Banter Babe: Christa Allen

Actress Christa Allen knows a thing or two about beauty. The self-professed beauty enthusiast shares her favorite products, daily routine, and best beauty secrets:

What’s your beauty vibe?
Classic. I like makeup that looks healthy and effortless, and when I wear a little more it’s almost always a red lip or a cat eye.

What’s the first beauty product you owned and loved? How old were you and why did you love it?
I stole my mother’s one tube of red lipstick when I was 6. I’d put it on while she was at work and do my best to hide all the evidence before she got home. She knew for sure.

What’s your favorite beauty treatment splurge?
I LOVE a set of eyelash extensions! Sometimes I’ll treat myself to them just for fun, and I always get a set before vacation. It makes getting ready in the morning so easy, you wake up feeling really beautiful.

What’s your daily makeup routine — and how long does it take?
I try new products all the time, but here are my go-to products: I apply a dab of MAC Face and Body Foundation in N3 to my Hourglass No. 7 brush and buff it all over my face. Then I use Clé De Peau Beauté concealer in Beige just under eyes or on any spots. I brush Benefit Gimme Brow gel in number 3 on my brows—this is my Desert-Island-Can’t-Live-Without-It product. It’s fantastic. It’s like mascara for your brows. I also use Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and By Terry Baume De Rose lip balm in Bloom Berry. This stuff is genius—so moisturizing and just a hint of color. I love it! When I go out at night I use Charlotte Tilbury’s Filmstar Bronze and Glow. It makes you look so healthy.

What’s your daily skincare routine?
I take off my makeup starting with a Simple Micellar wipe. I love these because you can get a little exfoliation by scrubbing with them, or just use them gently. The micellar water in it gives your skin just a bit of hydration. Then I wash again with MV Organic’s Gentle Cream Cleanser, and follow up with MV Organic’s Rose Soothing Moisturizer. This is my every night routine. Other things that come into play when I feel like doing a bit more are: Shani Darden Retinol Reform (about 2x a week), Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel when I feel like my skin is looking dull or in need of extra exfoliation, and Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay mask (made with Apple Cider Vinegar–NOT water!) when I feel that I’m in need of a mask. I’m also a big fan of Eve Lom’s Rescue Mask. And last but not least in the mask department, I ordered a bunch of 24k gold sheets on Etsy. They’re not crazy expensive, and you can apply them as a mask after you’ve done your full skincare routine (including lots of moisturizer so the gold will stick to your face). It is rumored that Cleopatra did this every night and if it worked for her…But seriously, I do think it makes your skin glow.

Age gracefully or filler and botox, please and thanks?
If filler or botox are used, they should be used PREVENTATIVELY, not to try to reverse the signs of aging. Nobody should know you’ve done anything. Subtlety is key!

What are your top 5, can’t-live-without beauty products?
1. Benefit Gimme Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel ($24). Makes your brows look full and luscious without penciling them in. It just looks like you have naturally great brows.
2. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay ($10-$13). Its like $12 and feels like pushing the ‘restart’ button on my skin. Absolute must!
3. By Terry Baume De Rose Nutri-Couleur ($56) in Bloomberry.
4. MV Organic Skincare Rose Soothing & Protective Moisturizer ($115).
5. Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($32).

What product do you buy in bulk?
Magnesium soaking salts for the tub. I take a lot of baths.

What’s your save-the-day hair product and why?
Oribe Dry Texturing Spray. If you are a girl with straight fine hair, you NEED this product. Trust! It gives volume in all the right ways.

Who is responsible for your hair – cut and color?
Laura Rugetti at The Beauty Can. I go all the way to Woodland Hills because she is a goddess and a hair magician, and her salon is a cozy respite from the pretense of Beverly Hills.

Best piece of beauty advice you’ve received?
“CHRISTA!! You HAVE to moisturize. Every night! Your skin will age. I am black. Black don’t crack. But you are a white girl. Moisturize!!” -Ashley Madekwe

Who is your beauty icon, and why?
Grace Kelly. She defines classic, elegant, simple, timeless.

What’s your least favorite beauty trend/look?
Heavy contouring. That is not your real face. You look like you’re wearing a mask.

If you could only do one beauty treatment on the weekly, what would it be and why?
Manicure and pedicure. I feel like my whole life is more put together when my nails are done!

What’s your best kept beauty secret?
Eating healthy helps my skin like no product ever could. Diet should be one’s first priority. And I drink SO much water!
