Bathing Beauty: Becka Diamond

By | bathing beauties | 9 Comments

I first met Becka Diamond at a party in New York City. She was DJing (naturally) and wearing a fabulous ensemble that only Becka could pull off. I liked her immediately. Her sweet personality seems to clash with the heavy liner and bleached blonde hair, but then again, Becka is somewhat of an anomaly. When asked to describe herself, Becka says “Becka Diamond is a fictional character best known for her work as a DJ, fashion stylist, curator, photographer, music correspondent, social media enthusiast and, on rare occasion, model. She is a Leo raised in Boston, currently splitting her time between Los Angeles and New York City.”

I’ve always been somewhat envious how Becka is able to “put her face on” night after night. Besides being quite a timely and daunting task, I find it incredibly liberating that Becka can be equal parts grunge and perfectly poised, reminding me of a modern day pin up girl.

I had to ask Becka my favorite beauty question. After all, it’s not every day that a real life character is game to spill her beauty tips.

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1. Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in Finland: This is a new favorite. I love tinted moisturizers. This one goes on super smoothly and creates a sheer, dewy look which I love. I have dry skin, so any extra moisture is appreciated. It also has an SPF 30, which is an added bonus.
2. Make Up For Ever Aqua Black Cream Eye Shadow: This is the product I use to create my extreme cat eye. I apply with an angled brush, painting the shape on. Once it’s set, you could swim in it. Normal liquid liners never last on me. I need bomb-proof. Comes in handy on many-a-late-night out!
3. MAC Lipstick in “Snob”: I’ve been wearing this forever. I love a sixties lip, and this saccharine bubble gum color is my absolute favorite. And it smells like cake.
4. Lush Dusting Powder in Vanilla: This is useful for many reasons, but I mainly use it in my hair. Being platinum, I can douse my head in it to add volume or do second day hair. It’s also great on the skin for getting in and out of vinyl, latex and leather.
5. Eye cream: I kind of have an addiction here. I’m using 3 at the moment. My favorites are from La Mer and Kiehl’s, though.

What is your all-time favorite product?
Abyssine Cream from Kiehl’s. My mom got me hooked on Kiehl’s when I was 12. This cream is moisturizing enough for my dry skin, but doesn’t clog pores or feel heavy on the skin.

What product do you buy in bulk?
False eyelashes. I used to go broke buying them from Shu Uemura and Make Up For Ever, but now I just use those for special occasions. This is one of my guilty pleasures. I know one day I’ll have to quit!

Favorite hair product?
L’Oreal Elnett StrongHold Hairspray. My hair is fine and highly processed, and this is perfect for a bit of teasing ala Brigitte Bardot in Contempt.

You moisturize your face with…
Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Face Serum and Kiehl’s Abyssine Cream, and I also adore Rodin Olio Lusso and it’s Jasmine scent.

Favorite body product?
Nars Monoi Body Glow II. It is super hydrating and gives the skin a pretty sheen.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
I know this sounds simple, but washing your make up off before bed is so important, no matter how tired you are. I love the Neutrogena make up remover wipes for late nights when I don’t want to do a full on face wash. Also, I think good manners are a highly underrated beauty secret.

Beauty icon you admire?
Kate Moss. She’s my all time favorite. Her entire vibe is effortless, and cool while still maintaining a bit of grunge.

*Becka’s most recent endeavor, the site 13:13, blends new underground talent, exclusive music, mixtapes, original editorial and news from the intertwining worlds of music and fashion.

9th Annual Spring Dinner Dance New Year's In April: A Fool's Fete

Bathing Beauty: Nicole Miller

By | bathing beauties | 5 Comments

Designer Nicole Miller has been dressing women with her contemporary clothing for over 25 years. While celebrity fans of her sensual and refined aesthetic include Angelina Jolie, Halle Barry, and Jessica Simpson, Miller’s pieces are often seen inside the editorial pages of fashion magazines. Her collections are inspired by “film imagery and exotic cultures” and her separates showcase her adoration for prints and color. In the real world, Miller’s personality is just as colorful. At a recent dinner party, Miller and I discussed her love for nail polish (she has her favorites) and the need for that signature lipstick shade.  Just like her approach to fashion, Miller’s beauty routine is clean, dynamic and feminine.

Here, Miller discusses her must-have products and the reason she is never without a washcloth:

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1 –  Sisley L26 Lipstick:I love wearing a nude lip — it is an understated, yet sexy look that is easy to wear every day. Sisley L26 is my favorite because it not only lasts long, but it has an amazing satiny texture.
2 – Borghese Nail Polish: I am a self-proclaimed nail fanatic and have a weakness for dark colored polishes; a few years ago my friend gifted me a Borghese nail polish and have been obsessed ever since! The best part about this polish is that it doesn’t chip.
3 – Peter Thomas Roth – Lashes To Die For The Liner: I don’t like spending a ton of time on my make-up, so I am always looking for multi-purpose products. I am hooked on Lashes to Die For Liner because it is extremely easy to apply, never smudges, and also works as a treatment for fuller lashes.
4 – Nicole Miller Glow Serum: I use this glow serum every morning and will not walk out of house without it on. It makes my skin look so fresh – it especially comes in handy after traveling or after a long night out.
5 – Barielle – Love Your Nails Nail Polish Remover Towelettes: I never travel without Barielle towelettes. This nail polish remover is acetone-free, you never have to worry about them leaking in your luggage, and they never dry out. I am obsessed with them! (Can you tell I am a nail fanatic yet?)

What is your all-time favorite product?
Sisley’s Phyto Teint Eclat Foundation. This is hands down the best foundation — the texture is extremely light and oil-free, but offers maximum coverage. It doesn’t leave your face feeling cakey or heavy, and gives your complexion a luminous glow.

What product do you buy in bulk?
Acca Kappa Lip Balm. There’s nothing worse than dry lips, especially when you wear lipstick. I stock up on this minty lip balm to keep my lips soft and hydrated.

Favorite hair product?
Aveda Brilliant Pomade.  I am constantly battling frizz, especially during hot, humid summer weather. This pomade is a life-saver, it always keeps my hair straight and tames frizz.
You moisturize your face with…
Pevonia’s Timeless Repair Cream: This cream, which contains caviar and pearl, helps repair and rejuvenate my skin. Since using this cream there is a visible different in my complexion.

Favorite body product?
Suave Skin Therapy Body Lotion. The body lotion is silky and absorbs quickly into your skin. What more can you ask for in a moisturizer?

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
I always wash my face with a washcloth rather than my hands. I am convinced I get a deeper clean, and love how invigorating my skin feels without the irritation of an exfoliant.

Beauty icon you admire?
Lauren Hutton always looks gorgeous and natural. She embraces her uniqueness, keeping her makeup look minimal to compliment her natural beauty.

Bathing Booty: Bryan Smith of Starworks Artists

By | bathing beauties | 6 Comments

Last week I brought you The Wall Group’s Kim Meyer (refresh your memory here), so I only thought it fair that this week I bring you Bryan Smith Director of Public Relations at Starworks Artists, the equally fabulous and renowned agency representing an elite crop of beauty and fashion experts (Tracey Cunningham, Kate Lee, Molly R. Stern, Mark Townsend, Adir Abergel, Mai Quynh, and fashion styling dream team Emily Current and Meritt Elliott, to name a few). And yes, this is a first for Beauty Banter as we’ve never featured a man in our Bathing Beauty section before (note the title change from Beauty to Bootie, Bryan’s idea – and a good one).

A favorite part of my job is getting the chance to interview talented makeup artists, hair stylists, manicurists, facialists, and the like. Learning their tips and secrets, watching their artistry come alive, and their careers grow is truly a wonderful perk of being a beauty editor. And the men and women behind these talented artists – the agents and publicists that I work with on a daily basis – have grown to be friends. Full disclosure: Bryan is one of my favorites. He’s funny (and it’s hard to be witty over email), he’s quick (which is an attribute that I very much appreciate when working on a deadline), and, most importantly, he has an altruistic love for his job and his clients which is evident – even over email.

So, once again, when it comes to great products, beauty secrets, and insider tips, there really is no one better to ask than the person who has devoted their career to building the career of a beauty industry artist.

Here are Bryan’s favorite beauty products and tools and the ones that he can’t live without.

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1 – Kiehl’s Sun-Free Self-Tanning Formula – 9 to 6 Monday through Friday I’m (grateful to be) trapped at the office, and don’t get to see the outside world as much as I’d like to. This self-tanner is non greasy and gives me the natural glow I’m looking for in about an hour.

2 – Le Labo’s Santal 33 – This fragrance is my jam. Masculine, but not overly so, the mixture of Australian Sandalwood, Papyrus and Cedarwood creates an addictive scent that in some cases has literally drawn people in for a closer whiff.

3 – Diptyque ‘Baies’ Scented Candle – The scent of this candle is perfect. I light it the second I walk in the door every night. It just makes any space feel instantly clean & beautiful.

4 – La Mer’s “The Hand Treatment” – This stuff is GREAT. Super Luxe. I use it almost obsessively.

5 – Marvis Toothpaste Jasmine – Great flavor and a very satisfying texture: Light grit, just enough to scrub, and a great foaming quality – not enough to be soapy, just enough to really clean your mouth.

What is your all-time favorite product?
Moore Unique Razor Rash Relief Bump Eliminator Cream – This product I discovered in a Waco, TX grocery store about 6 years ago and haven’t been without a tube since. I put it on after I shave and it completely prevents irritation. The smell is a bit intense but the effects are worth it & you can’t beat the price at $7.99.

What product do you buy in bulk?
Malin & Goetz Mojito Lip Balm – I have to buy these in bulk because: a) I misplace them constantly; b) I can’t live without them. I’m seriously addicted to this stuff! It’s a super soothing gel that tastes great and provides long-lasting moisture.

Favorite hair product?
I can’t/won’t leave the house without Oribe’s Crème for Style. With it, my hair is always frizz free & stays in place all day without being too stiff.

You moisturize your face with…
La Mer’s Moisturizing Gel Cream – I don’t love heavy cream moisturizers and this one is a lighter weight version of the famous Crème de la Mer. Unfortunately, I’m out right now so I’ve been using Fresh’s Soy Face Cream (which I also love.)

Favorite body product?
Kiehl’s Original Musk Lotion – This moisturizer is lightweight and can be used all over the body. It has such a sexy and rugged scent that lasts for hours.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
Live well – hydrate, sleep, and exercise. And be nice to people.

Beauty icon you admire?
I’m going to have to go with Paul Newman on this one. I realize he isn’t your traditional “Beauty Icon,” but damn that man was beautiful.

KIMMEYER1

Bathing Beauty: Kim Meyer

By | bathing beauties | 12 Comments

I first met Kim Meyer a few years ago when she was working in the PR department at Chanel Beauty (a highly coveted beauty job, indeed). It was a professional relationship filled with press releases and product testing and interviews with Chanel’s esteemed makeup artists. When news spread that Kim was leaving her post at Chanel for a job  as Director of Public Relations for The Wall Group (a well-known and well respected agency that reps beauty pros from makeup artists to manicurists) in LA, my first thought was, “who leaves Chanel?” But since Kim’s move to The Wall Group (and Los Angeles), I’ve actually gotten to know her more on a personal and professional level, and witness first hand, her complete adoration and admiration for the artists whom she works with. And The Wall Group represents some of the greats – from celebrity makeup artists like Fiona Stiles and Pati Dubroff to hair stylists like Thomas Dunkin and David Mallett – and a host of other extremely talented beauty and fashion experts (Amanda Ross, Rachel Zoe, Christophe Robin, to name a few). A job filled with this much daily talent and creativity? I’m envious (almost). I have had the privilege of interviewing so many of these wonderful beauty experts since Kim’s arrival at the Wall Group – and I, a self-proclaimed beauty expert, have learned so much from these wonderfully special men and women.

So, when it came to doing a Bathing Beauty piece on Kim Meyer, it was a no-brainer, really. She’s one of the most knowledgable women working in beauty today. While you may not see her name in glossy magazines and while she may not be the one responsible for the red carpet hair and makeup you are currently obsessing over, she is most certainly the woman behind-the-scenes making it all happen. When it comes to insider tips and industry secrets, Kim is chock-full of them. Here are a few of her favorite products:

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1.Mascara – I am naturally blonde and fair, so without mascara my eyelashes are practically invisible! I won’t even check the mail without mascara. My favorites are CHANEL Inimitable Mascara, and Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara.
2. Body lotion – I am obsessed with moisturizing after the shower! My favorite is Jergens Ultra Healing Extra Dry Skin Moisturizer.
3. Clarisonic Brush – this has changed the way my skin looks. I try to wash my face using it at least once a day.
4. Red nail polish – I used to be a little adventurous with my nail color… But I’ve realized I am most happy with some variety of red. From an orangey red like OPI’s Monsooner or Later, to a true red like Essie’s Bordeaux, to a deep purple-y red like CHANEL’s Vamp. I always have short, clean red nails.
5. Tom Ford Santal Blush Eau de Parfum– I have always been super sensitive to fragrance, and it’s been difficult for me to find one I can’t live without. My good friend Alex Nourafshan gave me Santal Blush for my birthday, and I fell in love with it at first sniff! Not only does it smell amazing, but the packaging is beautiful too.

What is your all-time favorite product?
CHANEL Hydramax + Active Cream.  My friends nicknamed this product “dream cream.”  It’s super hydrating, light weight, and smells delicious.  I’ve been using it daily since it launched, and have turned all my friends and family onto it too.

What product do you buy in bulk?
Aquaphor.  I have little tubes in every one of my bags, and I keep a big one in my bedside drawer.  I am obsessed with hydrated, healthy lips!  It’s also great for really dry rough areas in the winter months – hands, elbows, knees.

Favorite hair product?
Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m slightly obsessed with my hair.  I don’t color my hair, but my friend and hair stylist Jen Atkin turned me on to Fekkai Salon Technician Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s gentle, doesn’t leave behind any product residue, and smells nice.  And of course, I love L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray.  I used to stock up on it when I traveled to Paris – I’m so happy I can find it at Target now!

You moisturize your face with…
CHANEL Hydramax + Active Cream at night, Clarins Extra-Firming Day Lotion & Sunscreen SPF 15 in the morning.  Also, my friend Jeanne Yang recently turned me on to Sunday Riley Juno Tranformative Lipid Serum. I was skeptical of a face oil at first, but after using this product for a week, my skin felt amazing and had a visible glow to it!

Favorite body product?
Besides the Jergens lotion I use daily, I am a tried and true fan of The Body Shop’s Body Butter.  Especially the Avocado and Coconut formulas.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
I’ve been so fortunate to work with some of the beauty industry’s top talent over the past decade.  The one tip I’ve taken away from every single one of them is that sleep and hydration is KEY to keeping your skin looking healthy and young.  I just wish I’d paid more attention in my early 20s.

Beauty icon you admire?
Patti Hansen.  I think she embodies everything that is chic, beautiful, and eternally cool.

Bathing Beauty: Laura Tremaine is a Hollywood Housewife

By | bathing beauties | 6 Comments

Laura Tremaine is a Hollywood Housewife, but there is no Bravo-esque drama taking place at Chez Tremaine. She’s simply living a creative life with her filmmaker husband and their two little ones. Plus the occasional camera crew in the living room.

I met Laura several years ago, when I hosted a photography workshop taught by our friend, Jules Bianchi. A talented photographer herself, Laura writes daily at Hollywood Housewife on everything from motherhood to makeup to movies. Her Friday Links never cease to provide some fabulous article (or three) I’ve missed online or in print.

There are lifestyle blogs, and then there are blogs that deliver life and style all the while feeling like you’re chatting with an old friend. I think it’s a rare talent in this social media whirl.

After the evening at Blushington she threw last month, I asked her if she’d share some of her favorite things with Beauty Banter.

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?

1. Moisturizer (I change brands frequently, but my skin looks TERRIBLE without it, no matter the weather)

2. Loreal Voluminous mascara in blackest black, with a curved brush

3. A quality straightening iron (I’m currently using a T3 from Sephora)

4. Stila lip glaze in berry

5. Very new to the list – but an instant favorite: Clarisonic Mia

What is your all-time favorite product?

Probably the above-mentioned mascara, or possibly Essie nail polish.  There are so many colors I’m addicted to, but Ballet Slippers and Mademoiselle are both classics.

What product do you buy in bulk?

MAC facial wipes.  I know there are a lot of wipes on the market, but I’m addicted to these.  I love their texture and smell, I buy the huge packages.

Favorite hair product?

I don’t use a lot of hair products, but I will say that Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray has saved the day more than once.

You moisturize your face with…

I’ve tried everything from La Mer to straight Vitamin E oil (and both of those things I love).  Currently I’m using the Philosophy Miracle Worker and it feels perfect for right now.

Favorite body product?

When I remember, I like to splash on Neutrogena’s sesame oil just before I get out of the shower.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that less is more when it comes to makeup.  Too much product ages me.  But on the other hand – blush is the key to looking alive!  I can wear almost nothing else, but without blush I look like the sleep-deprived mother that I am.

Beauty icon you admire?

Of course I find inspiration in the icons from the past – Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy – but I also get invigorated by the unexpected – Tammy Faye Baker, for example.  As for someone who I admire currently, I’m all about Rachel McAdams.  I just love her confident red carpet style.  She has a little something to do with my pink hair and my new love for high waisted pants.

Photos by Greer Inez (top) and Laura Tremaine

Alex Asher Sears is a writer, photographer, and fourth generation Angeleno. She believes that you can find inspiration anywhere but thinks Slim Aarons, Nöel Coward and Diana Vreeland are a great place to start. Since 2007, she’s been sharing her eco-beauty finds with BB readers. She writes at AlexandraWrote, and also, quite literally, at Type A Calligraphy. Find her on twitter at @AlexandraWrote.

Bathing Beauties: Erica Chan and Lauren Kolodny of HonestlyWTF

By | bathing beauties | 11 Comments

If you haven’t bookmarked Honestly…WTF, do it now. Seriously. It may just be the best advice you take away all week. For those not yet in the know, the site, co-founded and written by the lovely Erica Chan and the equally lovely Lauren Kolodny, is seriously entertaining. The site explodes with personality, visually stimulating images, and a diverse range of need-to-know artist and art work, of-the-moment trends, and, my personal favorite, crafty DIY projects.

Like the site, started in May of 2010, good friends Erica and Lauren are full of great finds and random factoids. Note: Lauren is the one who introduced me to Joe Fresh, the Canadian import clothing store that had opened… a block away from me… in New York City… (and she lives in California).

While their site doesn’t offer much in way of their personal beauty philosophies or routines, Erica tells me that her personal style and beauty regimen are quite similar in that they are both “simple and unfussy, but never without a signature feature or detail.”  She continues, “I am pretty much a minimalist but I never leave the house without bright blue mascara or blush on.” Erica will be happy to know that a burst of color is, in fact, a spring trend, so keep on with the bold blue.

Read on to discover Erica and Lauren’s must-have products, ideas on aging gracefully and DIY trick to shiny hair.

P.S. Check out Honestly… WTF today for Beauty Banter’s post on our very own DIY lip scrub (soft, kissable lips just in time for V-day).

Erica Chan

What are you top 5, can’t live without products?
1. Yves Saint Laurent Faux Cils Mascara in Extreme Blue – I’ve been wearing blue mascara for 10 years and I love that YSL’s Faux Cils makes my eyelashes seem longer than they are. Plus, I’m oddly attached to the scent.
2. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer – I’ve never been comfortable wearing foundation so tinted moisturizer is sheer enough and the perfect amount of coverage for me.
3. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate – One or twice a week, I give myself an intense exfoliating treatment. ExfoliKate makes my skin feel new again without having to get a facial regularly.
4. Bond No.9 Noho Nuits – My signature scent of which I have mini vials tucked away in every one of my handbags — just in case!
5. Essie Nail Polish – I’m never without painted nails – I probably change my color at least twice a week.

What is your all-time favorite product?
I’ve been using Rosebud Salve for as long as I can remember. Not only is it always on my lips, it’s my cure-all for just about anything – especially in the winter for dry hands, cuticles, elbows, etc.

What product do you buy in bulk?
Biolage by Matrix Hydratherapie Conditioning Balm in the 32oz sizes. For someone who teases her hair but doesn’t ever brush it out, Biolage’s conditioning balm is the best for detangling all of my knots and snarls.

Favorite hair product?
Moroccan Oil Curl Control Creme is my go-to for holding body and keeping the texture in my hair. I either put it in my hair wet and let it air dry, or I use it as a styling creme.

You moisturize your face with…
Ole Henriksen Skin Insulator with SPF in the morning and Mary Kay’s Intense Moisturizing Creme in the evening.

Favorite body product?
I use Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion every day. I especially like that it’s unscented.

Favorite beauty secret you picked up along the way?
A trick that I recently learned for opening up the eyes is to line the inner top lid. It really does make the eyes look wider!

Beauty icon you admire?
Growing up, Love Story was one of my favorite movies and I thought Ali MacGraw was the epitome of natural beauty. And even in her 70s, she has aged so naturally and beautifully. I look forward to aging with grace!

Lauren Kolodny

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1. Clarisonic Mia – Erica recently introduced me to this magic wand, and I can honestly say that I feel like I’ve had a facial every time I finish washing my face. It’s worth the money.
2. L’Annine hand cream in Avocado – I hate dry, cracked hands. I used to work with my hands a lot outside in the cold on set, so this hand cream became my life saver. I have turned so many girls onto it. I am obsessed and have several tubes at a time.
3. Dolce and Gababna Light Blue perfume – I have been wearing this for years, I can’t imagine smelling like anything else. It makes me happy, therefore I can not live with out it.
4. Some sort of chapstick or lip gloss – I usually have at least 3 different kinds in my purse. I used to be obsessed with SoftLips in Vanilla, but recently I have discovered Maybelline Baby Lips – LOVE.
5. Mascara – I don’t wear much make up but If I do put anything on its mascara, CoverGirl Lashblast.

What is your all-time favorite product?
Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser – I feel like it really is the best product on the market.

What product do you buy in bulk?
Sunsilk Shampoo and Conditioner. They no longer sell it at drug stores so when I do find it at places like Big Lots and the 99cent store, I buy it all up.

Favorite hair product?
Moroccan Hair Oil Hydrating Styling Cream. I am in love with the smell of this, and it also feels so nice and silky on my hair.

You moisturize your face with…
I am always switching it up but right now I am using bareMinerals Purely Nourishing Moisturizer.

Favorite body product?
Sabon Body Scrub in Vanilla Coconut. It’s smells like vacation and leaves your skin feeling so moisturized. It softens and smoothes your skin like no other.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
I always finish off a shower with a cold rinse of my hair. I was told that the cold water closes the follicles and the pores in your hair and scalp, so basically it protects your hair from air pollution, and gives a nice shine. That shit works, try it!

Beauty icon you admire?
I love Kate Hudson. She is never too made up, and she has that beachy California girl look on lock down. Not to mention that her smile is infectious, and nothing is more beautiful than a great smile.

Bathing Beauties: Kidada Jones & Kazu Namise of Phylia de M.

By | bathing beauties | 2 Comments

Growing up in LA, Kidada Jones and her sister, Rashida (Parks and Recreations actress) were the girls that every other girl wanted to be friends with (every town has that girl). They were – and still are – so exquisitely beautiful, talented, interesting, smart and fun to be around. I was thrilled upon hearing of Kidada’s latest endeavor, co-founder of the hair care line, Phylia de M. Besides having created a truly incredible 3-product hair system (thus, no need for fake enthusiasm next time I see her), we’re now both entrepreneurs of beauty. And I love anyone who will sit down and talk beauty with me for hours on end.

I am so happy for Kidada and her partner, the equally beautiful and talented Kazu Namise’s, newfound success with Phylia de M. The heritage of this line  is fascinating, stemming back to an all-natural proprietary blend created by Kazu’s godfather (read more about the line and my product of choice, Connect, here) that restores hair’s health.

While their personal beauty routines are quite carefree, take note of the interesting tips that both women offer in regards to health and natural living. If you believe that beauty comes from within, than Kidada and Kazu are two poster women for the cause.

Bathing Beauty: Bryn Kenny of Dior

By | bathing beauties | 3 Comments

For a beauty enthusiast, a career in the beauty industry is a dream come true. Free beauty products, access to A-list makeup artists and the first to play with new beauty discoveries, is all part of the job. As the current  public relations director for Dior Beauty (swoon!), Bryn Kenny is living the dream. Prior to the highly coveted Dior gig, Bryn was a beauty writer for W Magazine (another swoon-worthy job). Besides being an infinite trove of beauty wisdom (she offers up some sage beauty tips in her interview below), Bryn is also a stylish girl-about-town (you’ll frequently find her photos on such sites as New York Social Diary and Guest of a Guest). With her beach-chic good looks and her comprehensive beauty knowledge, Bryn embodies the best of both worlds: beauty and brains.

Here, Bryn divulges on the secret to “eyes that pop,” an alternate use for perfume, and the trick to applying moisturizer post makeup:

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1. Bright lipstick. There’s something very bold—and yet classic—about a colorful lip. Makes me feel French.
2. Dior Addict Lip Glow – Pretty much the opposite of bright lipstick; It’s a natural balm with a bit of color that adjusts to your skin’s chemistry. It creates this perfect flushed pink—like you’ve just been kissed.
3. Hand Wash by Molton Brown – Does that count as a beauty product? It’s like fragrance for your hands, so I’m going to say yes.
4. Dior Capture Totale Resurfacing Peel – Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! I use this product probably more often than I should.
5. Essie nail polish in Fifth Avenue – It’s the perfect happy red and perks up my somewhat dour black and grey wardrobe.

What is your all-time favorite product?
That’s impossible to answer (ha!) but if I must, Diorissimo Eau de Parfum. I love the fact that it’s been around forever and is absolutely timeless. It’s this very simple, fresh blend of Lily of the Valley. I even spray it on my sheets.

What product do you buy in bulk?
This is an easy one: Carmex. They say it’s addictive and I’m okay with that. Every time I’m in Duane Reade I buy one because I’m always losing it. I find little pots of Carmex in my couch cushions like loose change.

Favorite hair product?
Sigh, hairspray. I’ll pretty much use any kind, drugstore, salon, whatever, but I love L’Oreal Ellnet. I have baby fine hair and hairspray adds a bit of body and texture. Also, Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo, the powder kind. It’s a godsend when I’m going from day to night, which is often.

You moisturize your face with…
I’m more of a beauty skeptic than a beauty junkie, but I’ve always been fascinated by skincare. Either way, it takes a lot to convince me to use a product at all, let alone religiously, and I’m addicted to Dior Capture Totale One Essential. It’s a serum that boosts the efficacy of basically any skin product you use. Alicia Keys’ makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff taught me an amazing trick with One Essential: after you’re finished with your makeup, rub a little on your palms and pat your face—it creates this really natural, healthy glow. I also use Dior L’Or de Vie La Crème and L’Extrait day and night. I have dry skin and it works miracles.

Favorite body product?
Pretty much anything Fresh makes. My new favorite is the Seaberry Body Cream—it just smells really good and is super moisturizing without being greasy. Plus, Fresh products are so pretty to look at. They have such a nice aesthetic.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
Lining the upper inner lid with black liner… I think a Shu Uemura artist taught me this back when I was a beauty writer at W Magazine. It makes your eyes pop but no one is quite sure why.

Beauty icon you admire?
Ooh, there are a few. I grew up emulating strong-willed women like Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry and Kate Moss. Love a rebellious blonde. I guess I’ve always been drawn to beauty that’s a bit dark, rough-around-the-edges and complicated.Smudged liner, a crooked nose, a little rock ‘n’ roll.

Bathing Beauty: Babi Ahluwalia of Sachin + Babi

By | bathing beauties | One Comment

Babi Ahluwalia is one-half of the design duo that makes up Sachin + Babi. The other half just so happens to be her designer hubby, Sachin Ahluwalia (hence the name of the ready-to-wear contemporary line). With decorative dresses, texturized blouses and beautifully tailored jackets, Sachin + Babi is all about the chicness, all of the time. Celebrities like Emma Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, Drew Barrymore and Kat Sadler are just a few of Hollywood’s fashionistas sporting the designs.

Babi is both beautiful and practical when it comes to her style. Her fashion sense is sophisticated yet comfortable, while her beauty routine is simple and unpretentious. Babi’s chestnut billowing mane, perfect skin tone and soulful eyes round out her unique beauty.

Here, the tools and products that Babi covets:

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1 – Tata Harper Rebuilding Moisturizer – I just love it.  Tara Harper uses all natural ingredients creating a pure and simple product.  The shelf life is short because she does not use preservatives but it is well worth it.
2 – Kiehl’s Lip Balm – A tube of Kiehl’s in your handbag is priceless, especially in winter. The product is simple but the quality and ingredients are so good.
3 – Forest Essentials Moisture Replenishing Bath & Shower Oil Madurai Jasmine & Mogra – You can only purchase this product in India; I love it for its purity and beautiful scent.
4 – Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler – It’s simply the best.
5 – Chanel Lipglossimer  in Wild Rose – It’s such a great pick me up and a very nice indulgence.

What is your all-time favorite product?
Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum . Her commitment to all-natural products is inspiring and she creates a great, clean and pure product.

What product do you buy in bulk?
Forest Essential’s Age Defying Facial Serum and Bath and Shower Oils. I have to buy them in bulk as they are only available in India.

Favorite hair product?
MoroccanOil Hydrating Styling Cream – With all of the blow outs and frequent color, it really rescues my hair!

You moisturize your face with…
Tata Harper Replenishing Nutrient Complex, Serum, and finally her Moisturizer.

Favorite body product?
Right now am loving The Body Shop’s glycerine soap (in bar or liquid form) in their great crisp citrus scent.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
Always slather on a face pack the night before an important day. I like any good replenishing moisture mask from Shahnaz Husain or Kiehl’s Algae Mask depending on what’s in the bathroom cabinet!

Beauty icon you admire?
Maharani Gayatria Devi of Jaipur. She had such regal elegance and a magnetic personality.

Bathing Beauty: Sarah Kugelman, Founder of skyn Iceland

By | bathing beauties | One Comment

Sarah Kugelman, founder of skyn Iceland, has been in the business of beauty for over two decades. She started one of the original beauty sites, gloss.com and sold it to Estee Lauder – quite the accomplishment! Additionally, Sarah has worked tirelessly for 20 years to create and perfect her promising skin care line. The result is a product collection with pure ingredients from Iceland that prides itself on removing the stress from your skin (amen to that!).

Here, Sarah (such a nice name!) dishes on skyn Iceland’s newest product launch and the secret to looking fabulous (it has something to do with a bed and a man…):

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without products?
1 – Josie Maran Argan Natural Volume Lip Gloss: I’m allergic to nearly all lip products (they make my lips dry/flakey) but these natural lip glosses don’t, so I can be healthy and glamorous!

2 – Pureology Essential Repair, Restorative Hair Mask: Last year, I was getting a blow-out and the stylist completely fried my hair. The only thing that restored it was this Pureology deep conditioner. It saved my hair!

3 – YSL black mascara: It’s just the best and I love the packaging.

4 – skyn ICELAND Pure Cloud Cream: I have dry skin and nothing hydrates and calms it like this cream. I developed it so it would be deeply moisturizing without being heavy or greasy. There’s nothing else like it and I’ve had big companies try to knock it off and no one can figure out our secret!!

5 – A new anti-aging serum I’m developing for launch in 2012: It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever used. It has transformed my skin into flawless, glowing, even-toned skin. Stay tuned!!!

What is your all-time favorite product?
Georgette Klinger’s drying lotion. I’ve been using it since I was 19yrs old. It’s the double zap for a bad blemish. It’s what goes on top of my normal anti-blemish routine at night. It’s bright pink so you can’t wear it during the day but it really feels like it goes to work instantly and I love the way it smells (think camphor and witch hazel). I’m so upset because they don’t make it anymore. I’ve had one jar for about 2 yrs and I keep adding water to the dry bits at the bottom and shaking it up. I’ll have to recreate it somehow, someday! [Editor’s Note: Try Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion as an alternative.]

What product do you buy in bulk?
Aveeno Body Lotion. I have the driest skin ever and have to moisturize at least 2 times a day. Also L’Occitane bath and shower gels (in Pine/Rosemary/Vetiver and Verbena). I discovered these on vacation in St Maarten years ago and have been hooked ever since.

Favorite hair product?
Pureology and John Masters conditioner. It detangles and conditions hair without leaving a residue or being too heavy. AND it’s natural! Also, love Frederic Fekkai shampoos. OK, I can’t pick just one!

You moisturize your face with…
With skyn ICELAND’s Pure Cloud Cream in the winter and Antidote Daily Lotion in the summer. skyn ICELAND’s Oxygen Infusion Night Cream at night!

Favorite body product?
That’s a hard one, I’m always on the search for a perfect body lotion and I can’t say I’ve really found one although I love Elemental Herbology body creams. They have a really nice product – natural, performance driven and nice scents. I also really like Peter Thomas Roth’s Blemish Buffing Beads Body. It’s a body wash that keeps my skin so smooth and the beads are moisturizing so it doesn’t dry.

Favorite beauty secret you’ve picked up along the way?
When I was a teenager, my mother took me to a dinner party and a French woman told me that the best beauty secret is to have a good man in your bed! Since then, I’ve also learned that a lot of sleep, drinking a lot of water, staying out of the sun, exercising and a great, natural moisturizer is the BEST beauty regimen. My grandmother who lived to 105, never left the house without ‘a little lipstick on’ — that goes without saying!

Beauty icon you admire?
I don’t know if she’s really a beauty icon, but I am inspired by Sienna Miller. She is stunningly beautiful (naturally!), has an incredible smile, beautiful skin and a great sense of personal style. She is modern, sexy, funny, and stylish. There is something timeless about her.
