Summer Hair: Braids!
Okay, so summer has finally decided to grace us with its presence – and this NYC heat wave is like walking straight into a blowdryer. It’s like we went straight from winter to summer and the pleasant spring weather lasted about 4 days. Alas, global warming is what it is and we have to acclimate accordingly.
Let’s talk hair. Mine is very long and thick and, while the humidity does give it a great natural bounce, it also tends to frizz in such climate. A ponytail or bun works to keep my hair off my face and way from my neck, therefor letting my skin breathe, but it’s not super chic. Instead, I want braids – side braids, braided updos and fishtails. You’ve seen these styles on everyone from Diane Kruger to Emma Watson.
Here are a few of my favorite braided looks for summer:
From the slideshow;
Image 1 – This is the easiest of the bunch. A loose side braid that is equal parts messy and sexy.
Image 2 – Emma Watson’s intricate braided updo is beautiful, although a bit harder to channel on your own.
Image 3 – An oldie but goodie, Blake Lively with a high pony and fishtail. Super easy to do solo. Make sure to give the ponytail height and volume!
Image 4 – Minka Kelly’s inside-out braided updo at the Met, adorned with crystal broaches. Even if you aren’t able to do this look yourself, you can channel the style by making a side braid, twisting into a bun and then adding a bejewled headband, pin or even a flower!
Image 5 – Jessica Alba’s double braids that meet and form a bun is the perfect look for summer – and you can definitely pull this off on your own. Just braid your bangs, attach with a clear rubber band, and pull all of your hair back into a messy, low bun.
Image 6 – Nicky Hilton’s recent milkmaid braid style is a contemporary twist on the classic ‘do – and a pretty way to show off your features while keeping cool. For an easy milkmaid braid tutorial, click here.
