Author and screenwriter Kirsten Smith – known as “Kiwi” to her inner circle – is just about the coolest writer I know. I’ve long been a fan of her writing and her films like Legally Blonde, She’s The Man and The Ugly Truth, which are female comedies with serious smarts. Her new young adult novel, Trinkets, combines Kiwi’s distinct girl-centric voice with a hilarious plot that will transplant you back to high school – and the drama that comes along with it. With so much girliness in her writing, I was curious to learn how the queen of girl power primps.
Here are the favorite products of one of my real life idols:
What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1. Karite Lips Shea Butter Vanilla Lip Balm – Not too sticky or too slippery. Good for kissing.
2. Shikai Shower Gel (Yuzu) – Great scent, super sudsy and au naturale.
3. 3 Lab Super Eye Treatment – Every pricey eye cream is a gamble but this doesn’t cause any breakouts and also keeps the eye area nice n’ moist.
4. Osmosis Stem Factor Face Serum – So I can be elastically dewy but not shiny.
5. Salon Graffix Hair Spray Extra Super Hold – The glue of all hairsprays. Hairdressers are in awe of its power.
What is your all-time favorite product?
Alba Botanica Body Butter. The texture and thickness of it are concentrated, but it absorbs into the skin quickly so you don’t feel slimy. And of course the yummy smell which has become my trademark scent.
What product do you buy in bulk?
I’m a total hoarder, so I buy all of the above-mentioned things. I even buy toothpaste in bulk. It’s a sickness.
Favorite hair product?
Davines Love Curl Enhancing Shampoo and Conditioner. I have fine, curly hair and this product that I’ve just discovered holds curls without being too heavy. I use the conditioner every day but I only use the shampoo once every three days.
You moisturize your face with…
To wash my face, I use Lancer Skincare Blemish Control Polish to exfoliate, and follow with Lancer Exfoliating Blemish Cleanser. Then begins my “ritual” with Osmosis Skin Care products: Clear Facial Conditioner, then Stem Factor Serum, Renew (an anti-aging with Retinal), Repair healing mud, and I add Quench and Immerse at night for extra moisture.
Favorite body product?
Have I mentioned Alba Botanica body butter yet?
Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
Over-moisturize. You can never be too moist.
Beauty icon you admire?
Madonna was always my idol – she’s so creative and hilarious and stunning and artistic. I collected photos of her from the moment I discovered her as a teenager and covered my room with them. Of course, I don’t have the makeup skills, so my eyeliner ends up looking less like Madonna and more like Courtney Love, but that’s okay because I think sloppy beauty can be sexy too.
