Cream-Gel Moisturizers

Taking your skin from winter to spring (and then to summer) can prove a difficult task: Breakouts, blotchiness, excess oil secretion are all par for the course. Winter is more drying on the skin, thus it is important to use a thick moisturizer – for face and body. But come hot and humid weather, the heavy creams will only lead to a greasy complexion. While our skin needs hydration year round, as the seasons change, so too must our moisturizers. The cream-gel moisturizer has become quite popular for the warmer (make that, sweatier) months. While a gel consistency is lightweight, the feel of a gel-cream is also very soothing (ideal for post sun exposure) and they absorb quickly while giving your complexion a healthy glow (as opposed to a slick greasy shine from heavy creams).

And here’s an industry trick: For an extra soothing moisturizing experience, leave your cream-gels in the fridge to cool. The formulas lend themselves wonderfully to the benefits of being applied cold. Think of it as a refreshing and hydrating DIY spa treatment for you face.

AMOREPACIFIC ‘Moisture Bound’ Refreshing Hydra Gel ($100) – This has been a staple in my beauty cabinet for a few years now. And come summer, I pull this out of the cabinet and use religiously. It provides the necessary hydration without making my skin look greasy – and it even gives it that coveted  glow.

Chanel Hydra Beauty Gel Creme ($87) – I adore the new Hydra line but if I had to pick a favorite product, it would be the gel creme. Again, it adds the right amount of hydration that instantly absorbs into the skin while leaving my complexion luminous and bright (as opposed to dreary and dull – or overly greasy).

La Mer The Moisturizing Gel Cream ($265) – I have yet to try the gel cream version of the classic La Mer moisturizer, although I have used the cream one on occasion. The company calls this the “ultralight edition of the Creme de la Mer.” I look forward to slathering this gel formula on my visage.

Korres Pomegranate Balancing Cream-Gel Moisturizer ($32) – This cream-gel absorbs into the skin instantly giving a matte finish to the complexion. It’s soothing properties help reduce redness, making this a perfect after-sun moisturizer.

Peter Thomas Roth Laser–Free Regenerator Moisturizing Gel–Cream ($68) – I love the entire PTR laser-free line but since we’re talking cream-gel moisturizers, I thought it perfect to include this amazing anti-aging cream in a soothing, moist gel formula. Don’t let the red color scare you away – it’s made with dragon’s fruit which gives it its crimson hue.

These are great for skin that breaks out too because they are very light and don’t irritate! I really want to try the Korres one, I’ve been using Philosophy.

I would love to know what you think of the la mer gel moisturizer, sounds amazing. I like the cream for when I’m feeling extra dry. Have you tried Clinique moisture surge gel? I use it year round because I manage to get dry in the summer…… Odd.

  3. I love the AmorePacific Hydra Gel–that one is AMAZING! But really pricey. I was curious about the Korres one but still have yet to try it. I LOVE gel-creams, but the last 2 times I’ve tried moisturizers with that consistency (Cerave and Kiehl’s), I’ve broken out SO badly for some reason–so I’ve been a little hesitant.

Perfectly timed article. Have you ever tried putting the gel in the refrigerator for cooling skin on super hot days? Or does this change the composition?
