Every season I reluctantly go through my closet and weed out the items I think or hope I can live without. It takes a significant amount of time and an ample amount of self discipline to part with things I had once coveted. Over the years I have established editing rules…one of which is to hold all denim. I never get rid of denim because it is such a classic fabrication. And even denim styles that seem dated one season eventually circle back in vogue. The same is true with chambray, I like to think of it as denim’s sweet drapey cousin. It has a softer hand and is used more often for shirtings, but shares the versatility of denim. The chambray button down once a standard issue uniform for the U.S. Navy through World War II is now a staple piece in countless women’s wardrobes. My Madewell button down gets me through mornings of styling indecision. No matter where I’m going or how I’m feeling this chambray shirt always seems like the suitable choice. Even though denim on denim is trending, I feel the best when I pair my blouse with black or white skinny jeans. I recently finished a major closet overhaul- lugging out shoes, pants and T’s I once treasured….but my denim and chambray remain.
