation going. Avoid thick face clothes, since they don’t glide gracefully across the face and neck, and often have a coarse texture.

6 – Using creams that contain higher concentrations of essential fatty acids is the best way to maintain a soft and glowing complexion in even the coldest of environments. Oils like sunflower seed, grapeseed, black currant, hazelnut, avocado, sesame, almond and wheat germ all have a high content of essential fatty acids and are known for their ability to comfort, soothe and protect skin. Fats do not freeze in cold weather, unlike water and water based extracts, so they will help maintain a velvety skin texture and prevent capillary breakage.

PRODUCT TO TRY: Ole Henriksen Vitamin Plus – a light weight, heavy hydrating moisturizer packed with all types of antioxidant goodies. $35.00

Summer Moisture: Amore Pacific Moisture Bound Refreshing Hydra-Gel

By | skin | 3 Comments

A common misconception is that you don’t need to hydrate your skin in the summer months. FALSE. Skin always needs moisture. Period. While it may not need the same heavy duty moisturizers you use during winter — those can go into hibernation with cashmere sweaters and knee high boots — it still needs a bit of, shall we say, a refreshment.

That’s why I’m loving the Amore Pacific line. I love it as my winter moisturizer and I now love it as my summer moisturizer too! The Moisture Bound Refreshing Hydra-Gel is a weightless, light, oil-free gel-cream texture that leaves skin refreshed, balanced and hydrated.

The consistency is the most amazing part. It feel cool and refreshing on the skin and leaves the face soft and glowing. A little goes a long way so no need to overdue. As per all of the Amore Pacific products, the smell is so fresh and inviting, it leaves your face feeling fresh and completely revitalized. This product can be used on all skin types, even oily skin tones (yes, oily skin still needs moisture!).

A word (or several…) from the company:

“Bamboo sap, revered throughout the ages as “divine water,” is rich in minerals that stimulate the skin, amino acids that boost hydration, and sacharrides that energize skin cells. Used in lieu of distilled water. BioGF1K Complex™, a patented red ginseng complex, delivers the most active compounds of red ginseng which can be absorbed by the skin; provides antioxidant protection against free radicals and anti-aging benefits which boost elasticity and firmness.”

A favorite among makeup artists to prime the skin before makeup application, Glee’s Lea Michele is also a fan. She was just spotted receiving a facial in the Amore Pacific Beauty Gallery & Spa in Soho. I’ve had a facial there too, and let me tell you, it’s phenom. If you’re in the market for a little pick-me-up, try an Amore Pacific facial. Your skin will never look more radiant.
